Exploring the ocean
Called Lori on my crew last evening and we decided to go out beyond the horizon this morning to actually see what is out there for temps.
We left at 05:20 this morning, with no honest expectations for finding Tuna. This was more an opportunity to test out the gear spread, work out any bugs, set up the lines, etc and take an actual look to see what things are doing out there.
Went out to 45.00 x 125.10 area, with no Temp greater than 52.5 to be seen. It was overcast with occasional light rain in the area out there. There was 10-15 miles of 51-52 degree water, and no real indication that the temp was raising the further west we went. I see in another thread started today, that the commercials are working the 130 area. A commercial fisherman I spoke with yesterday was saying 300ish miles, which sounds about right.
The SST of the area last evening that showed warmer water is strictly from daytime warming from sun exposure. The water on the way out this morning before sun exposure was in the 48-49 degree range. On the way back in, after the sun had been beating on it most of the day was in the 52-53 degree range.
Was still a nice boat ride, and gave me an opportunity to check out the new gear spread with the outriggers in place.

Saw a fair amount of birds, both flying, and sitting on the surface. Didn't see much crashing bait, but a few occasionally. Water was clear and blue, just too cold.
I'm guessing at a minimum another 2-3 weeks.

Re: Exploring the ocean
Nancy I think we created a monster in Lori. When she came out to tell me you two were going fishing she was smiling ear to ear. Wish I could have made the trip with you girls. Thanks for the invite.
To bad the fishing gods weren't there to reward your efforts. I the boys fishing the OTC better take warning from you gals.

Re: Exploring the ocean
Glad to hear that you got the boat out for a test run with the new gear. I might have to stop by and check out the out riggers, they look interesting. Aways looking for new ideas.

Re: Exploring the ocean
I have to say, the ocean was like a huge lake out there today. It was more a therapeutic day for me, just getting out on the ocean and all.

Re: Exploring the ocean
Good job Nancy, thanks for info! Do you think your findings jive with this shot? Looks like the warmer water is coming closer up North.... The dataset for this shot is supposed to be day & night.

Re: Exploring the ocean
I would say those pictures show warmer water than what we experienced out on scene. Again, my strong suspicion is that that is more directly from the sun exposure, and the water is cooling down a lot when it is clouded over, or at night.
That second shot (the zoomed in one) makes it look like there's high 50's degree water in the area we were seeing nothing over 52.4. Certainly the day before we went out there, it was sunny and had direct sun exposure on that area, so it had warmed up.
On the way back in, area that had been 48-50 in the run out in the morning was 52-53 in the areas that had the direct sun exposure, way inside of where we ran out to. The cloud cover began at about 25 miles offshore, and was pretty solid to the outside.
IF we had a good week or so of sunny and warm days, and SW current, we may be able to start producing some better temps consistently. I don't see either of those things happening in the NEAR future of this next week.
