Default Salmon out of Depoe Bay ...

Hi Everybody,

Just a quick note to let you all know the status of
Salmon Fishing out of Depoe Bay. There are a *ton*
of Feeder Chinook (8-20 lbs.) out at the 40-to-50
fathom line due west of the outside bouy and South
to Cape FoulWeather. There are bigger fish up North
at the mouth of the Salmon river in about 20 fathoms
of water, but not near as many. Hot Spot flashers
with a Purple Haze hoochie and a chunkie seem to be
the best bait, with whole baits (purple label) being
a close second.

The Six Pack Charters out of Tradewinds have been limiting
out thier customers on three hour trips! As a point
of interest, many of the salmon boats from Dopey Bay
and Newport run on channel 13 (CB) and you can get a
lot of good info by just listening to 'em!

Good luck to all the Salmon fisher-persons here ...
oh yeah, and good luck to the Tuna guys too! Hope you
guys can find warm water and lots of tuna!!

AssAssin

I also have heard straight out of Newport 4 to 6 miles they are limiting also. Don't get me wrong because I really love salmon, but my soul needs a tuna fix really bad. I never would have believed that the weather could SUCK this bad for this long at this time of the year. Its almost looking like we will be LUCKY to get another tuna day. If this happens I will need multiple sessions with my counseler Mr. Cuervo or I will be a very hard person to live with this winter.

I had hopes of fishin with you on the outside this year, but maybe next year I will hire on as a deckhand on your boat for a trip or two.

Thanks for the report......

Hey Marty,

Yeah, what a stinko year for tuna!! Between the
ugly weather, the ugly green water, the ugly ocean
conditions and fish that wouldn't bite, this has been
my worst tuna season for many years. Hopefully next
season will be better!

Weekend before last I made my last tuna trip for the
season. A buddy of mine (Andy on the "Mi Joy" located
on dock three in your old place) stayed inshore and
fished Salmon. He caught 24 chinook. I was bummed!
I spent all that time (like 12 hrs.) out on the ocean
looking for Mr. Longfin and only came back with ONE
fish!

I guess I've just become jaded to the tuna thing over
the years. After about a month and a half or two
months of running 20, 30, 40, 50 miles each way every
day I get tired of fishing for tuna. It's not so bad
on the years where there are plentiful fish within
20 miles (like last year), but on a year like this
one ... I'm ready to go back to the easy life of
chinook fishing. If the Salmon fishing is slow I can
sit in the wheel house and read a good book while I'm
trolling around. If the salmon fishing is hot ...
well, it just don't get no better, YaKnowWhatIMean?

Fish Assassin,
Thanks for the update. Sorry to hear about the tuna fishing. My buddy and I are thinking about making one last trip out in big blue this weekend and I was hoping you could give me some advice. When we went out of Depoe a few weeks back, we caught salmon due west running downriggers at about 45 feet down with blue herring. Do you happen to know how deep the charters are catching them? Thanks for any advice.

Both the charter boats and the commercial boats have
been catching all thier chinook in the top 120 feet
of water, however, I noticed last weekend (Sunday)
that the bigger fish were down about 30-35 fathoms
(180-210 feet).

Hope this helps! Good luck out there!
