LOP tag question
Hello Everyone,
I recently met a man that has 1800 acres in Long Creek (Northside Unit) where he says he gets 2 LOP tags for deer, and 2 for elk, and he wants to give them to my dad and I....my question is, are they like additional tags or do they take place of my OTC tags?
If so, I am just making sure; you can use the LOP tag during any open season in that unit, correct?
Thanks!

Re: LOP tag question
Here's what you need to know - Land Owner Preference Program
It looks to me like the landowner is eligible for 3 LOP tags but it might be too late for this year unless he's already applied for the tags.
Buck Deer (100 series), Bull and Either-sex elk (200 series): Tags may go to any person(s) of the landowner’s choosing, if the bag limit is for antlerless deer or antlerless elk. Landowner tags for hunting antlered deer or elk may be issued family members or to a non-family person of the registered landowner’s choosing only as follows:- If the landowner is eligible for two, three or four LOP tags, one may go to a non-family member
- If the landowner is eligible for five, six or seven LOP tags, two may go to non-family members
- If the landowner is eligible for eight, nine or ten LOP tags, three may go to non-family members

Re: LOP tag question
You could be right Baltz, I was just going off the information listed below. I would suggest calling ODFW to be sure one way or the other.

Attention Landowners (pdf)

- It is mandatory that all information on the tag distribution form be filled out complete or the forms will be returned.
- LIST all applicants, including the landowner if hunting, on the forms.
- MAIL the tag distribution forms in time to be received at ODFW by the controlled hunt application deadline, following the instructions in the Big Game Regulations booklet, and meet the prescribed deadlines.
- CHECK the current Big Game Regulations for all deadlines.
B. Purchase a controlled hunt application by the deadline.- LOP tags are not automatically issued.

Re: LOP tag question
Lor, I believe (gut feeling) that this is an oufitters ad. And out of the 2 outfitters I'm thinking of, both have large tracts of land.

Re: LOP tag question
That CL ad is from an outfitter out of Battleground, WA. He had a lease in the Grizzly unit, but gave it up when the Heppner land opened up to him.

Sort of amazing isn't that he is advertising the tags as being for sale but what he must have ment legaly is the access is for sale because you can't sell LOP tags

Re: LOP tag question
Baltz is right with the September 15th date, but you'll have to deal directly with Salem after the 15th of May.
Also, the owner needs to first register his property first (seperate form from Salem).
Just call the controlled hunt offic in Salem, they'll walk you through it.

Re: LOP tag question
They could have fixed that this year but no they choose to ignor it as well. It is a good thing they have so many large land owners on the board.

You'll have to communicate with your landowner friend and make sure he puts you down on the registration, along with the specific hunt# and your Hunter/Angler#. As long as this is done with enough time to spare you can buy your tags the day before the season. Assuming he hasn't already filled it out for this year.
Good Luck
