Re: Re-Introduction (Transformation!)
Ah, another proud SeaSport owner. You going to keep in on a trailer or plant it in the water somewhere?
I think there's a rule that you have to post photo's of the boat here too.

Master Baiter,
Here is a what I do when I'm not draining the Klamath
I hope you fishermen from a "Southern State" can get your fishing back.

Re: Re-Introduction (Transformation!)
Welcome, Master, uh, okay MB -
I think your intro story should include an explanation of that very colorful handle!
I think other Salty Dogs here might agree that after you've been Tuna Fishing, everything else is just fishing.
(No, Pilar, that does NOT mean you don't have to take me sturgeon fishing!)

Re: Re-Introduction (Transformation!)
Thank You all kindly! I am down with Tuna if Tuna is down with ME. This Tuna business does seem alluring. I have a buddy at work that has become an addict recently.
The handle : It all began whence I was a wee lad...It began as a fun hobby but soon became an obsession...From then on when I was not on the water and the thoughts of bent rods occupy my mind...And at that very moment I just decides to stop fighting the urge and succumb to the pleasures of fishing!
Pitch Pocket,
As far as mooring goes, the vessel has all the proper coatings to be moored but this year I will not be able to afford it so I will be trailering for now. How do you post a picture? Do I need a storage space somewhere on the net first?
Keta, DOH! We are in a STATE of Crisis down here!
Thanks for the warm welcome!
MB the hard way!

Re: Re-Introduction (Transformation!)
MB - YOu can store pics on the ifish server and post as long as they are under 100k. If not you need your own space to link to OR use an editor and reduce the resolution/file size.
To post go to the top of the page here and click on "picture uploads" (small gold letters near the top- real stealthy like!)

Re: Re-Introduction (Transformation!)
Miss B,
Is the actual picture supposed to show up in the thread?
WP,
I went out this Sunday, we got one Striper on grass shrimp but the sturgies were being very picky and only interested in ghost shrimp. We had two boats pull in on either side of us and each boated a keeper sturg in like 5 minutes! The bait shops were out of ghost shrimp when we got there but usually the grass shrimp is just as effective but this time, what a bummer that was. The sturgeon bite was wide open this weekend due the fresh water influx.

Re: Re-Introduction (Transformation!)
Yep - if you get it uploaded then click on image when you are writing the post (you can edit and add the pic). You need to go to the upload page first and copy the location on the pic (it's a URL in blue). When you click on the "image" button in the editor you'll get a box to paste the URL/link into. Make sure you clear the "http" that's already there or you get an error (double http). Good Luck

Re: Re-Introduction (Transformation!)
MB, Ahh I know the place in the pic extremely well. Just past Pt. Diablo in the Golden Gate. Just beyond the beach east of the Pt. Diablo foghorn there is some rocks that held some nice Bolinas Rockcod and Lings. Then if you drifted on the west side of Pt. Diablo there is a great chicken halibut hole. If you drifted a little more west, you also got some sightseeing of the human kind on the beach. But being SF it could be a bit strange.

Re: Re-Introduction (Transformation!)
MB - I think you're gonna fit in here just fine... you'll make a great tuna addict. Awesome "explanation" of your "handle"... Ooops.
Okay, so we can definitely tell that photo was taken in CA... mmm... brown hills. See, I can dis' the place 'cuz that's where I'm from. I sure miss SWIMMING in the ocean... now I bide my time fishing on it!
Again, welcome! If you find yourself in the Portland area, give us a holler!
Oh, and in case anyone was worried, Pilar assures me we'll go for sturgeon sometime when it opens. Yawnnnn... er, I mean, Yippeee... (Hogmaster was giving me grief on the main board about there being 'other fish in the water' besides tuna)
I'm actually looking very forward to a keeper sturgeon!

Re-Introduction (Transformation!)
Hello, I may be familiar to a few of you from the Main Board. I am now the proud owner of an open water boat and hope to run with Salty Dogs on occasion!
I purchased a used 22' Seasport powered with a Volvo AD31P w/DP from a gentleman in Ballard, WA. My primary interests are Salmon, Sturgeon, Striper, Rockfish, and Halibut, so far. My geographic range is from Monterrey, Ca. to around the CA/OR with primary ports out of the Gate and Humboldt Bay.
I hope I can learn from the experience and wisdom of the "Alpha" dogs and hopefully share some insight in return
Thank You,
Sincerely,
Thomas (MB)

Re: Re-Introduction (Transformation!)
Sensei: You dialed right in on it. I am absorbing frantically, please keep it coming! Man I got a steep learning curve to ascend but as they say "grab that bull by the uh er HORNS yeah thats it, lets not make that mistake again!
Pilar's Mate: I gave up swimming in the ocean when I gained the upmost respect for White Sharks in college particularly when I learned how abundant they are even though you don't see them. I saw my first live animal out at the Farallons last year, what a magnificent sight! It swam by about 6 feet of the port side stealthily below the surface, just a big black torpedo shaped shadow.
I hope to make up there sooner or later, if my home port reverts back to Humboldt again then it will be sooner!
Did you hear about the animal crusaders that nursed a couple seal pups back to health and then took out to the Farallons for lunch, I mean release?
WaterDog: FishRig (my PSD) loves pullin Coastal that was his true mission in my life after all. We pulled her from Seattle to CA over a weekend, trip was fllawless!
Deepslayer: Yeah, we had some beautiful days this year as I heard yall up north did too.
Thank you for warm welcome everyone, this is definitely a great place during work, uh I mean my spare time!

Re: Re-Introduction (Transformation!)
She's a beauty. I took the liberty of editing the photo and making the water level (well almost level) so I didn't get sea sick looking at it. I also re-sized it to fit on the screen without scrolling.
What is the bar on the back? Downrigger holder? What are the electronics? How old is it? How many hours?

Re: Re-Introduction (Transformation!)
MB - I never ran into a shark in Santa Monica. Last time I enjoyed the waters of Malibu, though, I got to drive 1,000 miles home with a broken big toe. I am thankful, however, that it was not my neck. It must have been a spectacular wipe-out because the lifeguard met me at the edge of the water when I finally managed to stop tumbling long enough to get out of there.

Re: Re-Introduction (Transformation!)
Pitch,
Thanks for the foto edit! I am not sure what "bar" you are refering to?
The Downriggers are Penn electrics. It is currently equipped with a Coastal Navigator Depth Sounder, Sitex Loran, and VHF. The electronocs are fairly old but top of the line in their day. I will be needing to rework them ASAP. I plan to relocate the Loran for
back-up, replace the depth sounder with something more compact, add a chartplotter GPS and Radar, and CD player of course
The hull is vintage 89 but the engine is 95 with 350 hours. Also has a Johnson 15 kicker circa 1989. The boat was originally a gasser but later repowered. The guy I bought the boat from is a wholesaler of Volvo engines so the repower was done properly and has been maintaned by the letter. The hull/interior was maticulously cared for and is in near perfect cond, and has the standard features with the marine head. Survey came up clean! My cruise speed is 20 -25 knots and my range is about 350 miles.
All in all for once in my life I got a good deal on something.

Re: Re-Introduction (Transformation!)
The bar is above the transom with yellow dots on the side of whatever is on it (downriggers?). It kind of looks like car-topper wheels. You carry this boat upside down on top of a pickup?

Re: Re-Introduction (Transformation!)
MB,
Around 1967 I had a Great White swim over me when I was in 90' of water just north of Salt Point State Park. I had to replace my wetsuit  because the stain would not come off. The same year I was under a pod of killer whales just inside the cove at Salt Point.
Is there still a large anchor at the entrance to Salt Point Park? We salvaged it, if it is still there, and when we got it to the high tide line the State Park people confiscated it from us.
Pitch Pocket,
Lets hear a great big D'OH!!

Keta,
A buddy of mine keeps trying to get me to go ab diving in that neck of the woods. I believe in mutual respect, I will stay out of there territory and they can stay out of mine. Honestly my biggest problem is my ears are really hard to equilibrate!
I believe there is an anchor there, when head over to the Gualala this steelhead season, I will try to remember a look for it.

Re: Re-Introduction (Transformation!)
A yes, lets not forget about the orcas! A few years ago we had a pod hangin out at the Klamath mouth. The sand bar on the spit was tall so you could not see to ocean while fishing but every now and then you would see an aerial sea lion popping up over the horizon as the orcas torchured them playfully. They are such sadistic creatures!

Re: Re-Introduction (Transformation!)
I don't have a boat capable of doing tuna up here and can only hope for an invite some day because I miss the heck out of it and have quite a bit of gear gathering dust in my garage for it but I would like to comment on the shark thing. I used to body surf in So. California too. Then one day on a charter out of San Diego, I fought a fish for twenty minutes only to have it stop dead, lay there, take about 30 yards in three big sudden yanks, lay there, yank one more time, then start to give. It was dead weight from there on out. Brought in a head I could wrap my arms around. What was left of a Big yellowfin. I haven't swam in the ocean since. Whatever did that could eat anything it wanted.

Re: Re-Introduction (Transformation!)
Yup, that would do it! When I was in college, my roomates entire existence revolved around sharks he has even be portrayed on Discovery a time or two. Anyway, he used to investgate all the local shark attacks on the North Coast. I worked on at least a couple with him and think that was my turning point! The more I learned about these creatures the more I decided that I would give them all the space they could ever need from me.
The funny thing is that most of the surfers encounters that we interviewed said they would still go back out again. One guy was surfing at the Klamath mouth amongst the seals feeding on the salmon...DUH...the food chain is only a cool thing if you are not on the menu or you are at the apex.

That is a beauty Master Baiter. Don't let them boys give ya a hard time about those Fathomasters. I have a set just like'em on my boat and I know your gonna love them.
What exactly is the volvo AD31P w/DP. I'm not sure but I think you just purchased a boat on my top 5 list.

Re: Re-Introduction (Transformation!)
FP,
Sorry it took me so long to reply, had to head up to Humboldt this weekend and fish the rivers before they closed again.
The Volvo AD31P/DP is a 4 cylinder 139 HP turbo charged diesel w/ the duo prop outdrive. I shopped for this boat for a year and a half, hard to find a diesel in a boat that size.
