Tuna-holics Anonymous
After waking up today at 5:00 AM and turning on the computer and find that it had blown 15-20 knots all night at Stonewall Banks Buoy, I cursed the wind gods and went down to have breakfast with the dejected tuna gang.
The consensus was that tuna are done for this year. Unless Popeye is serious about doing the roadtrip, longfin fishing is goners.
Eating Starkist from COSTCO instead of home canned tuna is a real downer. I had some new recipes for jalapeno smoked tuna and pesto-olive oil tuna ready to go. Dock bought tuna doesn't taste the same as when you know the exact time that the longfin was beating on the deck as it goes into the jar.
So Pilar, since you were one of the few tuna-holics to actually see a tuna, tuna-holics anonymous will have to hold the meeting in Pilar's boat. It is sacred ground. Pilar can regale us with the legend of Bill the missing rod and tell us of the great one that got away.
When is the first meeting???

the courage to live another day without tuna,

12 Steps To Recovery
1. Put the poles down and slowly back away.
2. Stop hiding lures in various places in the house.
3. Never mistakenly call your spouse "Tuna" during love making.
4. As hard as it is to believe, not everyone enjoys tuna fishing.
5. Selling your car in order to buy more gas to go tuna fishing is not recommended.
6. There are other fish in the sea.
7. Leaving work daily to get home and accept packages from UPS/FedX is wrong.
8. No more telling your spouse the truck broke down while you were out fishing so you'll have to stay another day, or in extreme cases a week.
9. If extreme withdrawls have set in, for instance random "hook setting" while at work or home, or making the zzzzzzzzzzzz sound constantly, do not let the tuna-holic near any fishing articles like magazines, fishing gear, or boats as that will make matters worse.
10. Tuna fishing is not a replacement for eating.
11. Unlike AA, recovery should be made away from other tuna-holics. Gathering tuna-holics together will only create more problems.
12. It is not acceptable to miss your child's birth because you were out tuna fishing.(my wife told me that one)
Meeting adjourned.

Well count your selfs lucky Gentleman!!! I've only dreament of Tuna fishing. Having had the time or the opertunaty to go, or for that fact the knowledge to try.
But I will make the pledge to go next year. When is the best time to go?
Good luck with the Ta meetings.
If that doesn't work look for a couple Pc fishing sem's. That might help

Re: Tuna-holics Anonymous
I get a taste of tuna fishing every other year. That's all I can afford on the meager pay I get. I guess that its better to fish some of the time than to not fish at all. Hopefully next year will be another good albacore year.

Re: Tuna-holics Anonymous
I was wondering why so many of the guys in the diner had camo on. Then I was reminded it was opening day of deer season. I gave up on bambi killing. To easy to get lost in the woods. Can't get lost on the ocean. Just head east and you will hit land eventually.

Hello everyone... My name is Dan, and I too am a tunaholic.
.............confession..........
My illness has prevented me from committing myself in any meanningful relationship. I have yet to find a women who is secure enough to schedule her emotional and physical needs around......bouy reports, SST's, coastal forecasts, and fishing reports from my only true friends at ifish.
I am a tuna intravert (sp?)......

Re: Tuna-holics Anonymous
Hi... my name is Jennifer... and I erroneously confessed to being a tunaholic in a previous post... Yes.. I know... HI JENNIFER!
Thanks all...
Dan... your new wife has not been tuna fishing with you yet??? Oh... BAD!
John, on the other hand, has it made... biology, moon, food, emotional needs, whatever... they're all overcome or satisfied by the zzzzzZZZZZZ when that longfin gets hold of the line. I'm jonesin' bad and REFUSE to believe we are done for the year.
I'm now talking to mom, trying to convince her to join us in ME-HE-CO for Spring break so that I can take the kids and still go fishing in the spring...
Oh, yes, the property taxes are due, one of the kids needs braces, and I'm to my eyeballs in debt, but it's all about the tuna... and BILL of course.
I confess, I've been to Uwajimaya for Marlin twice and enjoying the heck out of eating the stuff.
Okay, so I'm completely hopeless at this point. I gotta have more long-fin in my near future, or I might start looking longingly at those flat packages that Bumble-bee puts in the grocery stores...

Re: Tuna-holics Anonymous
Hi my name is John and I fish way too much ... Break Break Break .....
The hell with this ... I'm going for denial, tried and true. Pass the Patrone, please.
Why are we having this meeting and what am I doing here anyway? My $0.02 is that we had a hell of a year and that next summer even more people will give it a go.
Riverliver ... July to late September. Now you just need to start begging for the right to ride on a proven killer boat. Hint ... start begging now before we all get in the frenzy of bragging, hunting ... carking and canning.
9 out of 10 tuna fishers agree this is pretty damn fun stuff. Who needs Mexico when you can have the blue water fun right here, just 30 miles to the west.
Oh .. back to the meeting .. I went Uwajimaya today and spent a great deal of time looking at the little Ahi Tuna in the fish case. 2 to 3 pounds and prime. They'd look really nice skipping behind my boat at 8 or 9 miles an hour. They would be an absolute beauty with a couple hundred pounds of Billfish wrapped around them. But $30 each was a bit much.... for a hunk of bait. I settled for a couple dozen ex-smalls in the shell and a hunk of Mahi Mahi.
Some people tell me I fish too much ... "fishing is your life!" I hear this often enough for it to concern me to some small degree. Like Wak, I seldom pass the PC without looking in at the North Coast forecast, SST and all the other things.
Yes the war box is loaded with new 200# leader and Zukers with barbless doubles, 20 ft lengths of 130# malin wire and Marlin mackeral jigs, purple Poe's cedar plugs and one in particular (thanks Rod) and of course the occasional Yo Zuri diver or purple haze Rapala.
I dimly remember the other fish like Halibut, Lings or Salmon but only one fish is shiny or fast enough for me. A short boat ride is one in which the gas gauge does not need looked at, less than 20 miles I think.
So maybe I need help after all.....
Where was I?
Uh.. Never mind.
We now return you to the fishing Channel, all fishing- all the time.

Re: Tuna-holics Anonymous
Team Leader Pilar... Please give me the strength to forget such memories as the sight of red decks.
It causes my body to go into convulsions. The sound of zzzzzzzz and the scream of FISH ON!!! causes sudden twitching in my neck and an uncontrolled urge to either pull back on the throttles or turn a circle. The sound of spin cycle and the crew trying to gill a tuna is always hysterics especially if there is a multiple.
Ahh... a ring at the door.... UPS man..... from Englund Marine.... Let's see 200# Jinkai leader and a package of mexican flag tuna clones..... oh.. a bonus 400# tuna cord and a Yozuri diver...
No!!!! say it isn't so... tuna season can't be gone......

I tried to stop the shakes by spanking a mess of coho (9) today but it didn't help.
Nothing like a tuna rush.
I worked on handlines on Thursday and have to score some heavy leader.

Re: Tuna-holics Anonymous
Hi, my name is Lynda. I am a tuna holic in remission. I say remission because it has been years since I have experienced the tuna rush.
I remember fishing with my dad. We got into them.... every line had a fish on. Get the fish in the boat and lines back in the water so we can pass thru the school again. After the 3rd pass thru the school, the boat stopped. The entire crew looked at my dad glaring, confused, "Why are we stopping? Aren't we going to go thru the school again?". His reply, in his deep bark that no one ever questioned, "We need to get these fish off the deck before someone breaks a leg."
Oh, the memories.... It was the picture with all the blood on the deck that gave me the flashback. Sigh....

Re: Tuna-holics Anonymous
I have hesitated to get involved with this group, because I can see it is going to be even more addicting than the steelhead/chinook/silver additiction I already have. But with that said, DBL Gaynor is ready for action, thanks in a very large part to Pilar ( with his boat mechanic hat on).
She runs perfect John. The gas tank is full, the tuna cords are tied (I think that's what Krystalflash told me), and we are ready to go. I knew the way things went this year, we would be out of the loop for tuna, but next year we will be there.
Thanks again John for helping us pull the motor, the outdrive, the rewireing, and general up grade we were able to do with everyting out of the way. We were able to get inside and redo, replace, and upgrade almost all aspects of the boat to better than new standards (I guess with Bayliner that isn't saying a whole lot!!!) But the engine in sound, the outdrive solid, and with the removal of the gas tank, we re-plummed the bilge all the way through the boat. 24' Trophy, 350 V8, 96 gallon tank, plus radar. We are ready. Just call the shots

Re: Tuna-holics Anonymous
NO!!!
Here I am looking for a new boat, one that will get me out to Tuna Town so I can experience first-hand what I've only read about - the sights, sounds and melee of a school of bullets running amok behind the boat, and then Sensei-san has to post that picture of his pillaged boat, painted in blood, with gore running out of the scuppers (does that boat have scuppers?)
Anyway, my wife, reading over my shoulder said, "you want us to get a brand new boat and do THAT to it? You, who ask fellow fishers not to bring a salmon aboard until it's been bonked, because you don't want scales and slime sprayed everywhere? You? You mean you're willing to stand knee-deep in blood with an insane grin like that on your face and pretend your boat will ever be clean again?"
I'll tell ya, folks, that almost sobered me as I looked in her eyes and thought about the ramifications of tuna-dependency. I paused for a long time - maybe 30-40 seconds - before my trembling hand picked up the phone. "Please, honey, just get me Edwing's phone number. I can't stop myself ! I've got to do this."
Skein - who has fallen in with a bad crowd.

Re: Tuna-holics Anonymous
All the tuna fishing I've done in the past years, I have really enjoyed. This year I took a break (leave of absent would be correct) and went fishing on A commercial boat. This is a boat that is spotless with yacht interior, complete with washer/dryer. The first trip I went on was for 30 days, living on the ocean was fantastic. Learned some new things. I guess the bottom line here is that - I am a tunaholic!.............Bobber Down

Re: Tuna-holics Anonymous
So guys - I think my daughter may have come up with a way we can fish Tuna even when the water is bad. I just have to figure out how long the handlines would have to be in order to fish from a helicopter!
Wak - Nope, no sisters. I'm sandwiched between 2 bothers - any wonder I turned out the way I did?
Sen - Insane photo! If we had a photo contest, that would take my vote for sure! I can't hardly sit still! I've got the shakes so bad.
RJ - Love those photos
Rod - You are too funny! How does your wife stand it? She must be in stitches all the time.
Skein - I don't know what to say, except I'm sorry. Didn't we warn you? Tell your wife that if you get an EdWing, there's nothing a garden hose won't restore right back to original. You've seen the "Puffin", yes?
Deep - I can sympathize with what you're going through.
Lynda - Thanks for having the courage to share! Ahhhh - how I remember the ring of the words "we have to stop fishing - there's no more room for fish" - the glory of flying our flag proudly and gliding through the keyhole at depoe bay with the music bouncing around under the bridge... decks awash with the blood of victory and the town a-buzz with the news of the first tuna of the season. AAARRRRGGGG! I can't hardly stand it!
John, Ray? Hey... 3 & 4 on Wednesday? SST looks like it might hold some promising news.

Well, there ya go! You were looking for a boat anyway, Lee. What's a cool half-million?!
Let's see, re-rig the torpedo tubes with harpoons, strip out the staff room, install large coolers - yeah.
Oh and we could add some windows so that we can count groundfish and kill 2 birds, er, fish with one stone, er, harpoon? Yeah, that's it!

Jen/Keta - jee wiz you guys are picky. Here- it's not a Nuke but it should hold plenty of crew and Tuna. 4600 HP, 15,000 mile range. It has "tuna tubes" too! (I think the 56 is a typo). The cruise missles should work wonders in T-bay when you can't find a parking place.  Only 500 boat bucks too!

Re: Tuna-holics Anonymous
Ok, you guys and gals are just killing me. I have tried to keep my mouth shut but I just can't do it anymore!! I live my lack of fishing life vicariously though you salty dogs and your adventures.
I have been sitting here for a year and a half making a few posts and learning a lot.
Got the fiance (who is supportive and wants to go too) to agree to buying a "Whopper Whipper" with all the bells and whistles. Need to chase down some plugs/feathers/tuna cord/etc/etc. too.
So my biggest question is, who's feet do I have to beg at to score a tuna trip for next year? I'll clean the bilge if need be. Should I just sign up for TunaAholics right now just to make sure I have a membership established so you all can comfort me in my times of need?
Ok, I have to go, my boss is going to kill me if he catches me on here again!!! He just doesn't understand the need.
Paul B.

Re: Tuna-holics Anonymous
What do you get the man who has everything for Christmas?
A SUBMARINE OF COURSE! Shop early to beat the rush!
This craft is powered by 2 X 2000 HP diesels or 2 X 1400 HP electric engines.
This unique craft when converted would make an extraordinary Tuna Boat!

Re: Tuna-holics Anonymous
Hi Paul. Yes, you want to join TA right now. The good news is that you're just down the street. Good for support and all. Forget the house, forget the fancy wedding, forget the honeymoon - well, okay, take her on the honeymoon someplace that will get her addicted to tuna fishing - then you can get the boat and worry about the house later.
Mel - don't even get me started about parking in T-bay. And darn it all, wouldn't you know it! I've already secured Pilar's B-day AND Christmas presents. Oh well, maybe next year

Down the street Huh? I think we need a Roll Call for Hillsboro TA soon. How about Weds eve. It's date night for us and you could meet "the Captain" (and her stable boy). Just don't call her Tuni.

Wednesdays are a little tough for me - that's when I'm normally at the gym, training for when I hook up with "Bill" But since we haven't started Billaholics meetings - YET - I could probably take a Wednesday off for a Hillsboro meeting. Maybe we can bring handlines, Po's & such and do simulated tuna hook-ups

Keta - Only if he's crazy enough to take me on a Florida/Canal/Oregon boat trip with him . How long will you be in the area? I'll be fishing something either in or out of the CR the next weekend.
All I-fishers are welcome of course. It's just the meeting local that's Hillsboro area.

Popeye, I've got it!!!!!!
You can trade the Julie Rose for the sub even up. Just think....an endless summer!
What better place to store "torpedos" than in the torpedo tubes!! Get back to the marina and just shoot them up to the cleaning station!
No worries about the handline....just tie it off the periscope!

Re: Tuna-holics Anonymous
Welcome Bankbound! You must feel a little like I did when I accompanied a friend to an AA meeting for support... Only difference is that I didn't go so that I could become an alcoholic. This thread should come with a warning: "reading this post could lead to serious tunaddiction" Okay, so you've been warned.
Baitboy, I still love that photo! It is a total oxymoron. We've got your innocent-looking face covered with blood and the most satisfied smile. All of this could only be read by an outsider to mean that you're a total mad-man!
Mel: Nice try, but that sub's too small. two man sub? Where would we put the carking station? The 500lbs of ice? Ooooh, but think of the bloody mess we could make. After all, I think those tuna bleed a bit, don't they? Baitboy? Didn't you say they bleed a little?
I wonder what the towing capacity of the Odyssea is, though.

Re: Tuna-holics Anonymous
Dunno what Pilar's up to next week. He was up to his eyeballs in alligators yesterday, so I haven't chatted with him about the Roll Call. I'm sure he'll want to join... whether or not his schedule will permit... ???
What time were you thinking?

Re: Tuna-holics Anonymous
Hello, I am Tom, and I am a tuna addict.
That pic that sensei-san put up says it all.
Did anyone happen to watch ESPN last night?? They were out spanking the heck out of albicore and yellow tail.
Last Friday, my buddy put together a tuna trip out of Newport, and his brother bailed out on him, so I had a free seat on the last tuna trip of the season for me. We headed out to tuna town, and found 56deg water, with an 8 ft swell at 8 seconds. We trolled around for 4 hours, and reset acouple of times, with no action at all.
After another reset, about 12 noon, I had my best carma going, and just knew that my pole was going to be the one that goes off.
We only got one bite, and it was on MY POLE!!  I grabbed the rod, and the penn reel was SCREAMING!!!! I was just rushing with adrenaline as the 30lber was peeling line. The skipper turned the boat, and after a couple of heart trobbing minutes, we gaffed the longfin.
It was such a great sight to see, as the deck hand cut the gills , and the red started to cover the deck. By my calculations, that fish cost my buddy $1,200.00. (8 times $150.00)
He took some pictures, and as soon I get one, I will post it.
I was dreaming all night last night, of fighting that fish, and can't wait to hook into another.
Does anyone know an easy way to learn spanish? I just gotta get a hook into some more TUNA!!!!
Jen, I need a meeting BAD!!!
Peace, Tom

Re: Tuna-holics Anonymous
Okay Tom. Breathe in. Breathe out. It's going to be okay. Really. Focus on obtaining a set of spanish language tapes. Make sure it is English to Spanish. Put on headphones and play them at night when you go to bed. Maybe that will help with the screaming reels and sweats in the middle of the night.
Watch for Miss B Haven to post a message Monday about the Tunaholics Anonymous meeting tentatively scheduled for Wed. 10/9.
Looks like it will be 6pm at Juan Colorado's on 10th & TV hwy in Hillsboro.
Pilar: Looks like you're going to have to set up that non-profit organization after all. We're going to be busy ministering to these poor lost souls for the next several months.

Re: Tuna-holics Anonymous
If any of you have an open seat next year , please let me know. I’ll say right up front I know nothing about tuna fishing but I can follow orders, I don’t complain, and I got no problems chipping in for fuel and bait.
So remember, for next year, there is one more that would like join this club. Thanks.

Re: Tuna-holics Anonymous
Waterdog, it's pretty easy really. It's all about adrenaline and blood. My boat has a pretty limited seating capacity but I love taking newbies to Tuna Town. I'll pencil you in.
First I have to take care of my old friend Ray. Mr. F, you might find yourself waking up in a gunny sack under the bow. Seeins as I might have to kidnap your butt to get past the minefield in the drive, the attack dogs and the rolling pin. You will be a Tuna fisher if I have anything to say about it.
Hey Jen, what about this lost soul? Don't you want at least a little credit for contributing to the delinquincy of a sailor?

Uh, yeah, sure... any time my seat is empty, you're welcome to take other crew aboard
Hey, c'mon now, it HAS been known to happen
Rolling pin? Hmmm... With that crack, I might have to think twice about that pie I was thinking of baking.
Hehehe!

Pilar, I know you have obligations to others. Thanks for the offer. Can't wait till next year. And I aint above being a stow-away if need be! Dang, I bet that rolling pin could really hurt.
I just want it known to all the tuna-holics that if there is an open seat for a newbie I'd like to be the FB that fills it.

Re: Tuna-holics Anonymous
Waterdog - send me an e-mail and I'll add you to my list for next season as well. . I'm sure you'll figure out how to get them in the boat real quick. That's the only thing the crew really has to do (sounds horrible doesn't it). I don't have the Tuna experiance that some of these guys have, but there's only one way to fix that isn't there. Speaking of fixes, lets see... only 9 shopping months to go until next Tuna Season. :depressed:
