Capn' Dan - Cabo is the only place I've fished Marlin. Nov-Feb is the normal time for the Bill's. If you decide to put Cabo on your elimination list I can give you some better info. Let me know.

If you are just getting your feet wet and want to catch a Marlin, Cabo is the best value and is very consistent (400/day for 32 foot boats). Try December through April for best striped Marlin in the 140lb range range. For Blues and blacks, the fishing is from late July to October.

In Cabo:

Pisces Fleet for boats. Marina Sol for a reasonably priced pleasant Condo close to the action. La Palapas for the best seafood dinner.

Hmmm... if Dec - April is the best time for striped marlin in Cabo.... where do they go after April?

Cap'n Dan - join us! We're going after marlin next summer - RIGHT HERE IN OREGON!

Keta.....don't be sleeping in your truck anymore. I have lots of room, whether I am here or not. But I still eat tuna from the can.

CD,

If you're lookin' to go in the next five months I will be skippering a boat down in Costa Rica for Roy's Zancudo Lodge. The lodge is about 30 miles from the Panamanian border on the pacific side and the fishing tends to be geared more towards sailfish, dorado and YELLOWFIN TUNA, than for marlin during our winter and spring. Pretty good marlin action for mid-sized (200-600#) blues and blacks in the summer but it is hot as the blazes then. The fishing is not as cheap as it tends to be in Cabo but the scenery and wildlife absolutely compensate for it in my opinion, and the #'s of sails you can catch in a day is pretty impressive. Not to mention the YELLOWFIN TUNA. Give me a buzz (e-mail) if you want some info.

We just got back from a week in Cabo on Saturday. Fishing was strange for November. Lots of 25# Dorado (9 in 45 minutes: 5 on at once on Wednesday) a 140# Stripe on the bank off the lighthouse in the hour we fished there, but no yellowfin tuna this year. Best weather and water we've ever had, but the full moon put the fish off the bite during the day. We've fished with the same pangero for the last nine years and the price hasn't changed except for bait. it was 1$ apiece rather than $2 at the begining. It has always been very safe place to be, but what we really noticed this year was the upscalling of the whole area. The road from the airport to Cabo is new and beautiful, new landscaping everywhere, a major attempt at a reduction in trash, the beautiful new mall on the marina is open, almost all the new docks are in in the marina: it's an incredible change in a little over a year since Julietta almost distroyed the place. I'm sure the APEC conference put pressure on Fonature to invest in the infrastructure of Cabo and they have in a really big way. It's becoming a more beautiful place and has always been a great place to just 'hang'. Cabo is not the cheapest place to fish in Mexico, but it's not really outrageous either. We stayed in a condo at Marina Fiesta, fished six days, rented a car for the week, ate very nice meals, with air for less than $1750pp. You could do the same in San Jose del Cabo and fish Gordo Banks for the week for less than $1400pp. Zihua would be cheaper still, but it's all in what your looking for in the experience. Actually, if you're looking for billfish, I would actually go to Zihuatanejo as multiple billfish days are the norm during the winter. It's a beautiful, cheap Mexican fishing town as well. We go down to mexico to fish a lot and have lots of info and contacts. If you're interested just e-mail. Tight Lines

The fishing is the cheap part....I have gone to Cabo 3 times in the last 2 years and I am getting really disapointed with the amount of bang for your buck.
44 dollars for 4 Bob 19cent hamburgers is ridic.

The last trip we ate good and did all we wanted to do, but we spent 4200 dollars for 4 of us....and that isn't including room or airfare.
The first time they cooked up our fish for dinner it was 5 dollars each, then it was 9, and this time it was 110 for 4.

I am not trying to discourage anyone, but just be prepared.

I think I am going to New Zealand next time.

I have a friend (he's legal) that was born and raised about 40 miles from Cabo. I also have two milage tickets from Alaska Airline. Maybe I'll go stay with Monico's mom and look for work down there (will I be a "Wet Back?) !

Wak- First trip to Cabo we had our catch (Dorado) cooked it was $3 apiece at the Giggling Marlin. They cooked it 5 different styles and supplied sides. That was a lot of years and about 30,000 Hotel rooms ago! You could also get a Lobster dinner for $10 just about anyplace. The only American joint was Baskin and Robbins. Now there's what - 3 or 4 fast food hamburger joints?
That same (first) trip - the wife spent 1/2 a day touring every shop in town while I was fishing. 5 years later she spent 3 days touring town and didn't get everywhere.
The fishing is still good, but your right about the cost. Call a place Paradise and kiss it goodbuy! :depressed:

Not sure what you guys are complaining about price wise. Cost no more/day than staying on the Oregon coast and fishing a boat is $400 bucks/day vs $700 up anywhere else. That $300 will buy a lot of hamburgers.

pkg40,
The Oregon Coast costs me gas over and back. I sleep in my truck and eat PBJs and tuna out of a jar.

Costa Rica is definitely worth the trip if you haven't been there yet. A couple of things to keep in mind.

1. You will burn 2 fishing days on travel too and from. Fly to San Jose day 1 . Small plane to coast the next morning.

2. A 32 foot bertram will cost around 800/day vs 400/day in Mexico

3. You will need to plan well in advance (like 6 months). There are not a lot of boats. Do your research on where fish will be at time you travel and get your boats booked.

My thinking is also that Costa Rico will have less pressure on the fish than the cabo crowds. The trip that I found is all inclusive from san jose to the lodge for five nights with four full days fishing for two people on the boat for $4400 not sure what it will cost if we bring a third. I just don't think that I will like the crowds in cabo or all the tourist hype around cabo. Costa Rica on the other hand I think will have less people and pressure.
Just my thinking.

Dan!

Costa Rica, Costa Rica, Costa Rica. I spent a month in the Golfito area of Coasta Rica and I will say that it is the best blue water fishing in eastern Pacific. Here is a link for the guide that I used and it is much cheaper than Cabo. Let me know if you would like to get some inside info about how to keep the costs down.
http://www.sportfishing.co.cr/

Oh, BTW.... John charges $450/day for the boat and he is one of the top guides in the area.

Cheers,
Dennis
