Default slug yellows on the american angler

American Shaker T Angler our Trip,
Well here is my report from the 5 day trip I took on the American angler. Left NWA Tues morning and arrived in San Diego that after noon. Met Steve, Kurt and Russ and stowed our gear at the motel across the street from Point Loma Sportfishing. Went across the street to meet Lori in the office and take care of the last minute details. She told us Sam was running the trip and that he wanted us at the dock early so we could get a jump start on the traveling to Cedro’s island. Waiting at the office was a 10’ jig stick that Jim Hall had brought up for me to use, thanks Jim. Ken bushman called and invited us to the rod building class at orcas and we were glad to go. Don had some great food and cold beer for us. Thanks Don. Got to meet some great guy’s, fishslayer, produceman, orca and bushman. After the class we had to meet Sam from Baja Fish Gear at the dock to pick up a long rod for Steve, glad to meet you also Sam. We got up early the next morning and drug all our gear across the street to the dock. It’s amazing how much gear you think you need. We watched the boat arrive and they unloaded some nice fish to get our blood pumping. The other guy’s started to show up it looked like a great bunch of anglers to spend 5 day’s with. Loading went great and we were soon on our way ahead of schedule. We soon had the first of many great “Snacks” as Greg would call them.

We soon were in the zone and Sam and the crew were on the hunt for signs of big yellow’s and the hunt didn’t take long. Soon they were hitting deck fast and furious. It didn’t take long for us to put something like 50 really nice yellows in the hold for our afternoon efforts. After another excellent meal from Nate and Greg we gathered around our charter master Barry G. for our evening meeting.

After our evening meeting Sam went to a nice spot to anchor for the night. Soon after dark the Mac’s gathered around the boat and I just had to catch some for fun. Put the sabiki rig on and it was on. Kurt put one on his dropper loop rig and hooked it to the trolling straps. A few minute later bendo, he’s on to a pig yellow. I jig another bait and his dad take’s it from me and pins it on and down it goes. Bam, bendo again. Within a few minute’s 2 pig 50# class yellow’s hit the deck. I jig more bait and take off for my DL rig and fellow angler matt hooks a monster. I finally bait up and drop down after one of the beasts’s and by then the bite is over and the deck is covered with anglers set on hanging one of these slug’s also. 10 major tangles later and soon every one but Jack Purtell and I are gone. We decide that we will not leave the deck till we get us some of those pigs. Jack went and made a pitcher of red bull and vodka and sat and fished all night by ourselves on the back of the boat. We were cold, wet and tired but just kept saying sooner or later it would pay off. Well after three crew watches and putting up with the squid it happened and happened fast. Within 30 minutes or so jack and I proceeded to do the amazing. We had the whole boat plus jonnie to ourselves and put close to 200 # of trophy class yellowtail on the deck with only 4 fish. Boom, boom boom. One after the other. SLUGS! After we put 4 on the boat and I farmed another it was over just as fast as it started. A few minutes later Sam hit the deck and could not believe what he saw. He pulled up a chair and he and berry just watched as jack and I tried to get bite again but it was over. At 4 am I decided to try to get a little sleep. Jacked up on red bull and vodka and the thrill of what just took place I could not sleep. A few hours later we were back on the hunt at first light. We had some full speed, on the beach, wide open huge yellows going all morning. Early in the afternoon we moved off the point with the “gun” and “star” for some great mid grade (20-30) tail action. Seeing that I already had 200# of fish already in the hold I opted to hand off the first couple of fish to some guy’s that were having a hard time getting bit and just enjoy the day. I only landed 1 fish the second day. It seems I handed of my mojo with the fish because those fellows proceeded to hook and land several more on their own. That evening Sam told us the offshore thing was going again and that we would be taking off that night. We spent the evening on the super secret dropper loop spot for a few more slugs and a giant was lost to the anchor. We busted a move up the line and the next afternoon we had a few hits on albies and a few yellowfin. That night moving up the line we were hit with some nasty weather. The next morning we joined the fleet for some scratchy albie fishing and lots of boat riding. Later that afternoon Sam finally couldn’t take it anymore and called it a trip. Let me tell you all something. I’m not the most experienced long range fisherman but I know a good thing when I see it. The American Angler and the whole crew is the REAL DEAL! Sam, Ray, Jonny, Jordan, Cameron , Greg and Nate are by far the best crew I’ve ever had the pleasure to fish with. Lori in the office is awesome and the girls from 5 star are also first class. Barry G. and his crew roll first class and I just had the time of my life. I am thankful for the new friendships that were formed and have not one negative thing to say about the trip. I got to share the rail with some other bd’rs and I will let them post their own reports. Thanks to my wife for teaching summer school so I could go on this trip and my friends for listening to me talk about it for the last few months. Thanks, okie man.
