Question Honda four stoke motor oil suggestion?

I'm changing the oil in my Honda's. even though I changed it a the first of the year the oil smells a little like gas. It also seems to have gained volume. What type and brand of oil do you recommend? Last time I followed the Manuel and used 5-30.

If you are smelling fuel, you either:

Are doing a lot of low rpm trolling and never got a solid break in to set the rings.

or

Have a thermostat issue that is not allowing the motor come up to temp.

or

Have an injector issue that is leaking fuel into the cylinder when it shouldn't be.

I would correct the source of the fuel in the oil before getting overly concerned about the brand of oil...you are going to need to change it a couple more times while you resolve the thinning issue anyway.

Thumbs up Re: Honda four stoke motor oil suggestion?

tbones 65 is dead on the money. If the oil smells like gas, I would suspect improper ring set or two much fuel flowing to the engine. Low speed idling will give you some, but not as much as your post indicates.

I've been using Castrol 10-30 for the last few years and it has worked great. Oil change is very important on Honda kickers. I change it at 100 hrs and do the filter every 200 on my 8hp.

Is it to late to set the rings if that is the problem?

Is this regular automobile oil everyone is talking about or marine oil?

Napa synthetic for mine. You must be trolling alot to dilute the oil, ot one of the reasons tbone mentioned, but trolling alot will do it..
