White River/Deschutes muddy
The mud is back in White River and the Deschutes. Check before leaving to fish below Sherars.

Re: White River/Deschutes muddy
I floated it last weekend and the color is way off. I expect the same this weekend. The river is high and the botom end is big. Most of the good holes are unfishable. Look out for rattlers, we got two.

Re: White River/Deschutes muddy
River is still muddy. Marginally fishable early in the morning. There have been a few steelhead caught at Sherars Falls already. The early hatchery fish should be in the river. Big, dark spinners might get you a hook up. The fish will be right on the bank, as will the trout also.

Re: White River/Deschutes muddy` 7/6
River has cleared a lot below White River. Volume is down and water actually is very fishable for both trout and steelhead. Salmon are still being taken at Sherars Falls also. PGE continues to mess with the water levels and that had the trout off the bite a little last week for awhile. Heard of the first steelhead caught above Mac's on Saturday.

Re: White River/Deschutes muddy
I am here, and after the next few D metal heads to be fooled.
Trout action is excellent from above Maupin to Macks on spinners,
I just hooked my two largest D Trout ever, great fighting action. Pressures is super low, only a few fishers around.

Steelhead counts at Bonneville are up from the last few years. Should be a good early season on the Deschutes:
First seven days in July:
2005 - 9389
2006 - 4937
2007 - 5426
2008 - 10042

Re: White River/Deschutes muddy
Andy, that's good info.
However, the Columbia is higher and colder than usual for this time of year. A lot of fish duck into the Deschutes to escape the warm Columbia water during a normal year. I'm wondering if conditions this season will mean fewer strays.
I normally make my first trip to the lower river in mid-July, and usually I find fish. Anyone heard reports from down low?
Mike
