Default am i straight on this?

You go 7 to 20 miles out looking for the 60 f water temp
troll 7-10 knots looking for the school
if by rod, slow to fight the fish
if by hand line no slow the boat and yank and crank, which can more than double your catch
limit 25
warm blooded and quick to spoil
blood , blood and blood
and all this only if the seas allow you out of port.
seems kinda "EXTREME"
Where do i sign up?

You're there!

You explained it nicely but explanations fall short of the reality by about a mile.

A very good friend put it this way on his first trip.

'What frightens me about all of this ....'

(Evil blood splattered grin, Knife in hand, Dripping blood through his fingers .... 4 tuna slapping and squirting blood on the deck ... handlines and standup rods tangled in a bloody pile on the deck .... last rod in the holder, bucking and screaming furiously in an ever higher pitch ....)

'is not that we are 35 miles off shore in the fog in a 19 ft boat. What absolutely terrifies me is that I really, really, like it!'

Well said Gary, I concur.

If by your own boat. Probably Westport. If no boat same place except bring dough for an overnighter on a charter boat. Probably cheaper by charter boat.

Once you get bit by tuna fever you will be infected with the most deadly disease known to man (and a few women... Jen). What makes this disease so insidious for Norwesterners is that it is seasonal. It has a quiescent stage known to Norwesteners as cabin fever.

This can be equally dangerous. People have been known to go totally beserk during the winter with cabin fever. They start logging on to ifish and whine about tuna, max out their visa and mastercards on useless fishing gear, (how can you use a Shimano Tiagra TL-80 reel and bent butt all roller rod in the winter? maybe on sturgeon??), spend hours laying out out their boat... (let's see.. a nice custom made kill box on the transom would be nice...), some even try to find a cure by flying to New Zealand or Austrialia instead of a couple of hours in a lightbox.

No don't do it.... Best just go steelheading. Safer and cheaper. Even a twelve year old kid can can catch them with a trout pole.

Bumper_Chrome - Looks like you might have to join TA. Next meeting is Weds the 9th. You might want to start a East. WA chapter, long drive for an hour or two meeting.
:depressed:
Not too long a drive for a "12 hour tour" though !
- Your TA support councilor

Bumper_chrome..... Nah... You don't want to get mixed up with this crowd. They are definitely CRAZY..... with a capital C.... Have you meet Pilar yet???? Now there is a person that is way over the edge. You mention tuna and he gets this glazed over look in his eyes. Like a bank robber on payday. He walks as if he were on a boat for months. Kinda has that permanent lean to one side and rocks back and forth even standing still. People honk at him at the gas station because he thinks he still needs fifty more gallons of fuel. Hand him anything that looks like a fishing pole and it assumes an eleven oclock position like he had a longfin on. Yell FISH ON!!! and he goes into convulsions. They even make you eat a beating tuna heart if you are a newbie.

Nahh... walking down the darkest alley in Tacoma is safer than hanging with these guys.

Sensei-san,,

stop already, I'm on the floor in tears. What a perfect description!

I gotta admit I have tied that Texaco up on the north end of Depoe Bay a few times -- you need how much gas? I think I'm part owner now.

Sensei-san, Great post, LMAO.
One thing though, as far as: "They are definitely CRAZY..... with a capital C" I just want to clarify that "Crazy" is a 28 Albin out of Hammond, and yes he is! The rest of us are just INSANE.

Bumper,

Just say NO. Seriously man. This tuna fever is a killer. I've been away from the board and haven't thought about tuna all weekend... well, almost. Then just as I'm settling in to a nice warm bed, the phone rings and Pilar tells me about the %$*(&#@ Bluefin that UG caught!

Let's not even get started with the fact that I spent a day wandering around Fisherman's with my daughter who kept saying, "come on mom, let's go" and telling her that we couldn't leave yet, they still had some tuna/billfish gear.

Now my daughter loves to tell the story about how I spent $150 at "the fishing store". But she does it with a proud twinkle in her eye - you see, she's a tunaholic, too... and she hasn't even caught one yet.

And, as if that isn't bad enough, I'm now talking about booking a vacation in Mexico!

Oh, man... just don't do it!

Pilar's Mate,

You got out of a tackle store for $150?? That's
*CHEAP*!! Seems like every time I go to Englunds
(down Newport way) to buy tackle, It costs me closer
to $250-300! My other half jokes about me not being
able to even walk in the door for less than a hundred
dollar bill ... although she would have been proud of
me this past weekend when I went in to get the new
raw water impellors and actually got out of the store
for less than a hundred bucks!!

Pardon my moniker, but 35 miles out!!!! In a 19 foot boat you guys are completely nutz.
My old man used to have a 16 smoker craft and we went out past the bar once and that was when it looked like a bath tub!

Bankbound, now you know one of the symptoms of tuna fever. Reality has no bounds for these folks.... Maybe Pilar should do a Ford truck ad......

Assassin,

Well, it would have been more, but I had a moment of lucidity and put a few items back. As it was, the $150 booty was contained in one very small sack. If I owned a B.O.A.T, it would have been a completely different story, I'm sure!

Bankbound - Ah, er, uh... you mean you would have a problem heading out 30-50 miles in a 19ft boat? Uh... Should I have thought twice about that?

Not a chance!

Muaaaaaahhhhaaaa!

Bankbound,
Not completely but I am trying. I fished the edge of the Gulf of Alaska out of 16' Gregor and Lund skifs.

If you watch the weather, have a reliable boat with good a radio and GPS, and other boats running with you it is safer than driving on I-5 in Portland ( that is completely nuts  ).

Jen,
I know for a fact that you've thought much more than "twice" about going out after Bill in a 19' boat.
