Re: Is todays SST real ???
Gentlemen
I am going to try and go out Wed. if the current weather pattern holds. The NW winds don't really come up til 1 or 2 and the west swell is a non issue once you get there because it is a wonderful downhill run on the way home. The wind and windchop is the big IF. BUT then again we only have to run 23 miles to be in the zone. The Amigo got fish at 15 miles as he was trolling in on Sunday. I think the weather will be better in another week or so, but the fish may be at 40 miles or more by then. It is a real luxury to have them this close. Decisions, decisions. I will call down to Depoe to see if any of the charters went out and report back the weather conditions and catching status.
What am I going to do with my life when the tuna are gone.???

Re: Is todays SST real ???
I am really confused now. When Wak started this thread I pulled up the SST, and it showed the warm edge clear out at tuna town, just as he said. Today I pulled it up again and the date still shows the 9th, yet shows 60 degree water within 12 miles of Depoe. What gives??

Re: Is todays SST real ???
Salmonator
It is pretty confusing sometimes. Here is what I know........the temps can fluctuate 2 or 3 degrees from the a.m. pics to the pm. pics. The 60 degree water (the true edge) may be out near the 125/45, BUT the last three times I have gone out the high temp that I recorded (my guage may be off???) was 57.4. We got all our fish in 56.2 to 56.6 at the 23.5 mile mark. Temps are a great indicator, but when you have jumpers and breaking fish and diving birds......thats the real deal and temps don't play as much of a roll. When you have the temps, blue water, jumpers, breaking fish and diving birds.........................then it is WIDE OPEN, but you usually don't all the indicators at the same time. Hope this helps.

Re: Is todays SST real ???
Marty,
Are you going for tuna Saturday? I'll be at Depoe
Bay late Friday morning to change fuel filters and
to clean the air filters so I'll be ready for Saturday
morning (I hope).
Right now the plan is to leave Saturday morning about
5:30ish. Hope to see you there!!

Re: Is todays SST real ???
AssAssin
I have to babysit the little one Thursday, Friday and Saturday AND most of Sunday, so I am trying to get outside in the big blue before my obligations start. But...........if it is WIDE, I may have a backup babysitter. I would be in trouble (again) for a deed such as that, but what can you do??? Boy....I am going to be a mess when the tuna are no longer around to play with. I am already thinking of pulling the boat down to San Luis Obispo in California for the big bite that happens there in October and November and usually December also. They get a lot of those big 50, 60, 70 and 80 lb. albies. Last year or the year before they set 2 or 3 world records for pole caught albacore. AND they have live bait. How about a caravan down......fish for a week and limp home. Then maybe south to Cabo for the yellowfin off the Gordo banks and then to Zihuatenjho (spelling) for the 200 & 300 lb yellowfin on the mainland. Then I could come home and catch up with 8 months of yardwork and hope my wife isn't too mad for being gone that long. Who wants to join me???? I have to blame the idea on someone else.
Good fishin if I don't see you this weekend.

Don't worry about fishing this weekend. Go for it! Your "in-laws" in Salem will take care of the little one for a "ransom" of 30lbs. of tuna fillets. If you're interested, call M & M (we can't cover Calif or Mexico, though!)

Re: Is todays SST real ???
Marty,
Sounds like just toooo much fun! However, I have a
real job that I have to go to on a daily basis so that
I can pay for that new boat! We'll talk again about
a trip like that in 4 years, 9 months and 16 days
when I retire ...

Re: Is todays SST real ???
Good enough Dan, I have the mundane to do anyway as well. Besides I really can't imagine fishing without my mate, she really makes the trip fun.
I'll save a day off owed for hard work for the next nice set of ocean days. Stay in touch.
