Tuna tackle
The stores in KF laugh at me when I go to buy tuna gear. Where can I mail order some tackle.

Re: Tuna tackle
Try Ebay. some of the folks on Ebay have their own sites and really good deals. I got 5 6" trolling lures in the colors I wanted rigged on 200Lb 6ft leaders crimped with hooks for $20. Jigs rigs and stuff
Another place that will do mail order is Charkbait

Re: Tuna tackle
Keta, Other than the basic tackle, I would avoid buying too much on the internet. Sometimes it can be more expensive than a run to the nearest Englund Marine Store. Besides you can't feel or hold that Yozuri planer or package of mexican flag tuna clones. Or hear the clicker on a Shimano TD 30 two speed. Sensual things like that are part of being a diehard tuna-holic. But crasing bait has some good websites. I would add

Re: Tuna tackle
Keta, Last I looked they had stores in Crescent City, Eureka, and Charleston.
http://www.englundmarine.com/contact.html
The one in Charleston is supposed to have a good collection of tuna gear. They also are great at doing phone orders.

I will be in Reedsport on 10/25 and it is only 25 or 30 miles to Charleston. I think I'll drive down, it's been over 20 years since I have gone there.

Re: Tuna tackle
That's the trouble facing us "landlocked" folks, Keta. There is a wide range of tackle at our disposal but, its all in trout and panfish gear. :depressed:
Yes, Hamachi, these are places for those who dream of "bluewater safari". I've got a hard copy in every head.

Re: Tuna tackle
Pilar and all,
Good question:
<font size="2" face="verdana, arial, helv">What do we need? I was looking at reels for example, and the Penn 975D looked pretty good, but the truth is, I haven't a clue. This isn't going to be one of those deals where the boat is the cheap part, is it?
A lot of us wannabe's are gonna need advice on reels, rods, line, and rigging before we ever get to the lures and terminal tackle. Anybody out there willing to limp up to the plate and say it all over again? We're listening - with checkbooks in hand.

Re: Tuna tackle
Keta - I love my Daiawa (SP?) sealines (50H's I think?) I bought originally for OS Sturgeon but found they are great in the salt. I think I paid $130. Drags are great. No levelwind (which I don't want on a reel like that).
If we had got out last Sat you would have had a chance to use one and get a feel. :depressed:

Re: Tuna tackle
What is a Flying Roast Beef doing on a fishing page??? The way that I do it, is to copy the http address in a browser with a right click, then insert it into the text. For some reason the hidden code carries over and when you hit it, it will send you there in another browser window.

Keta, you can rebuild a 6/0 in the dark, on a tailgate without your glasses and here's the most amazing part: Amid the scent of freshly carked tuna!

Re: Tuna tackle
Keta
If you are shopping around for that Shimano Tiagra or the TLD 30 2-speeds try ordering from Campbells Pro-Tackle (look up on search for actual address). Its an Australian company that sells way cheaper than the states. I got my 50 wide Tiagra for $100.00 bucks cheaper than ANY internet price or catalogs. I don't know how they do it but its a great deal on some items and anything over $200.00 Austrilian dollars (about $125.00 U.S.) is shipped over for free. I have used them 3 or 4 times and they are extemely professional.

Re: Tuna tackle
John,
I can get heavy mono for leaders, up to 300 pound, from BiMart. What I need is heavy hardware, Cedar Plugs, Zukers, ect. I want a left hand 113 Senator reel too, but I think that is taken care of (like I realy need another medium size reel). I got a some tandom hooks, Ceder Plugs and Sevenstrand feathers when I was in Portland last week. I still have a few large Sampo ball bearing swivels left.
I would like to have a small but complete set of tuna lures and gear.

Re: Tuna tackle
Keta, I just got an email from boatUS and they have one of the Penn 975 reels on special.
http://www.boatus-store.com/browse/item.asp?IID=38609
It only a few bucks more than the ones I see going for on ebay. Plus you don't have the hassle of dealing with an unknown dealer. The 975 is a good all around reel for light tackle saltwater fishing. A friend uses it for live bait albacore fishing in SoCal all the time.
Another good spot to check out in Charleston is the tackle shop in the boat basin. Osprey Steve, a friend that lies a half mile from Charleston says they have a good selection too.

Re: Tuna tackle
I have used the 975 for the past 2 seasons for tuna (drop back/casting/fish traps), salmon and sturgeon (in the esturary sp?) and it has worked great. I love the drag and it casts very smoothly. It is a great reel.
Lamiglas (yes, I saw the long list of posts about them) makes a rod for the new braided lines. It has a great butt (long) and mates well with the 975. I can not remember the model but it was around $100-$125. I think it comes in a 6'6" and 7' (not sure) I think mine is the 7' one piece (a bit longer for better casting). I loaded the reel with 30lb line and it fast became my favorite set up for most of my fishing. My friend bought the 965 before they came out with the 975. He loved it, except the 965 was a bit short on the capacity. When the 975 came out I took the plunge and have been very happy. The price quoted above for $179 is a great price.

Re: Tuna tackle
If you're looking for some good deals, browse the Saltwater Pro Shop at Gofishin.com
They often have Tuna and Halibut gear at substantial discounts. Lots of limited quantity stuff including Penn, Shimano and Okuma reels. They are a Canadian company that specializes in close outs. I have been very happy with 4 orders I have placed so far.
