Default TUNA TUNA TUNA - SAT 10/5/02

While the rest of you were at home watching the Beavers lose :depressed: We snuck out for a quick Tuna hunt Saturday afternoon. I conned a friend into taking his boat out of Hammond to go have a look at the warm water approximatly 30 miles off the mouth of the Columbia. We left Hammond around 11:00 AM and crossed a relativly flat bar just before high slack. The sewll was about 5-6 feet and the wind was calm, no wind waves to speak of. I had seen the following SST pic the day before.

We found a good temp break (see picture) with birds and porposies working at approx 26 miles, and dropped back the gear. Immeadiatly got a double, and hit fish about every 10 minutes for the next two hours. Came back with 20 albicore up to 35 lbs. We fished out to 32 miles and were back at the dock around 5 PM.

We had one fish that we fought for about 45 minutes at the end, and no, this one did not get away . The guys at the dock said it was a bluefin, and our scale wasnt big enough. One of the local commercial guys went and got a bigger scale, the fish was 102.6 lbs!!!

No jumpers seen, water temp was 59 and green on the east side of the temp break, 61-61.5 and green areas mixed with blue areas on the west side about a mile away. There was one heck of a rip with lots of trash and weeds in the break area, the rip was at least 500 feet wide in spots. Wow!

My buddy is gonna call me wit the GPS numbers and Ill post them if anyone is interested.

UG

(sorry it took so long to post this, I fished friday night with fear no fish at McNary, slept 4 hours, drove straight thru to Hammond, Took a nap, went out for tuna, and when we got back yesterday afternoon I was too tired to do anything other than write a "thanks" to FNF and sleep till about noon today, I have been cutting and puttin fish away since then till now.)

Hey UG, great to hear your report. I guess we didn't get the last tuna of the season last Wednesday. Marty is going to have a fit when he reads your post!

That bluefin is quite the hog. What did it hit, and was it waaay back?

Later......Mark Mc

LAT LON for the fish

46.115 N
124.753 W

The large one hit a Mexican Flag feather jig on the longest pole behimd the boat, 250-300 ft back. We were having our best luck fishing a little fast at 8-9 mph.

There are a buncha fish in that area if the wind lets anyone out again.

I just want to go on record as saying that Pilar and I are totally responsible for UG catching that feesh! We were at the beach with NO BOAT.

Good Job! Nawwws Feeeesh!

NOW THATS WHAT I"M TALKIN ABOUT!!! Great report and a super fish. From the angle of the pics it almost looks like a big eye tuna, but the guys at the dock know their stuff. You should really look into the Oregon State Record books as there are so few of these fish caught on rod and reel, you may be in the record books. None-the-less You are forcing me to trailer up there and sniff around. You don't get many opportunity's to catch fish of this caliber in these waters. Way to go.

All pics "expire" after a period of time, so it's gone. If we didn't purge 'em once in a while, we'd be totally buried in high-volume jpg files.

UG probably has the pic still and when he stumbles across this thread maybe he'll repost it. <hint, hint>

All I remember was that that was one heck of a big fish.

Ya know, this kind of stuff gives me the shakes. REading stories of 100lb fish, flat ocean, doubles every ten minutes. This story is 5 years old and it still has me jazzed about the possibility of a bigg'n out there. Then with Deans Do Do last summer........we just need someone to get that bill fish in our group.

My only complaint. The man catches a #102 BFT and this is all;

We had one fish that we fought for about 45 minutes at the end, and no, this one did not get away . The guys at the dock said it was a bluefin, and our scale wasnt big enough. One of the local commercial guys went and got a bigger scale, the fish was 102.6 lbs!!!

I can talk for 10 minutes about a Drive by. The understatement and humbleness in announcing this catch is astounding.

I would sure like to see the pics too. On June 30, 2007 we had something stretch our bungie to the max and then break 200# test tuna cord. We had 250# mono for leaders to the Mexican Flags. Anyway, would sure like to see what broke that cord!

I talked to "Fish Dancer" at Depoe and they were spooled twice today by something "big and fast". They caught 13 albies close to 61 spot as far as I could gather from there explanation. I don't think they are "Salty Dogs" since they had a blank stare on their faces when I mentioned 61.

We had one fish on today that was taking line with the drag cranked down hard. It eventually came unbottoned after a couple of minutes, but it wasn't anywhere near turning yet. Would have liked to have seen that one.

So its already been done. I remember a post about tuna the size of garbage cans but don't remember who posted it. That distance is in my range but I have no clue how to get one to bite. Maybe that giant reel I have with the boat winch for a handle may have a purpose in the future. Gotta think about a new handle though.

Question Re: TUNA TUNA TUNA - SAT 10/5/02

Bluefin tuna caught in October off the Washington, Oregon coasts. Now that's something everyone can wish for.

I am curious if anyone remembers anything about that summers water temps. Were they fairly normal for our area or was it a summer of extra warm waters with people catching albacore 15 miles off the beach at Westport and other places?

WD.
