Less than a 60 mile run from Coos, and a bit more from Newport...it's doable NOW.

Things are starting to look up for the coming Season and I hope that the Myrtlr Bee stacks the dock with tuna.

FWIW; I also look at the time of these shots and consider the weather conditions and time of day for the shot. If it has been clear and sunny for the area and the shot is late in the day you could possibly add 2 deg and sometimes more for day time warming to the shot. The late night/early morning shots are better for more accurate assessments of the Highway IMHO.

I know I'm way overdue for eye exam, but the 6/18 shot of central OR shows warm water at the Banana AND a lot of warm water W. Hopefully the MB will have positive news to verify.

I agree that we will have our lines wet singing near the 4th. I would like to see a snapshot in the mourning to really indicate what is truly out there. I know we are all just jones'n to get out there!

Need Chlorophyl to match it though. That has not happened yet. Soon, very soon. My guess is Tuna Time will head out sometime next week and find fish out of GB.

You can see the "finger" is taking shape...headed right for the north coast!

Look for Tuna Time on Tuesday...if the warm water continues to push in the next few days.

Mark Mc...where is that surface current chart that shows, well, surface currents?

Bud, I think what is shown is a composite from Sunday until today. I'll see if I can extrapolate to get some sort of a trend.

Here's the 12th-16th. I can't see where it will allow isolating specific dates.

June 14th-18th

And the most current (pun intended)

These all look to be the same image. I tried.

Have you guys tried the Coastwatch browser? You select the data it displays, SST, clorophyll, currents, wind, upwelling, and a combination of them. You can select specific days. Takes some playing with to figure out, but seems pretty useful.

Wrap your brain around this.....

The surface current charts are mostly an indicator of the California current, which is always in place, going from the north towards the south, off our coast. It is on the east side of the circular, north pacific current, that spins clockwise because of the earth's rotation (Coriolis effect).

There is an equatorial current that goes from west to east, and tries to spread away from the equator.

If you fill a bathtub with water, and move / push water with your hand one direction, water has to come from somewhere else to fill in the void. (by the way, Archimedes, the father of modern hydraulics, made some of his physics / fluidics discoveries via the bathtub).

So you have this cold water moving south & off the continental shelf, and you have warm water from the south & west trying to move in & displace it. When you see those really cool terrafin / coastwatch shots of a big "pinwheel".... it is an eddy, just like in a river; but in this case caused by the two bodies of water colliding / mixing. That's why the temp break can be so extreme on those pinwheels.

I hope that helps. Go take a bath; bring duckies & experiment.

They all look different to me, with definite improvement over each picture. That last one looks very positive!

You are quite the optimist Aaron...I just looked at some posts from last year. On 6.22 fish were had well inside the 125 line out of Gari. We're not gonna be so fortunate this year I'm afraid.

OK, maybe we're only a week or so off....

I just like harassing Aaron about his "early" optimism....

I've got a "guys" camping trip scheduled from Wed 25th - Sun 29th. My dad will be in town from Houston, we're all taking time off work... So we're really hoping for more than just a halibut/salmon trip! You'd be an optimist too!

Scotch, Cigars, and fresh TUNA by the campfire?? Yes please!

All you old dogs might know all about this little graph. I found it today. Extrapolating this graph would show 60 degree water in 3 days at stonewall.
