Default Awesome Tuna Trip Saturday

Actually,

every time I get a chance to make a tuna trip -- it's awesome -- fish or no fish...

Seasquid's crew included a newbie to the albie game, and a seasoned veteran. We were headed for the magic "61 degrees" spot that has produced so well before -- never made it! I dropped gear eight miles east of the mark in water that was still a tich green, four miles later I hit the blue water and it was pandemonium. Four in the boat and one lost in a matter of minutes. Needless to say, I didn't leave the area all day. Birds everywhere, tuna everywhere, etc. I headed in by Noon as Seasquid's tuna capacity was maxed out with large fish -- up to 36 pounds. Seventeen total for the day, a couple lost. I even saw tuna under the boat in one spot while we were finishing off a double. I was 27 miles west of Depoe Bay.

The newbie was thouroughly impressed..."this sure beats salmon fishing." I couldn't agree more.

Other participants included Greg and had his fearless guide Otis (black lab) -- in other words Gregotis. Fish Assassin, Corrirod, Puffin (with Keta and Pilar's Mate aboard), WTB, a couple of charters, and one other large sport boat.

I had fish on just about everything I put out -- mostly smaller gear rather than the typical tuna jigs. Early on swimbaits were hot, what I call Sassy Shads (herring type color) with a lead head jig (200 yards off the stern), but I also did well on small purple/silver jigs, much like a salmon hoochie, blue/silver jigs, and a traditional Mexican flag jig on a Yo-Zuri diver.

Well, I hope that was not my last trip of the year, but it could be. So, more than anything else, thanks a lot everybody for the company this year. It's always nice to make new friends.

Be safe out there...

Seasquid out!

Roger that Seasquid. Greg and I had a damn fine time ourselves. Seems that the green mackerel colored cedar plug was the hot lure for us, although those fish were so fired up at times the would have probably nailed just about anything. Odd that we nailed so many fish and never saw a single jumper. Tons of birds and life but not a sign of the tuna until the reels started screamin'. Strange. Anyways, I gotta go wash all my stuff as everything seems to stink like a fish(I'm not complaining). Had a blast and hope to see you next season as I'm pretty sure that's my last trip this year as well. Nice way to go out though hunh?

<font size="2" face="verdana,arial,helv">Yeah, what he said!

The last trip of the year is in the future for us but the weather is going NW again.

The last trip of 2001 and 39 fish haul was 9/15/01 on 'Puffin'. Maybe we'll get the chance to best it.

Have always wanted to give tuna fishing a try but didn't want to get into a situation where you spend more hours traveling than you do fishing.

Not familiar with the sport, tactics, etc. and was wondering if the season will still be open in late September. I'm coming out to Tillamook Bay to spend a day salmon fishing with a guide and was wondering if tuna will still be a possibility? Also, are there guides and/or charters available for these day trips?

Aboslute awesome day folks! As always it was alot more fun having all the Ifishers out there together!

Good to have you aboard Keta, let's do it again sometime! (Only I'll do the bonkin next time so the head stays on!)

We started awful slow and watched Gregotis and Seasquid land the first 6 or so and then we came on full force. We ended up with 17 fish and at least 3 were over 30lbs. We had 3 doubles and one was a triple till we lost the 3rd fish. We lost a few at the boat and had a few "drive by's". So I'm thinking of naming the boat "No Pity" !

Great day on the water with sitings of pilot whales, humpy's, and about a million dolphins surrounding the boat! I tried to take a picture of the feeding frenzy that was going on with the thousand birds and dolphins surfacing but we'll have to wait to see if it turned out.

Again, great day fellas. Probably the last of the season though. :depressed:

Pilar/Jen, don't forget to use the purple killer the next time you go!

Awsome, Awsome!

This was by far the best fishing trip I've ever had. Being the last boat out we just kind of headed out to "61 deg" and waited to hear the reports. About five miles from the spot, Seasquid let out a holler about fish everywhere, so off to the slaughter we went. It didn't take ten min. and we had our first hook up. With just the two of us on board (Sailfish) we fished three rods and no handlines for a total of 14 large fish, 25lbs. to 36lbs.

I can't imagine a better trip if I tried.

1. Going out of one of the most beautiful harbors in the world.

2. Going fishing with a quality bunch of guys that look out for each other for safety and keeping no secrets when it comes to fishing.

3. Getting into the best fishing I've ever had. If there were a bunch of birds, there were a bunch of fish! As soon as we hit the line of birds we would hook up instantly. Doubles and triples!

4. Seeing life in the ocean like never before. Trolling into a frenzy of birds, having a fish on, and having dozens of dolphin around and under the boat all at the same time.

This is a trip I won't soon forget, so I better stop. This too is my last trip of the year. I don't need any more meat and need to do some maintainence on the boat.

Great to meet everyone, and hope to fish again with you guys.

Whew! What a day it has been! Time to reflect on Saturday's trip... maybe that will snap me out of the Monday blues.

I rolled into town Friday night and met up with Puffin (Big Jon), Phil & James. Keta rolled up... Seasquid, Jake (the crew for Gregotis) were all there, too.

Keta had loaned me a Senator 6/0 for my new yellow po'. Keta reminded me - always check your own gear - so I did  - and tore it down. All was good, but I didn't have a chance to put it together before heading to Depoe. Keta had that thing back together before you could wink your eye. Would have taken me at least an hour if not two. Thanks Keta!

Saturday was Puffin's 3rd consecutive day on the water, so we ended up sleeping in a bit - heading out of the keyhole around 7:30am. The new "strategy" was to let other fishers find the tuna and then swoop in and slaughter 'em. The fish, not the ifishers

GREAT day! I almost forgot to miss being on the "Pilar". Almost.

James and Phil are great to fish with. Big Jon's always fun and a great skipper. The fish were cooperative - most of them. Almost all of them were brought to the boat on stand-up gear.

Black and purple as well as dark green were the hot items early in the day. Bite was off a bit after we played with the porpoise and the weather was going from dark to light and back again. What kind of gear works consistently well in those conditions? We had one fishtrap out and changed up colors on the rest of the gear. Fishtrap was getting hit consistently. Then the broomtails were hot. Then it was back to Green, as well as black & purple.

Only 2 decent pics! Grrr! Tried and tried to capture those porpoise, but they were out of the water and back in by the time the camera would snap. Digital is great - to a point. I'll try and post the snaps tomorrow. One of James, the other is of a water spout we watched for awhile.

Puffin, Phil and James - thanks again for making it an awesome day! You guys are great company and I appreciate your help and consideration

Tom - great call on the bucket! Thanks again for posting about that little "issue". There is no fairer sex on the "Puffin". But captain and crew were accommodating and that was more than I asked.

Keta - I can't thank you enough for the loan of the reel, your help in putting it back together, you and all the guys helping spool the line on, so I could actually get some sleep and still fish my new po' in the morning. And thanks for keeping an eye on our vessel for the night!

Corrirod - Thanks for taking Lee out with you. I know it meant a lot to him. I'm really NOT mad at you, even though you did see "Bill" and didn't tell me until we got back to the dock.
Thanks for the "lucky" cedar plug. I will cherish it while it brings in the fish.

Seasquid and Ryanboat - thanks for getting us into the fish. We did fine at times, but it was nice to have that guiding hand when it got slow!

Gary - I don't know if he's ever even seen this board, but I hope he knows that he's "priceless"

Finally - Pilar - my friend. My number one Captain. Thanks for enabling me to feel confident to do this even though you couldn't be there. It means a lot to me that, through you, I've met these quality people. I really appreciate the knowledge and skill I learn from you. Thanks for insisting I take ALL the gear  We joked that I should have just brought the whole boat. Thanks for coming on down Saturday and fixing the trailer, helping us clean fish. Not to mention taking care of the catch, and me, when I reached the end of my endurance. You wear the Superman suit well, my friend.
Don't wear it out.

You are so welcome. Maybe you should wear those big shiny brass ones where everyone can see them. I've never had a more rewarding student.

You've got grit girl. A bunch of it.
