Finally got to go fish Odell. With all the reports of Odell having little kokanee this year, and with plenty of bigger kokes on hand waiting for the smoker, it was easy to pick "big" over "lots". The depth sounder immediately had us hooked on that idea. Too bad they weren't as cooperative as they were THICK. This bunch had us pretty excited. We trolled through them for hours without a bump.
This was a pretty important trip, since my brother in law was sick with cancer last year and missed the entire spring and summer of fishing (and the rest of life for that matter). It was awesome to see him back in great shape, clear of cancer, and after several patient hours, into a nice fish. I didn't mind at all that he had all the action. Silver J-plug at 2.5 mph did the trick, after we moved out into deeper water and targeted suspended fish.
Monday I got to entertain our pastor and his two boys. This one (7)couldn't belive we needed a net like this, given he'd never seen anything put a planter rainbow.
His big brother (9) got in the act, and didn't seem to mind catching a "little one". This one fell to a Rapala Shad Rap magnum -- a saltwater lure retrofitted with fine wire hooks.
All his little brother could come up with was a j-plug cluster -- note the rubber band -- gave some convincing life when the line first popped out of the downrigger. I have no idea how this happened, or where in the world the rubber band came from, but I do know the driving got a little crazy when I let the 9 year old take the helm. The little guy had a good time in spite of not catching a fish. We actually had to get him to fake the pout. He beamed the whole time. I wish I had his maturity when it comes to enjoying the outing regardless of the catch!
