Default a salmon question....

I was fishing in Tillamook Bay for salmon on Tuesday; we thought two days after the rain would be enough time for the water to make a difference & hopefully we'd hook up. Well, there were fish, all right, a lot of silvers were even jumping. But no bites. we tried almost everything in the tackle box. Nothing. Later, one guy said that salmon are kinda like little kids, and that when they first get into the bays, they play, e.g., jump a lot, but they're not interested in eating until later, maybe a day or two. As if they're excited (probably not the right word here) about finally getting started on that final journey.....
Is this true, or was he just having some fun at my expense? I hadn't heard this before, and I'm wondering.....

It's my understanding that when the fish first hit
fresh water they jump trying to rid themselves of
sea lice.

Thanks for the reply, Assassin.
Yeah, it seems like I've heard that too. Do you know how long the lice would ive in fresh water? Not that the salmon themselves wuld know, I'm just curious....

Sorry Bud, no clue! I've been fishing Salt so many
years that I've forgotten most of what I once thought
I knew about fresh water fishing!

According to this link, they can live up to 21days in fresh water. http://www.agf.gov.bc.ca/fisheries/health/sea_lice.htm
