Re: Miss B
We sure picked the wrong day Keta. Sunday was real nice, just a little NE breeze 5 knots maybe. I talked a couple of folks on the dock into riding along to drop the pots Sunday AM. I really just didn't want to have to clean out the bait that had been cooking in those pots since Friday afternoon without a good soaking. The good news is we got 32 crab in a couple of hours of soaking. The bad news is I have a horrible vibration at speed on the port engine. We wouldn't have been able to go out Saturday anyway, at least not very far at 8 knots (my current top speed).
I either picked up a rope somehow (didn't see, feel or hear anything) or I've got a strut bearing going out. It could be that the shaft zinc I had come loose a while back blocked the water flow to the bearing and now it's shot.
Anyway - I need to get the boat pulled and checked out. Sorry we couldn't get some fishing time in, but I'm just glad we weren't out 50 miles when that vibration started.

Re: Miss B
Crabbed Astoria Sat evening and Sun AM. Wierd evening Saturday, wind howling, only 11 crabs for 2-1/2 hour soak. Not even very big, but hard (er) shell and full of meat.
Sunday AM was windy and choppy until we got to near Ilwaco where the wind died and the water was FLAT. Dropped pots at 7am and headed for the sunken south jetty. Each pass yielded immediate hookups. Ling cod (2 @ 29" and 1 shaker), a large Cabazon and a Kelp Greenling (can you say Seafood stew?). Back to pull pots and we had an easy limit of 24 crabs. Could have taken double that. Pots full was the rule. Big crab and very much harder than 2 weeks ago. We're heading back wknd of October 26 for last hurrah before dragging the boat back to winter at St Helens and sturgeon Nov 23.

Bummer about the boat not running right. You couldn't have possibly ran over rope.

Yes, now my moniker matches my boat name and my moniker on the other fishing boards.

Re: Miss B
It wasn't a rope..... It was a DANG TARP. Diver said he thought it was one of those tarps they use to cover lumber stacks with (he works construction at his day job). He left me part of it so I can have it mounted. ! I guess it was just all wound up, shaft, strut one blade on the wheel.
Pete reminded me, I forgot about that port engine dying. It was right as I was turning around in the basin to back in wasn't it! That was it. I was trying to figure when it happened and why I didn't feel it.

Re: Miss B
Thanks Keta, I wondered who was donating the nickles to my auto-pilot fund. I've got just about enough to buy that TR-1 I've been pining away for. Maybe I should park my boat a little closer to Mis-b-havin!

Re: Miss B
Miss B,
Plastic bags kill lots of boats. My brother had one wrap around his raw water intake and overheated his engine. We got it shut down in time but had to run home, only 5 miles, on the kicker.
Pitch,
You're welcome.

Re: Miss B
Hey Keta!!!! Now that Miss B has introduced you to a REAL boat, Southwest Airlines has a special on right now for three days where the fare to Tampa-St. Pete is only 94 bucks.
Let's see a nice Blackfin 32' with twin Cummins diesels.... Should I make arrangements for an agent at the Panama Canal???

Re: Miss B
sorry to hear of the prob Mel. between you and I we should have everything cleaned up down that way as far as ropes and tarps go. I'm still waiting for clutches for one of my trannies. When you have mechanical trans like mine instead of stopping the engine it take out the clutches and thats a boat buck and a half or maybe 3 to 4 if I need a transplant.should check your cutless bearings though does not take much there if you wrapped something around a strut. Good luck...Roger

Re: Miss B
Mel, I think you should invest in a wet or dry suit and a face mask. You could have saved yourself a lot of money over the last couple of weeks. You'd also be able to clear your prop when you are 50 miles out and pick up another tarp!

Re: Miss B
Steve -Ya but then I'd have to learn to swim, hold my breath, enjoy cold water, play with sharps, get in the water with all those big feesh (you know- the ones with all the sharp teeth!) etc etc etc.
Instead, I just worked a deal with my diver. I'm just going to pay him the $60 bucks to go fishing with me every trip !

Re: Miss B
Pitch-pocket, I'll be there with 9/0 reel and a XXXH rod when Miss-B dives on his boat out fifty miles from shore. Let's see maybe a great white or mako would love to have a piece of the black swimming object under the boat. Once we got a 'core wrapped in the wheel and the sharks were there johnny on the spot even without any blood in the water.
If he is serious about diving himself on the boat, a hooka is a must. It is simple to make. You need a good oil-less compressor and a regulator. A simple single stage regulator for about eighty bucks works fine. The other style hooka with the glass jar might come in handy to work up courage to go in.

Yeah, I guess that would be chumming though. Is that legal?

I have a dry suit somewhere that I can't get into if there is someone that is short, 5'6" and skiny, 140 lbs.
My uni suit still fits my short fat carcass.

Re: Miss B
Pitch-pocket, No it wouldn't be chumming. We would be live bait fishing. We'll just put the 10/0 hook in the wetsuit and hope we can reel Miss B in fast enough that the sharks wouldn't take too big a chunk out if him. But then is live bait fishing in the ocean legal???

Hey, Keta.... I think I found a boat in Florida...
If Miss B is disabled, this one might fit the bill to chase 'core.

Deepslayer, if you think this is rough you should have been there when I told Pete and Keta we wereen't going Tuna fishing. I think that tarp was actually supposed to have ME in it, not my wheel.

Re: Miss B
Oh the soft whine of the wind through my head (vacant spaces theory?), is that all we get to listen to until next summer, or at least June (Mexico!) I already am unable to stand the thought that I have to fish for other fish until then. Sad sad statement of a fresh tunaholic.....Ed, help me here...where is the closest albacore now???? Can't be all that far that a long weekend drive and a short boat ride won't put us on them! Guess Salmon and Sturgeon will have to serve to quell the tunaholics stress.

You're right, it would be difficult to re-bait if the shark took too big of a bite. We'd have to draw straws.

Re: Miss B
Sorry Dave. If memory serves me right they migrate up the coast and then over towards Japan. That's a little longer than a short boat ride!!! We will just have to do it more often next year. Maybe we can burn ourselves out - NOT!

Re: Miss B
Deepslayer, as in the old song.... but wait that was yesterday and yesterday is gone......
Did you see the latest on the supposed el Nino????
If you look carefully at the right edge, that is Central America and I see a finger of warm water going up the coast of Mexico early in the season. Does that mean 'core in June?????

Looks good Sensei San. Waht's it look like in October/November. Maybe it will work its way up here and extend the season longer. How about Albacore two miles off shore.
Miss B I have an oar in the basement. How about a sail?

Re: Miss B
Deepslayer - Ok.... you got one oar in the basement, how many in the water?
Miss B doesn't need any more sail area, trust me. She blows around just fine as she is. The problem is the wind is usually blowing the way I don't want her to go and she doesn't tack all that good.
Besides, if I need more sail, I'll just use the tarps that get caught in my wheels.
