Tuna trip for 10/8
I think I will be running from Chinook, Wa. Wednesday for a look, see, feel fall tuna run off the Columbia. The fish are still there, the weather is looking doable and the SST pics show water within 30 miles that should be in the 58 to 59 range with good breaks. I will be on channel 78 and will answer to Marty or Xta-Sea, and if the weather is clear we will leave before the big rip or wait til it is done and head out about 8 or 8:30. Call at 503 623-6030 or I will be monitoring the radio between 8:30 and 9:00 pm on channel 78.
Maybe some brave soul could catch a few tuna and then head to the meeting bloodsplattered, wild eyed with a fresh kill under each arm and a handful of spoons for some sushi delights. Hopefully I will be able to attend myself to meet the rest of the crazy's.
The Hoorah!!

Re: Tuna trip for 10/8
Marty, why out of Chinook? Less people? Better ramp? vs. Hammond/Warrenton?
I might be able to get there. I've got the shakes just thinking about it.
You couldn't just let it go could you Marty! I was sitting here hoping everyone would just let Uglygreens post go and wait till next season......but NO, you couldn't resist......and now I can't resist! Aaaaaaaahhhhhhhhh!
(hookset....twitch, twitch....hookset)
I was contemplating a salmon trip for tomorrow but now you've ruined it!
Let me know about the questions if you're still around.

Corrirod - None of the rest of us can forget UG's post, why should you. Esp if you can go tomorrow. PS - if you can go fishing, you can make the meeting!

Re: Tuna trip for 10/8
Okay Corrirod,
Here's the top ten reasons for NOT going tuna fishing tomorrow.
10. It smells bad.
9. Cats will use your boat for a bordello.
8. All of your friends will call and beg for fish.
7. Your next months Texaco bill will be really high.
6. The freezer is already full.
5. Bimart is out of jars.
4. It will cost $100 to refill the 4/0 with tuffline.
3. Sunburn and/or 'permagrin' is really painful.
2. 'Bill' is looking for a few more good rods.
And the number one reason for not going tuna fishing tomorrow...
1. My girl said if I go fishin one more time she's gonna leave me ..... damn, I'm gonna miss her.
Well, I tried!
Gotcha Jen! ... Yes I am an agent of Satan, but my duties are largely ceremonial. Muh ha ha ha ha ha ha !

Other than the thrill of the fight, what would a person do with 900lbs of tuna?

foxer - "D'oh" , who cares? (did I do that right Keta?).
Oh ya - they can get 10 boat bucks and up for one of these sport caught fish on the east coast. There's a lot of Sashimi there.

Re: Tuna trip for 10/8
Alright, alright already! Thanks Jen. I knew I could count on you to bring some sense to this thing!
Well, I better go get the boat...... and then I've got to call the bank so I can get some financing for the trip. :depressed:
In A.A. they say you have to hit rock bottom before you can recover, so I guess in regards to Tuna-Anon......................I'm not there yet!
I may have room for one if anyone's interested. WP?
Anybody know anything about the ramp at Chinook, Wa?

Re: Tuna trip for 10/8
Corrirod
Hammond and Warranton are fine, but I have a slip in Chinook and have used that port for 6 or 8 years. It is further to go, but its like home to me. If you went, I could meet you at bouy 10 at a certain hour or ??? My partner has a cell phone and I think I still have yours. I will be leaving here at 6:00 and driving up and staying in a slip for the night.
Just remember that pain and indecision are shortlived, but fame is forever.
Give me a call or I will call you later on your cell to check in.

Re: Tuna trip for 10/8
Corrirod - That Chinook ramp is in a Foreign Country, you need a passport
Don't know the ramp, but make sure you follow the channel out. Baker Bay is a lot like Tillamook, lots of Sand and a little water. If you're not linked up with Marty, go out of Hammond for gosh sakes. You'll have it all to yourself this time of year. Only advantage I know of on the "dark side" of the river is that all the Canneries are in Illwacko. If you get more fish than you can deal with, Chinook is closer to the Canneries.

Re: Tuna trip for 10/8
You all are killing me with this tuna talk....good luck to everybody and play it safe on that bar...I'll enjoy reading the posts....
Hey Foxer, I don't know about all the rest of us Tuna chasers, but when I pull in the driveway with the boat, the whole neighborhood thinks a seafood store just opened. "Hey, I see you went crabbing" "Hey what did you catch this time?" In other words the supply dwindles rapidly and you can smell the canners and bbqs all over the place.
Pilar's Mate, you better just hang on to that rod this time -- I don't want to read in the San Diego paper about a commercial guy catching a Bluefin with a purple cedar plug in its mouth and towing an ugly stick around...maybe you should engrave your rod "if found, please return to:"
Oh, Corrirod, I still think your Trophy is little small to live in full time  Where can I find a wife like yours?

Re: Tuna trip for 10/8
Yer **** skippy we'll be at the party Rod. I figure on just yarding the boat out and driving to Hillsburrito. What a sight if we will be if we are lucky. That place will never be the same.
Float Plan
Johnboy and Puffins Crew on Pilar.
0500 roll
0800 Launch at Hammond.
0900 Run the bar and go to 46 125 or to a good break.
1500 Back from the perimeter and across the bar.
1700 Pull up and run home.
Can't make any sense of UG's numbers. is the middle pair missing?
SST shows 60 - 61 but it is at N46.00 x W 125.20. It is 58 about 10 miles short of that.
Does anyone have UGs numbers..... all of it?
How 'bout it guys, what are you doing tomorrow? What's your game plan?

Re: Tuna trip for 10/8
Pilar - the best temp break of todays terrafin pic is almost exactly where we hit the fish on Saturday last.
From the latest terrafin:
46 Degrees, 10 minutes north
124 degrees, 45 minutes west
Last Fish were at (from GPS):
46.115 degrees north
124.753 degrees west
15 minutes = .25 degrees
30 minutes = .50 degrees
45 minutes = .75 degrees
60 minutes = 1.0 degrees of latitude or longitude....

Re: Tuna trip for 10/8
I get N46' 06.900" W124' 45.180"
Take a look at the Astoria canyon and where your mark is. Structure .... fish. There is a little patch of warm at N45' 53.100" W125' 10.000".
Maybe go to your previous stomping ground and then run towards the other spot. Right down the edge of the canyon.
I have a more recent shot from this AM. I'll E it to you UG.

Re: Tuna trip for 10/8
God bless 'em, every one.
Let them come home safe and loaded with tuna - and/or other fun fish.
Steve/Mel: Don't feel too bad, I'm in the same boat - working today. My yellow po' safely hanging on the garage wall.
See all you shorebound souls this evening. We'll lift a glass to the boys who ventured across the bar this morning. It will be great to see them this afternoon, but I have a feeling they'll be busy dealing with dead feesh!
Oh, and Pilar - you dog! Of all people, I never thought YOU would come up with reasons NOT to go tuna fishing!
