Default When is best time to go Rockfishin?

I have noticed last couple weeks seems the ocean has been pretty smooth and weather nice as well. Is this a good a time as any to go out rockfishing?? I have never went out on the ocean and would like to go via charter sometime with my fiance. We would be going out of Newport....any charters better than the rest there??
Any info would be appreciated,
thanks
Russ

Russ - I'm not sure about Newport, but I'm thinking you've missed the window. Most of the Charters are shut down for the year. The ocean is just to unpredictable now. If they book trips most would get cancelled (or you would not want to be there anyway.) Try May-Sept next year. I could be wrong, there may be some die-hard charters out there (and Neport is a nice bar.)
I went last Sat for a last hoorah trip. Had a great ride and great fishing. Hope I'm wrong and you get to go!

There are charters that run all year but the weather is very unpredictable! February usually has a lull in the winter storms and the Lingds are usually plentiful, at that time. I use South Beech charters but there are a number of competent companies.
Have fun!

I think you missed it. The best bottom fishing occurs in Feb, Mar. Grab the first charter out at the first weather lull next early spring and have a ball.

You can call Tradewinds and ask for Rob. (I went to school with him)....they sneak out now and again if the need arises.

A friend went yesterday, south by Seal Rock, and caught 3 lings and 18 bass....the lings were good size.

The best time is usually any day that ends in "Y"

I know the charters here out of coos bay have been doing really well. Averaging about an hour and a half to limit the boat last weekend. The ocean has been really smooth also. If you're interested call the Betty Kay charters in Charleston.
