Default retapping a hole.

Beings I cant find the bolts I need anywhere, I think I am going to attempt to retap the hole to a standard size. Has anyone done this with success. The hole tight now is 10mm and I am thinking about going up to 7/16. I believe I am going to have to drill it out a bit and then retap it to 7/16. What size bit will I need to accompolish this task. Thank you.

Thank you, I just hope I can get the tap into the hole to do the job. I am going to have to lift the body quite a bit to get in there.

I just seen this on ebay
http://cgi.ebay.com/M10-1-5-x-1-Mete...2em118Q2el1247

Would it be possible to just rethread the existing holes to the 1.50 thread?

Generally taps have the recommended size bit stamp on them.

You can get M10x1.25 rod at McMaster.com and locally
No rethreading necessary, I mentioned that in the last thread.

We call that all thread or allthread generically. Put a nut on the end and hit it with a weld bead so it can't back off and you have an ugly but functional bolt. Rod comes frequently in grade 2, 5, and 8. I'd go with the higher grades.

Drilling and threading to a larger size is an option if you have the room and tools. 7/16ths sounds workable.

I would be surprised if Mcmaster (online hardware delivered to your door) or the Tru Value on TV hwy an 185th didn't have your 10mm bolt. Is it something wierd?

FYI -

7/16-20 UNF requires a 25/64 or .3906 diameter tap drill
(Unified Nation Fine Thread)
7/16-14 UNC requires a letter "U" or .3680 diametertap drill
(Unified national Course Thread)

Hope this helps.

Thanks guys I did find the bolts. They are going to set me back 8.50 each, But after buying a tap, and spending hours trying to get it done that way. I figure I will just spend the money and get the bolts I need. Thank you for your help.
