Called the Tuna trip off at the CR bouy this Sat. Foggy on the way out, the fog broke and then the wind started. Swell was practically nill, but the chop went from a foot to two in a matter of minutes. We decided to head SW to the shale pile (26 miles) instead of heading out 60 plus miles to try to find the warm water. Satallite shots were all clouded over for 2 days or so and where the warm water really was was a guess at best.
We had a great bottom run though. Limited the boats on mostly Widow's and Vermillions. No real whopper braggin fish, but the average size was right up there. It was a little bumpy, but with the chop on the stern and bumping the boat back to hold against the wind we did just fine. Miss B had one pull with 3 fish big fish on two rods and 4 fish on the 3rd rod. A full limit on one drop
Water was pretty lumpy by the time we quit and headed in. Nothing real ugly, just bumpy enough that we were glad we weren't out another 40 miles though. Sounds like today(Sunday) was real ugly. I heard a commercial talking on the VHF, said he had a kid on board that was crying and saying "I don't want to die, I don't want to die" over and over. He decided to come on in since he was close to the mouth anyway (nice guy - huh!)
The only real issue with the trip was the fact I was short on crew. Sure could have used another rod in the water Pete !
Everybody on both boats went home with sore arms, and lots of good eats so I guess it was a success. It ain't Tuna Fishin, but it's a great break from troll, troll troll your boat. Really nice to do something different. We were the only boats out there too, a really nice break from the salmon crouds earlier.
Thanks to the crew. Hope to do it again this year if the ocean coops. I'm pretty sure the Tuna is over up here for the year. Time to start dreamin about next years runs and go to some Tunaholics meetings over the winter.
