Re: Jet Boat races.....amazing, crazy, or just plain STUPID? You be the judge
The first vid is of sprint boats.
They use to run them in Woodland for a couple years, but got shut down.
They still run them in eastern Washington somewheres.Kennewick maybe.I think they still run them in Marcine Idaho too.
The wife and I were involved in the Woodland races and it was a blast. Her brother still has his boat.
The top end boats are about 12-13 feet long, way about 1200 lbs.Put out 750hp and go from 0-70 in 2.3 seconds.
Those courses are only a couple feet deep on average.
Of the many wrecks Ive seen I only know of 1 gal that got hurt.Had to get a few stitches on her leg.Her and her husband were retired and this was there hobby.
You can get more info at www.ussba.org
The sport originated in Australia and New Zealand on open course with bouys marking the course.

They are thinking of putting a course up in the Tangent area just south of Albany. Sure hope that they do!

Used to run them in Richland the sport never caught on despite pretty good crowds and the world champion from Richland.

Navigating in a race boat is an experience. You just dont sit there and hold on. You are busy in that boat. You have to watch all the guages, rpms, oil pressure, water temp, water pressure, pump intake pressure stop watch and the GPS. Then you have to watch the river to make sure the driver is in the right places on the river. You have to watch for other boats that may have broke or crashed. If you come across another boat that is stopped you have to look for the crew to see if they need assistance. Try doing all that while hurtling up a river at 85 MPH....... I love it.
Amazing? Yes. Crazy? Just a little bit. STUPID???? No way!!!

I used to have a customer from Lewiston who raced a custom Weldcraft hull in white water. One day on the Salmon River his big block Chevy pitched a rod through the block and tore the fuel line open. It caught fire and the whole boat turned into a huge lump of melted aluminum. Bummer.

Good Day Oregon will be covering the races with a pre event morning TV special on Friday morning.
Joe V, "Joe on the Go" will be riding first hand, giving a play-by-play sharing what it feels like to go 60 plus MPH while racing through a narrow and curvey drainage ditch.
Wish I was arround to go watch the races Saturday.
