Re: ROAD TRIP!
Miss B, you say your Tolly gets 2 nmpg with a 300 gallon tank? That's a range of 500 nm. with a reserve at 9 knots. I'll do the first watch. When are we leaving? Got to have a laptop and Direct TV so we can download terrafin on the way. Ah hell... we'll just run west a few miles to be in the water all the way down.

Re: ROAD TRIP!
Somebody tell me if this formula is correct ... for
some reason it doesn't seem so to me. What am I missing?
Fuel capacity (fc) divided by gph times speed ...
(fc/gph)knots = miles traveled.
If I figure my milage this way, I get:
(280/6.5)24knots = 1034 miles with no reserve
BUT:
if I figure my milage this way:
(280/3.5)10knots = 800 miles with no reserve.
Assuming that my fuel usage is correct (gph) then
it seems to me that my boat gets better milage (mpg)
at 24 knots than it does at 10 knots.
OK, have at my formula and let me know what I've got
wrong here. It's just SO counter intuitive that my
boat would have better range at cruise speed then at
a speed less than half cruise speed!
Thanks,
-assAssin-

Re: ROAD TRIP!
Nothing wrong with your figuring, but you are correct, if you fuel flow calcs are right, you get better mileage at 24kts than at 10. Not surprising. 10 is probably 3kts above hull speed. Try 7kts, I bet your fuel consumption goes way down. Required horsepower is exponential above hull speed until you begin to lift your hull out of the water (planing).
At speed, you lift the boat out of the water, reducing drag, increasing efficiency. I know I do WAY better on fuel at 24 than at 10 in my Olympic. I get about 1.5mpg at 24 and only about 1mpg at 10.

Re: ROAD TRIP!
How did we get from dreaming about a mythical tuna trip to reality???? It is like getting cold water splashed down your pants. Your formual is correct but the relevant factor is the fuel effiency numbers that you are using. The 6.5 gph and 3.5 gph figures vs. your speed. I seriously doubt that your boat is getting 6.5 gph at 24 mph. If you plug in more realistic numbers like 10 or 12 gallons per hour, your consumption figures would make sense. If you are getting these figures from a floscan system, then it tells you that 10 knots is the transition speed from displacement speed to planing speed. As every boater knows that is the most inefficient speed to run a boat at. Plus you look dopey with the boat halfway out of the water wallowing like a beached whale on the swells.

Re: ROAD TRIP!
Sensei and Fishassassin - Are you kidiing. I just made all that stuff up. I can't even count how many times "tie-master" was on a dang web page and you think I can compute my fuel consumption, time to waypoint and how many beer stops I get to take? Seriously, don't really know I never get to just do a steady state run and then fill back up, 'bout 1 nmpg at cruise from what I figure. Should get double that at least at close to hull speed, maybe 3x at 6-7 knots.
I really need to get my dang flowscans installed. The ONLY way to go! Problem is those fish keep bothering me. Install, fish... Install, fish.... Install, fish.... see what I mean

Re: ROAD TRIP!
Miss B let's get back to more fun stuff. Got the ice loaded or do you have an ice machine on the boat? If we just pack the fish in ice the first day we can save on the ice. The first day we should drift at night. Maybe we can get back a few of the missing rods that Mr. Bill took and catch some giant squid under the lights. The second day we'll put the fish in the hold and slush them. We could make Ft. Bragg easily. The latest terrafin shows good water all the way down about 50-100 miles offshore. The Pt. Arena bouy has been flat the last few days so we could go ab diving in some of the coves on the way past Sonoma County. I'm packed. How many rods???

Re: ROAD TRIP!
I did a 10 day trip once on a 42' Sea Chief Trawler from SF down to the Channel Islands for lobster and spearfishing. Awesome trip. Absolutely incredible. Tuna trolling the whole way down and back, and 5 days of freediving for lobster and spearfishing.
Hard to get my landlegs back after that trip.

Lots of older boats for fair prices. When the cash gets here I will know what I can get. I have $3500 now and can pick up some real fixer upers but I would rather get one in the $8,000-$10,000 range.

Re: ROAD TRIP!
Best bet for storing fish is to bring the canner and plenty of jars! Who wants 10 or 14 day old tuna? Not me. On a big trip like this one, ice is a problem. Anyone got an icemaker?
You can buy 400 pounds every couple days for 20-30 bucks in most fishing harbors, but who wants to head into shore for ice?
Real block ice is the best way to go, but that's still only about 5 days in a very good cooler.
Best bet is to can them as you catch them and eat all you stuff down.

Abs in Sonoma. It's almost time for my annual pilgramage to the SF bay area for Crabalone. Crabbing and abbing on the sonoma coast. The crabbing up here is way better, but abs as a bonus make it a great weekend.

Re: ROAD TRIP!
Let's see... If we get one of those rubber inflatable fuel bags like they haul down the freeway on semis, we could tow it behind threemuch with a short haul on the towline. That way it wouldn't interfere with fishing. When the motor coughs, we could pull the fuel bag in and refuel. I bet they make one about 200 gallons. That way we could save room on threemuch for fish and food. I'll only bring one duffel bag of clothes. Besides we will be in 62 degree water so we can take baths by jumping in. Let's go.....

Re: ROAD TRIP!
How about a commercial permit for Albi's. Stop in port, sell the fish to pay for fuel. Save the dang ice for more important things (beer, toddies). Need a good crew but volunteers shouldn't be a problem (Sensei-san's ready. )
Oh ya - just one more thing. I need a clone to stay behind, bring home the bacon, wire cash to ports of call and cover the honeydo's. Any volunteers for that?

Re: ROAD TRIP!
Threemuch,
You're right ... planning speed is 13 knots, so I
probably get better milage at that than at 10 knots. *That's* got to be the difference.
Sensei-san:
The gph figures are comming from average speed over
a period between fill-ups. The 6.5 gph comes from
back to back tuna trips ... running 40 miles at about 28-30 knots in and out and then trolling at
between 6-7 knots for six hours a day.
Maybe this winter while I'm having the hull repair
re-painted, the sump pump for the shower replaced and
the shore power converter installed I'll get flow
scans for both engines put in, too! I guess all it
takes is money!
*Then* I should be ready to make the trip to Southern
Cal. with you guys!!

Re: ROAD TRIP!
Ok Fish assasin... I give.... I guess I have to get serious..... From the fuel figures I guess this is a gas boat. If it is a gas boat without a fuel return line like some of the newer outboards, you can get a cheapie fuel guage from Consumers Marine Electronics for 150 per engine. then you can do serious calculations like threemuch is doing. It is the NAVMAN fuel guage and is identical to the Standard Horizon one that has been on the market for years. Easy to install just put the meter in the fuel line and cut a hole in your dash. Obviously pull wire from meter to guage. Now I got cold water in my pants. I guess I will have to change and take a shower.....Damn the lawn needs mowing.....

Re: ROAD TRIP!
Sensei - Nope he's got twin diesels. It cost me 1 and 1/2 boat bucks for my flow scans. Had to get temp comp too. 3116's use the return fuel as injector pump cooling. Changes the density of the return fuel. Now I just need winter to come so I can install them (What am I saying - Nooooooo....... not winter!!).

Re: ROAD TRIP!
Damn... This is like waking up from a wetdream. Nothing looks like what was so much fun..... fish assassin better not see me around the docks..... If you get an inverter the only one to get is the Heart with a battery charger. The others even though they say they put out a sine wave are overkill. What do you need an industrial clean room inverter for on a boat? The most you will ever use it for is a refer or freezer, microwave and power for a cell phone charger. They tolerate the MSW that a Heart puts out. So do drills saws etc. Also get rid of your batteries. Replace them with the golf cart 6 volt batteries. Last longer work better and will survive a night on the ocean without draining down.
I'm going to get Miss B too.... Rich called me last night and said that the parts to convert the old cummins floscans to CAT floscans just arrived. He ordered the GPS interface 9000 series ones and wants them to interface with the autopilot and chartplotter. I just love smelly ol diesel fuel dripping down my overalls. You guys why can't I go on dreaming about chasing albies down the coast.....

Re: ROAD TRIP!
Hey Mel: make yourself a graph or get one from engine mfg showing horsepower output at a given rpm. Diesels use .5 gals per 10 hp made. Make another graph of kts per rpm overlay the two and you have a real close fuel usage chart.Mine was realy accurate on a 1000 mile trip last year...Roger

Re: ROAD TRIP!
Thanks Roger but I think I'll just get my flow scans installed (already paid for). Unless some wonderful miracle happens and winter never comes, they should be in by Dec.
I noticed R&R was still in the slip last Sunday but didn't see you around. are you going to be down this weekend ?

Use to dive some, just keep the old mask handy for such things as rope removal can still hold my breath long enough to look under boats rear end after that it becomes work...catch you on the water....Roger

That's why I always have my wetsuit, fins, and mask in the boat. Plus if I ever sink, I can swim for shore and actually make it.

Re: ROAD TRIP!
Hey Threemuch, Just called Spud Point Marina. Got the last guest slip for this weekend. Booked it for a week. I think we should just trailer her down to Bodega Bay. Easier that way. There was a shot of warm water in the Canyon last week. I have a Zodiac inflatable with a five horse OB. 46014 has been FLAT for the last few days. Got a couple of spearguns. Let's see crab-a-caba-lone.... Not sure about the caba could be closed down there. (Just teasing)

Re: ROAD TRIP!
Hey, Popeye... Let's see.... Newport to Crescent City, Crescent City to Ft. Bragg, Ft. Bragg to Bodega Bay, Bodega Bay to Monterey Bay, Monterey Bay to Morro Bay, Morro Bay to Santa Barbara, Santa Barbara to Newport Beach (have to stop there), Newport Beach to San Diego. Only take a week to get there. I'll do the Norcal run. Already know those waters. I have a friend in Santa Cruz that can do the Midcal waters. Will need to buy the chart chip for San Diego. What brand does your chartplotter use? C-Map or Navionics?

Re: ROAD TRIP!
Hmmm.. 300 gallons in the tank, an easy 9 knots downhill, what is it 1500nm?, 2 nmpg, call it 160 hrs, a couple of weeks and 5 fuel stops (fishing all the way of course)....... does have possibilities.
