Bottom dragger on the banana
Got to Newport late Saturday, ran to the banana for some evening hali, got to the north end just before dark and watched a bottom dragger running the banana. When we set up for our first drift he hailed us on the radio and asked us if we were lost. I hailed him back and asked what he was dragging for, and he drug up and disappeared in the fog and didn't reply. It was extremely sporty out there with a 6 1/2 hour ride back, but I just wondered what a hake boat was doing pulling over hali holes?
So if your favorite fishing holes don't have fish anymore, blame the after sunset non-regulations, I guess.
We never did pick a fish or even get a bite.
Don't want this to start a rant , but just thought people should know what we came across.
 Anyone else seen this before?

Re: Bottom dragger on the banana
It's usually a shrimper at that spot, not a hake / whiting boat.
It's real easy to tell. A shrimper has outriggers set at a very low angle - almost straight out.

Re: Bottom dragger on the banana
Not much hake out there as Mark said. Most likely a shrimper. FYI, the pink shrimp fishery off of OR was given a green as far sustainability according to the Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Guide. The industry has done an excellent in conjuncture with ODFW of reducing bycatch.
See a halibut escaping a shrimp net. 3/4" on the BRD pretty much excludes most halibut;

Re: Bottom dragger on the banana
Was out there Friday morning and saw a good half a dozen shrimp boats working the area, so I don't think the guy you saw was likely doing anything illegal.

Re: Bottom dragger on the banana
Hey Silver Eagle, when were you fishing on Sat? I came in and there was one boat left out thee, I went by and talked to them. Was that you? I have the Silverfish, an Edwing (aluminum, looks like a small commercial boat) with the pilot house (looks like a telephone booth!)

ps, The closed area is not actually a MR, it's a Yelloweye Rockfish Conservation Area (YRCA). But yes, it's defacto a MR except we can troll for salmon on it and it's legal to put crab pots there.

Re: Bottom dragger on the banana
They are shrimp trawlers. The outriggers will be reinforced and very bulky looking.

Re: Bottom dragger on the banana
The Shoreside Commerical Whiting/Hake season is delayed until July 5 at this point, so there are no hake boats fishing. Halibut are defined as 'prohibited' bycatch in the hake fishery, so hake fishermen don't have any incentive to catch them.

You can see the trawl doors hanging on the side at the stern, it's not fishing, just towing the net on top to clean it.
