Louisianna Wrecks, and that would be a gag grouper. I fished that spot plenty o' times.

Re: Nice Fish Pic from the Zipperlip
Gee this boards dead. :depressed: Ok - so this is actually from a fish buddy who got it from his brother in Florida. The email was titled "I HATE MY BROTHER! Ha - I thought that was pretty funny till I saw the pic. Now I hate his brother too! It's off the Atlantic side, that's all he knew about the spot. I thought it was a Gulf Grouper, I was hoping for some expert opinions (Pilar?).

Re: Nice Fish Pic from the Zipperlip
That's definitely a gag or a leopard grouper. Most likely gag. And it could be gulf or atlantic.

John - Can't tell ya any more about it. Check the post above, just got the pic sent to me. I liked it, pretty fish and water. Made me hunger for the little numbers. You know about the little numbers don't ya?

Re: Nice Fish Pic from the Zipperlip
Miss B, Yep definitely not a member of the snapper family. If I can find my Florida fish card, I'll second Kurt's opinion. It seems bottom fish everywhere are varied and its hard to know what you are looking at if you do not see a lot of them.
There are at least 80 or 90 types of rockfish. I suspect that snapper and grouper have at least that many.
Because of the pressure nearshore and lack of decent habitat in Florida you will not find many large groupers in shallow water. They tend towards the 3rd reef (100+ ft.) and deeper. Wrecks are good too in deeper water, producing grouper in the 50# and better class.
Snappers are found everywhere on any structure. The Gulf side tends to be quite shallow (6 to 15 ft) for miles from the beach, especially in Florida Bay, above the Keys. Deep water may be readily found 6 miles off the Atlantic side (South and East) of the Keys. So I'm guessing that is an Atlantic fish.
What are the colors on the back?

Re: Nice Fish Pic from the Zipperlip
The fish ID card says 'Tiger Grouper'. I've never seen one and can't tell you any more than that. The one to shoot when you dive is the Yellowtail snapper if you can find one big enough. Fine eating.
Stay away from the dark brown with python pattern lighter tan. That's a Nassau grouper and is protected.
