Sliding Hook Rigs?
Anyone know of a tutorial on how to tie the multiple-hook sliding mooching rigs?
Thanks,
MB

Re: Sliding Hook Rigs?
MB,
Tye the first hook on with a bumper (egg knot), then slide the second hook a bit onto the leader (not too far, about 1"). Then take another piece of leader and tie a Uni knot or another bumper knot around your hook shank and leader. Pull leader through hook eye until it is where you want it.
I don't like slip ties and won't use them.
I hope you can understand my babbling.

Re: Sliding Hook Rigs?
MB - Do you already know how to tie a fixed hook rig?

Re: Sliding Hook Rigs?
Yes, I do know the first knot. I think I got the fixed one down but the sliding one is little enigmatic to me? We use them to rig up live bull head and mudsuckers for Striper fishing. The bait is different sizes so it is necessary to be able to adjust the hook distance. They used available at many places but lately they been removed from the shelves and I can only find them at a local bait shop for a premium price!
Thanks,
MB

Re: Sliding Hook Rigs?
MB,
I'd pre tie the bottom hook and then when I got my bait, tie a solid hook at the right distance for the bait.
I've never liked store bought leaders either.

Re: Sliding Hook Rigs?
MB - IF you use bait holders (herring clips) to get the spin or plug cut you don't need to worry about sliders. I also often pin a whole herring using fixed hooks and no clip and can still get the kink/spin on the bait. I pin the back hook, take a couple wraps around the fish and pin the top hook up through the jaw and out the top of the head. You can make up for the lenght of line by varying the wraps around. Bottom line is you don't need sliders to fish a spinning bait. Lots of folks here won't use them. Suburban myth or not, most "experts" will tell you not to use sliders because when a fish grabs the top hook you don't get a direct solid connection and set. The hook has to slide all the way down to the bottom before the connection is solid.
I normnally just dangle the bottom hook, or pin it barely under the skin for max barb exposure. As Keta said you can vary your lengths to fit different situations, but I find that to be unnecessary. I just change my rigging to fit the bait.
The big thing is to learn to get a good spin without needing the sliding rig.
I'd skip the egg loop in any case and use a full snell. It's of no use on mooching rigs and just means less wraps holding the leader. Certainly don't try it on the top hook/slider since you're using a whole different piece of leader for the wrap. Full snells are the way to go (JMO).

Re: Sliding Hook Rigs?
MB,if you were closer I could have you tying them rigs in about 5 minutes, really is simple .I cant draw worth a hoot or I would try a pictorial for you.I fished the live bait(sculpins) for stripers in the Umpqua and Smith river estuary's for many years and have tied hundreds of these sliding rigs.I know from experience when fishing live bait that varies in size that the sliding top hook is the way to go, the key to the top slider is making your knot tight enough so your bait will lay straight and be able to wiggle and do its thing without balling up.I will try to explain how i tie them ,first after you have tied your snell knot for you bottom hook slide your top hook down the leader within a inch or so of your bottom hook cut yourself 12'' or so of line, either squidding in 20lb or mono which works fine too I would stay away from tuff line for this knot because it just won't keep the necessary friction on the line now if your right handed pinch your top hook and leader with your left thumb and index finger and lay the 12'' wrapping line along side you leader and make a loop with about 2 '' of tag line hanging below your bottom hook pinch this again with the left thumb and finger, now make a peace sign with the right fingers and stick them in the loop you made and wrap the entire rig wrap 7 or eight times and wet and pull tag ends to desired tension and your done. yet

Re: Sliding Hook Rigs?
Miss B- I would definitely never use the slidder for salmon fishing. I have heard that those solid double hook rigs were a good replacement on the RSK?
Lepper- You may see me this winter and spring! I have a couple of training opportunities that may get me up there! I will probably drag along the DB.
RJ- Thanks for the outline, I will give it a try! Sounds resonable.
As you well know, the slidding hook is not a hinderance when fishing live bait for Striper since they inhale the whole bait in one gulp!
Thanks to all,
Thomas

Re: Sliding Hook Rigs?
hope it helps MB I should have mentioned that when you wrap with your two fingers you are rolling a twist around the top hook start around entire rig laying the wraps together as you go it may sound confusing and there is probably a better way to explain it .Hmmmmm maybe you should organize a striper fishing trip and well get you set up tying them rigs are you fishing the Sacramento for the stripers?RJ

Re: Sliding Hook Rigs?
Beautiful Bandon-by-the-Sea is about a quarter south of Coos Bay and is a wonderful place to visit. Tough bar and great cheese. At least two good restaurants with more untried. When I lived in Coos Bay, Bandon was a sleepy little nothing port...and then came the retirees and the tourists!
