Took my gf fishing on saturday. I originally planned on going to Fish Lake, but it turns out they're paving the boat ramp and it was off limits. We were there the week before, thanks for the notice, geez
So anyway, I decided to hit Lake of the Woods instead. Got on the water by about 9:30 and man, it was stormy. The wind was blowing 3-4' white caps from the south. I saw some little tin-topper boats out there, but then they got the hell of the lake before they were swamped.
We headed over the the east side to start trolling. When we stopped to rig up I notice tons and tons of little invertebrates on the surface of the water. I'm not really sure what they were. Some looks like nymphs, but the other might have been some sort of shrimp. Fortunately, all the kokes were in the same area. We would motor to the south end and let the wind blow us back north (about 1.2-1.6mph on the gps).
Within about 20 minutes my gf hooks up with her first koke ever. Unfortunately, the she had the hot setup. A yellow Rocky Mount UV dodger and yellow/green UV RMT spinner and no corn (since I didn't bring any). I tossed every green thing I had in for one LDR on an orange apex. The fish were concentrated on the north east end of the lake 25-40 feet down in 54 feet of water. There were loads of fish schooling, just look for the clumps of fish and those are the kokes.
We ended up with 5 in the cooler and 3 or 4 LDRs. Not great, but she would hook a fish on nearly every pass, so not too bad. The kokes were 8-12" and kinda chunky.
I tried for trout later in the day trolling flatfish and rapalas, but no luck.
The weekend before, my gf also caught a 17" 3lb "trophy trout" the DFW planted, trolling a J8 rapala. This is one of my favorite lakes in southern oregon, but the fishing can be really spotty, especially when the water warms up later in the summer.
