Default Training Books & DVDs, your suggestions?

I've been looking over various literature for training a new pup (pup-adult/advanced), both books and DVD's. Unfortunatley, the library doesn't have an extensive selection on the topic(and I live a long ways from the library), and DVD's range from $40+, so a collection of those is probably out as well. Looking for basic stuff, obedience, 8-22 wk, upland, waterfowl, advanced. THis pup is NOT going be be a sole upland, sole waterfowl, etc. type dog, but a mix, so I'm trying to stay away from info directed in only narrow focused areas.

My question is, what has been your most impressive piece of training material? Who made it, was it worth the money, would you use again, and so on.

I really don't have the $ to buy a bunch of materials, only to find them so-so mediocre things. Would rather hear from those who have used them. OR, if you have an old copy laying around that you would be willing to lend/rent for a short time so I can review before buying, that would be even better!

Thanks much!
Eric

I asked the same question not to long ago and alot of people said that Robert Wolters has some really good books. They also have them on DVD's. They were written some time ago but the training principles remain good. There are books in the series from training your "family dog" to "gun dog". I'm in the process of reading "game dog" which goes from picking out your dog to a more advanced training for waterfowl and upland. Seems very simple for even the beginning trainer. I borrowed my book but they do have them online for as little as $11.00 delivered to your door.

Tri-tronics Retriever Training Book. User friendly and broken down so it's easy to read and use. Very detailed and elaborate. I've read several books and I think this is one of the best.

I second the opinion of Elkchaser...Tri Tronics retreiver training. Wolters books are good but the Tri Tronics books are better with more explanation, pics and diagrams.
Interestingly enough I have recently joined a training group led by a pro trainer and everything they have been showing me can be found in that book.
Once you get started I would join a local hunt club like ORTC (Oregon Retreiver Training Club) and go to some of their picinic trials to watch/learn and meet up with other folks like yourself who want to train. You can sometimes find a training group that is led by a pro and train with them in exchange for helping them train there dogs. It is a great way to learn.
Good luck and stay with it, the rewards of hunting with a well trained retriever are worth the time and energy. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions.

There is a bunch of free, really good information on the Ducks Unlimited website. I bought a couple of books that I thought were top notch until I found a lot of the same info at DU and other various websites.
