Default boat down at gold beach

heard that at 18 or 20 foot boston whaler type boat, open bow, went down in the jaws this morning. they got one guy out who had on a life jacket and the coast guard helo pulled another out after searching for 40 or so mins. no life jacket, or the waves tore it off. guess it was real rough, large seas. whats left of the boat is on the south jetty rocks all broke up.

This time of year can be really treacherous. The wind maybe down but the developing storms in the Gulf of Alaska can throw really big swells down the coast.

I would be looking at the swell models that can be found on the NOAA weather pages. This weekend it was predicted that 9-12' sells would be going all the way down the coast to Monterey, CA.

3 of us were fishing in the channel next to the n jetty. the tide had started to come in, when 2 guys came by us at full speed, whooping and hollering, and waved at us. we waved back and they went straight into the boil at the entrance. we looked at each other and just shook our heads. it appeard to be a 14-16 foot open boat, and we didn't notice any life vests being worn.
10 or 15 min. later we could see vehicles with red lights show up and people wearing orange. then a coast guard helicopter started making a search of the area. a cutter was standing off. (way off). the choper pulled one person out of the water after about 30-45 min. who appeared gone. we didn't see the other guy, but we could see the boat breaking up on the rocks. bad juju.

Hey - No bad days - Welcome aboard. Just tried to sneak in here did ya? This is sort of a story, but we'd rather hear a good fish story from you and an intro.
You been in Cabo? That's where "no bad days" originated as far as I know (along with "You're in Cabo - do anything you want, nobody knows you!)" I'd love to hear a Cabo story - Oh ya, been too long!

No bad days, welcome to the board. Tell us more about where this happened. Does the Coast guard plug the bar when its rough? They do in Tillamook.

Ugly story when people go swimming but consider your story ticket punched.

The USCG pulls out of Gold Beach sometime after Labor Day each year. Pretty much up to the boat captain as to whether or not the bar is a go. It's such a shallow bar that any swell at all makes for some nasty rollers.

If the administration gets it's way and eliminates all coastal dredge funding and pulls the part-time CG presence from all the small ports, it's REALLY going to get ugly the next few years.
