Re: Newport Salmon
I can give you a report from Depoe Bay for this past
weekend ... the fish were hot and heavy for the past
week with most of the Newport fleet fishing North to
above Depoe bay. The charter boats have been slaying
them with typical trips lasting 2 hours or less. The
commercial boats out of Newport and Dopey Bay have
been getting scores of between 40 and 85 fish a day!
Unfortunatly, the fish went off the bite Saturday and
both the charter and commercial fleets were having a
hard time filling the boats. On Sunday almost the
entire Newport commercial fleet was up off Depoe Bay,
but the fish had moved North up to the 50-52 line
(between Nescowin and the mouth of the Nestucca River).
The bulk of the feeder fish (under 20 lbs.) are out
in 50-60 fathoms of water, down about 150 feet. There
is *tons* of bait between Newport and Depoe Bay so
the fish may return later this week. There was so much
bait in the water column this weekend that the Sole
were feeding almost all the way to the surface! Salmon
fishermen were catching a lot more sole in the Deope
Bay area than they were salmon ... and they were typically
running thier gear 8-10 fathoms off the bottom!!
The charter boats that are having the best luck are
running either whole herring (blue or purple packs)
or plug cut herring 3.5 to 4 feet beind a flasher.
Good luck next weekend!!
