Default IFISH VHF Channel 77

I was in Depoe yesterday and was talking to some charter skippers about the tuna fishing and the subject was brought up about all the sportboaters using channel 77. I was told that channel 77 is a "port communication" channel used "exclusively" in port. I have an icom vhf and it automatically switches my watts down to 1 watt just for this purpose. . So when everyone is using their VHF off the coast at the 25 watt setting it is 'walking over' the folks that use this channel in port at the 1 watt usage that is required. There are a lot of other channels we can use. I heard that a fine for this type of violation is $1,000, but I don't know who would enforce it, but the bottom line I wouldn't want to have the ifish folks getting a bad name or ???

What do you guys think???

Hi Marty,

I agree, this *is* an issue. Some radios will not
drop down to the 1 watt transmission state on ch. 77
and it does cause a problem. How about if we go up
or down one channel??

Another item about radio communications ... one of
the ifishers was ragging on a charter captain this
past Saturday on ch. 77 saying how he had had a really
bad charter trip out with him a few years ago and that
basicly this particular Captain (who has 34 years
experience in the charter business) didn't know the
first thing about ... yada, yada, yada ...

At any rate, I kinda had to laugh to myself while this
particular ifisher went on and on because the charter
Captain in question was monitoring ch.77, but communicating
on channel 80 (because he knows that channel 77 is
a port communications channel only). What was really
funny was said charter Captains comments to me on the
CB as the ifisher was going on with his rant!

The point is ... you may want to be careful about who
you are dissing on an open air-wave. You never know
who might be listening!!

Just a thought for what it's worth ...

How about 78?

I haven't heard anyone else on 77, but I'm all for moving if it's a problem.

I agree, be careful what you say ...

I'm good with 78 ... anybody else?? Problems/concerns
with using channel 78 instead of 77?? Can we get
the word out to everybody? Pilar, do you have an
e-mail list of salty dogs that you can send the new
channel usage number to?

Anybody look this up yet to verify that 77 is indeed a "reserved" channel?

Wak'em

Friday we got 23 with an average wt. of 25.57 lbs ea. and Sunday we did a half-day and got 19 with an average wt. of 20.71 lbs. ea. Sunday we trolled just three rods with traps and Friday out of the 23 we had 18 on the traps.

I think I finally talked Dean at Newport Englund Marine to order some bulk traps. I will post if and when he gets them in.

Nice to talking to you also...........even though as you left the boat I forgot that I had invited you over to have a beer but forgot to offer you anything. Next time for sure.

I don't really expect an answer, but was wondering who was doing the needless chatter? I was scolded once and heard other b.s. that was unwarranted. Even when I was overjoyed about being surrounded by dolphin and fighting fish at the same time I was told "this is how it allways is" as if trying to kill my buzz. No big thing, just wondering if it was the same person.

Here is a site from the fcc that lists usages.

Here's the FCC VHF Marine Channel summary.

Here are the legitimate choices for "fish chat":
NONCOMMERCI AL - Working channels for voluntary boats. Messages must be about the needs of the ship. Typical uses include fishing reports, rendezvous, scheduling repairs and berthing information. Use Channels 67 and 72 only for ship-to-ship messages. 9, 68, 69, 71, 72, 78, 79, 80, 67.

Not sure if it was the same person, and I don't want
to embarass him by naming names ... Just wanted to
put a 'word to the wise' out there!

Well Greg if it makes you feel any better, that was the first time, out of 5 or 6 trips, that it was like it "always is". If it were always like that I would've been done after 2 trips.
