new to the board...
Hello to all! I've been reading the Salty Dog's conversations for a while now and really enjoy it. I've fished for trout for years, but just started fishing for bigger fish a couple years ago. And after reading about tuna fishing, well, I think I have to try that before I die!
It sounds like fun!

Re: new to the board...
Welcome to Saltydogs! I must warn you about Albacore...I went once this year and my life is NOT the same! They are evil addictive fish. I now spend every waking hour thinking, dreaming, planning for more....I am angry with the sea gods that have prevented me from going out again but am thinking or quiting my job to be available more days! You will love this fishery and this board...again, wlecome!

Welcome aboard! I agree totally with what Sturgn and WP said! Tuna fishing wrecks you for anything else. Except the other thing that Sturgn is talking about. I have known Sturgn for years and the other thing is not for publication on this board.   Right John?

Re: new to the board...
Well, thanks everybody! Sounds like tuna fishing ruins lives, which means without a doubt I have to try it!!!
I unfortunately don't own a boat - I'm trying like crazy to find one (and the $$$ to pay for it with), but I do have some friends that take me out on the water.
A fishing story.... Well, I went out for sturgeon earlier this year up by 'the Fishery' for the first time. I'd heard they were fun to catch. I had only caught two shakers and was getting kinda depressed because everybody else had a keeper. I got my wish - my buddies had told me that when setting the hook to try to "rip their lips off", so I did, and this fish took that personal. Scared the Hades out of me - I didn't have any idea what I was into. My friend was laughing at me - I'm yelling about the fish going under the boat (who says the bend is your friend..?) they're laughing at the look of panic on my face.... It ended up being 59 1/2" - certinally not the biggest fish to ever come out of the river, but the biggest fish I've ever caught. Maybe you had to be there..... I have a picture but can't figure how to get it onto here... can someone tell me?
Some other stuff.... I work for the State, for the OYA (Oregon Youth Authority) as a Training Specialist. I travel a bit, so if I'm not around for a few days, that's why.
Take care all...

Re: new to the board...
Lovestafish,
Welcome! Hi, my name is Jennifer, and I'm a tunaholic!
Oh... I'm sorry... I thought this was the Tunanon meeting.
Seriously, these guys are straight up when they say that tuna fishing will ruin your life! I never in my wildest dreams thought I'd be in the sad state that I am in. I refuse to believe Pilar when he says we're probably done for the season. I'm trying to figure out how to board my kids on a moments notice so that I can quit my job... er, I mean, take a day off and fly to the coast on the off chance we might get out again. I even went without Pilar the last time out because he was in Canada and I was so desperate for a tuna fix... between that and my obsession with "Bill"... My life will never be the same.
Stay away from the tuna, man... trust me!

Welcome aboard lovestafish.
Those 59 1\2 in sturg give a good pull don't they???
I'm not quite as salty as some on here. I've yet to do the tuna thing but I know it will happen next year. I'm looking to replace my stead with a new one or just add another with longer legs. We'll get there some how!!

And everybody said "Hi Jenniffer..."
You all are beginning to scare me. I thought tuna fishing would be fun, but I have this vision of rack & ruin, of having nothing left but tattered clothes & a tuna rod!
Yeah Fishplay, they do tug a bit. I never did get a chance at an oversized fish this year - plans fell thru. Anybody catch an oversized sturgeon?

Re: new to the board...
Welcome aboard, Lovestafish, I'm new myself.
Yeah, I've done quite a bit of the oversize sturgeon fishing. I only got out once for them this year, but we put a few next to the boat! I wish I had done more this summer, it's one of my favorite types of fishing in Oregon. There's nothing like hooking up with one of those mosters and having him tail walk 50 yards behind the boat! It's the closest thing to marlin you'll find around here, that's for sure!

Re: new to the board...
Oh ya, oversized is gooooooooood fun! First time ever sturgeon fishing, we released a 7' and a 9'er - When the big one was on, the fish was deep, straight down. All of a suddent the line goes slack and we thought it was gone, BUT NO !!!!!! that pre-historic monster jumped so close to the boat he (or she, not sure how to do the identity check on a 9 foot beast  ) smacked the boat with his head - THUD! Scared the bajeeeeesus out of us.....
I am looking forward to more of that. It would be nice to ba able to take a keeper home though......

Re: new to the board...
This is crazy I just spent my lunch out at Hayden Island the the SeaSwirl dealer!!!!! Just pokin around, not buying (yet). That 26' twin outboard with a full cabin would do the job nicely...... This behavior was a direct result of this board
Count me in on those meetings, and I have only been out there for tuna once (and it hurt!! ) !!!!!!!

Re: new to the board...
See PeterMac.... next you will have swivelneckitis...... You will be able identify every boat that rolls down the freeway and its destination.... Let's see I-405 westbound... Heavier gear with mooch weights... Must be Bouy 10 fishing..... Then you will be able to know who drives it and exactly where they are going. Hey, Pilar how many tuna did you get? When is the BBQ? Sell the computer right now. Lock the credit cards and take away the keys to the car in case it gets traded in for a powerstroke or cummins diesel. But hon...diesel pickups get really good mileage. Plus you are safer because you can see further down the road.

Re: new to the board...
My name is Rod and I'm a tunaholic...
Join me in the Serenity Prayer:
God grant me the serenity to accept the fact I cannot go out for tuna again this year,
the courage to live another day without tuna,
and the wisdom to know they will come again.
12 Steps To Recovery
1. Put the poles down and slowly back away.
2. Stop hiding lures in various places in the house.
3. Never mistakenly call your spouse "Tuna" during love making.
4. As hard as it is to believe, not everyone enjoys tuna fishing.
5. Selling your car in order to buy more gas to go tuna fishing is not recommended.
6. There are other fish in the sea.
7. Leaving work daily to get home and accept packages from UPS/FedX is wrong.
8. No more telling your spouse the truck broke down while you were out fishing so you'll have to stay another day, or in extreme cases a week.
9. If extreme withdrawls have set in, for instance random "hook setting" while at work or home, or making the zzzzzzzzzzzz sound constantly, do not let the tuna-holic near any fishing articles like magazines, fishing gear, or boats as that will make matters worse.
10. Tuna fishing is not a replacement for eating.
11. Unlike AA, recovery should be made away from other tuna-holics. Gathering tuna-holics together will only create more problems.
12. It is not acceptable to miss your child's birth because you were out tuna fishing.(my wife told me that one)
Meeting adjourned.

<font size="2" face="verdana, arial, helv">Corrirod - I just got my dang ribs fixed from Jennies Blonde Liscense plate and now you had to go and do this. Number 3 is really tuff- my wifes name is Toni. Is calling her "Tuni" during intimate moments OK?
I'm not sure it matters because I've used #8 so many times this year, I don't think there's ever going to be another intimate moment (at least not that includes ME  ).
Finally - #11 - Would that be a Tunaholic "School" ???
Oh man - I gotta go get my ribs and jaws wired up again

Only one modification to corrirod's twelve step program.
3. Never scream "FISH ON!!!" while being intimate with your spouse. Other expressions of endearment such as "COLOR!!!" "TUNA!!!" or "HOOK-UP!!!" also also forbidden.

Re: new to the board...
When does the first meeting of tuna anonymous meet? I am beginning to suffer from severe withdrawl pains. My all roller rods are getting too clean from the daily polishing and the Shimano TLD-30 two speeds are so greased that the fish might slide off instead of get reeled in. The Boaters World catalog is so worn by the throne that I might have to order a new one. Especially the page with the Tiagra long range specials and the new International VSW reels. My credit cards are all maxed out from ordering gear. I am on a first name basis with the UPS and FEDEX drivers. I spend hours on ifish shooting the bull with pilar and popeye. My doctor says there is no cure.... Jennifer.... you better call the meeting to order.....
Lovestafish see the misery that you will face in the winter if you get addicted to that demon fish albacore????

Miss B... Too dangerous.... One terminal addiction is enough..... Would have to declare bankruptcy or worse yet lose half of everything..... A friend went though the same thing. He had to start all over with one fishing rod that he he had hidden at a friends house. Let's see here's a three week package to NZ and AUS.... Nah......
