Fishing Cabo (A cautionary introductory tale)
In 2000 I had the opportunity to take 8 weeks off work. I planned to charter a fishing boat for 3 weeks of marlin fishing in Cabo. In the first three weeks, my buddy and I logged 30 striped marlin released and many more lost. We caught a mako, saw 100s of whales, lost count of the dorado and tuna, lived on margaritas, cerveza, and fish. I lost 20 lbs of sedentary work accumulated flab, got an amazing tan and met a lady, who I later dated and married.
Keta and MIZB,
You can stop harassing me for a fishing story now. If you want more details, then I require a beer and coordinates to a good halibut or lingcod hole off of CR mouth.

Re: Fishing Cabo (A cautionary introductory tale)
pkg - I hope my wife doesn't lurk and read this one- it'll be the end of my Cabo fishing daze!
OK - You're off the hook on the ifish story, but ya- I want to hear more. The beer is available at any Tunaholics meeting, the lingcod hole info is available any time you want to accompany us bottom fishing (or buy me a beer at a Tunaholics mtg.) You'll have to bug someone else for the but's info out of CR I'm looking myself!

Re: Fishing Cabo (A cautionary introductory tale)
pkg40,
Cross the bar and turn to the starboard and head NNW, when you have gone about 900 miles look for Dixon Entrance. Enter Dixon Entrance and travel east for about 40 miles. In front of you you will see a fairly large flat island (Duke Island) with one high peak on the SW side. Anywhere to the west of this island is extremely good halibut fishing. Chickens around the 15-20 fathom drop off and big butts at the 30-35 fathom drop.

Keta,
Cool, I can catch my limit in the morning and then swing by and pick up my crab pots out of Dutch Harbor and be home in time for dinner. Sure glad I have fast boat.

That was the closest place where I know you can catch halibut  It's a good spot too.

Re: Fishing Cabo (A cautionary introductory tale)
Master Assasin,
I expect that you would kick my patootie in anything less than 6 footers. After that my weight might give me the advantage. Not likely to find out though, since you fish wrong part of the coast;>

Re: Fishing Cabo (A cautionary introductory tale)
Deepslayer,
Naw, I take the boat out every November and spend some
time doing the reagularly scheduled maintainence to
her.
This past weekend I took her down to Curry Marine in
Newport to get the valves adjusted, the heads torqued
and the outdrives realigned. Then I'll take her back up
to Pacific City and re-do the bottom paint, replace the
Zincs and do general clean up. From there she goes back
up to the builder to get the area where I had the repair
work done in August re-painted.
With any amount of luck at all, I should have her back
in the water by the first of April ... and the start
of the Salmon season. Mostly I'm looking forward to the
early Cod season (starts May 1 for me). Then on to TUNA
in July-Sept.!!! And fall Chinook Sept. and Oct. and
then I start the whole process over again!

Keta,
Ling Cod ... delivered live ... 300 lbs./month. Not
much of a fishery, but I enjoy it!

Re: Fishing Cabo (A cautionary introductory tale)
Delivered live! That sounds like an interesting fishery. You must have great livewells on that boat. Is this shallow water? There must be a pretty good premium for the live fishery. How many fingers get lost handling those babies?

Re: Fishing Cabo (A cautionary introductory tale)
That's cute, Mel! Actually, I usually come in with
my hands pretty chewed up after fishing for cod, but
I still haven't lost any digits.
Ed, there is a pretty good premium on delivering live ...
about 70% more. Makes it worth the extra effort to
keep 'em live, 'specially with a 300#/month limit!
My fish holds will take about 250# of live cod as long
as I keep fresh sea water running into the tanks.

Re: Fishing Cabo (A cautionary introductory tale)
Heh! I have a hard enough time just trying to keep all
the scales on the tuna and getting them cold enough fast
enough to please the market. I couldn't imagine trying to
keep them live for any length of time ... however, I'm sure
you could get a market for 'em if you could just figure
out how to keep them alive (both before and after delivery).

Re: Fishing Cabo (A cautionary introductory tale)
Hey there Riverliver - First you're going to have to introduce yourself and tell us a story. Looks like you been around for 9 posts, and NO STORY?
It appears you live on a houseboat near Scappoose. Miss B Haven is down at Channel Moorage, you know where that's at? (Blue roof's) I don't recognize the name of you're moorrage, where are you?
You'll have to hold on for the winter/spring on that Tuna trip! Maybe come to some TA mtgs in between?

Re: Fishing Cabo (A cautionary introductory tale)
Id love to come to a TA meeting!!!
I live at Casselmans wharf it's about a mile down stream from Rocky point Marina. I moved to Scappoose three years ago this Febuary and Luv it. I live on a floating home and wouldn't move off the water for anything in the world! It's nice to be able to drop a line n the water and get a fresh hot cup of coffee with out leaving home  I'm 33 years old and live by myself with no children. I've been divorced for five years, and am in no hurry to get remarried.
I can't really think of a fishing story at this point I will have to IOU one Miss B. Except I love to fish almost as much as I love the water.
So there ya go
