Winter Ocean crabbing in a 17.5 foot trihull? You are crazyfish aren't you? Wish you luck, pick a good day!

PS- Why? Crabbing gets really good in the bays in the winter (as long as there's not too much run off).

The ocean crab is so much better and bigger.

My 17.5 has been 35 miles off shore, I think that near shore will be fine. I usaully don't go out unless the swells are under 10'.

Bottom fishing should also be good, winter months are the best for linkcod.

Good Luck.....once I left the pots out overnight and it took a week to go get them again. I put them a half mile south of the south jetty here in Newport and found some of them a mile north.

It was sure nice today though.

Crazyfish,
Based on what you are saying your moniker is very fitting.
Please do a favor for all of us conservative cowards on this board. If you cross what I assume to be the Tillamook Bay bar under the conditions that you describe, please don't take any children or uninformed adults with you. If you cross on a strong minus ebb tide you won't have to be concerned with making it 35 miles, you will probably have your hands full trying to make it 350 yards.

Although winter ocean conditions are generally less calm than summer, there are otherwise some beautiful days out there.

You don't have to leave crab pots out overnight to catch crabs. If you pick your day and tend your pots, ocean crabbing can be a non-life threatening experience.

However, the competition from the commercial crabbers would tend to make me stay home.
