Packy's New Tuna Boat
Well Im exited and need to show off my new tuna boat to someone LOL!
This boat is ready to fish and only burns 1 gallon an hour! These old trollers are the future I believe, With gas prices the way they are, this is what I have decided to do to combat those prices. I can fish all day (15 hrs) for $75.00 with deisel even being being 5.00 a gallon. comes with all the Electronics and lots of room to store fish. sleeps 4 people and its really good in heavy seas. Sealed the deal today and Im bringing her home this weekend. It should be a fun trip. We are picking it up in lower BC and motoring it to Newport. Its 20 miles up the Fraizer River right now. Figure on taking a whole week weather permitting maybe doing some fishing on the way out of Neah Bay maybe if things go well. I can hardly wait.

Re: Packy's New Tuna Boat
I always admire those old boats with low RPM diesels. And you'll never be bored again, since theres always something that can be sanded. One of these days when I lose my need for speed, I will have to pick one up.

Re: Packy's New Tuna Boat
Yes, I have given up speed but I have more time, than I do money LOL! This boat cruises 8 knots and full speed is 9 knots at 8 knots it burns 1 gallon an hr. Besides how often is the ocean letting you go really fast anyway. It also steers it self, which will be nice, since the trips out will take longer. With the Salmon season shut down. I think you will see alot more of these come available at a reasonable price. I picked this one up for $10,000 and Its in excelent shape.

10K$ for 1 gal/hr. is pretty sweet. I spent a bit of time on a 62' schooner rigged with Jim Lyons tuna gurdies years ago & that was a great troller. We had some good days jigfishing >500 fish and I enjoyed the time I spent trolling.

Re: Packy's New Tuna Boat
Packy,
really beautiful.
I was thinking something similar (for the last 30 years!) but recently went in a slightly different direction. I see you are still a 'young man'. I wish you many fine hours working on her and running her and fishing her and just sorta thinking about her. You better get some Stan Rogers music. That's some salty!

Re: Packy's New Tuna Boat
I have been thinking about something like this and really like the idea. It will take awhile to get out but with a crew of four, three can sleep while one keeps watch and then rotate watchs and you will be there before you know it.
Will be a great ride and relaxing too.

Re: Packy's New Tuna Boat
Nice looking rig. I was thinking sail boat. Most will motor about 6-8 knots while you are fishing. Turn it towards home and let the monitor steer the way
Heave to overnight and get after them early in the am, before Tracker has had his first cup of coffee.
Good luck with that boat and have fun.

Re: Packy's New Tuna Boat
Packy- Having spent many a day (and night) aboard a 42 foot double ender as a youngster, I can only say that if you have proper expectations, you will be rewarded with a boat that will find a place in your heart for a lifetime.
Ice her up, head offshore when the time and weather is right, and return home 2-3-4 days later. Be mindful of the weather, and you can roam to the regions that sport boats only dream about.
A suggestion: put your gear out quietly in the morning. Start the engine and put it full throttle ahead..........

Re: Packy's New Tuna Boat
I like it. 100.00 max fuel bill for the day just cant be beat. And as mentioned before NO running past the fish to find fish.
If it steers itself's you can get plenty of sleep before you get to the hunting grounds.
Oh and some Gordan Lightfoot would be on my music list for your fine craft.
This is one of the best two days of owning a boat, make sure and enjoy it

Re: Packy's New Tuna Boat
Congrats! I used to fish with a friend on his slow boat, a 7.5 kt 42' Sea Chief aft cabin trawler.
We would just leave the night before, getting clear of the crab gear before dark. Fish from an hour before sunrise to the end of the morning bite, and catch more fish than the rest of the fleet that gets there an hour and a half after sunrise and fishes until 3. Chunk bait all night.
If you can swing the two day trip, leave at noon the day before, fish the evening bite, and hit the first light bite, and head in, you will crush the fish.
Hardest part is when you get in tidal areas. When you have a 4 kt current to steam against, it's tough to only be able to make 8-9kts. Most places you can find an eddy to slingshot against but not as you cross the bar.
Crossing an ebbing bar at 4-5kts relative speed is probably a dicey proposition in all but the best of conditions.
Keep a wetsuit, fins and mask on board, so you can get to your gear if you wrap a crab pot on your shaft or rudder.
Oh, and you will be learning to drive. I mean really learning. Putting a big single screw into a slip in a 20-25kt cross wind is VERY interesting. They only backup in one direction!
Good luck, and welcome to the cruiser set. There is a whole bunch of folks who dig the slow boat.

Re: Packy's New Tuna Boat
Packy;
Welcome to the trawler world where everything is slow and beautiful. I have been running a 45' twin screw for three years now and love every bit of it. It's like they say, drop your lines whenever you want and keep going. I picked up several fish in green water and they seem to run a bit bigger than the ones in blue. The other good thing is the ability to carry more ice to take care of those fish. I carry 400 lbs on each trip and use every bit of it.

Re: Packy's New Tuna Boat
Just a little history on myself for you guys. So you understand how I got the idea. I was a commercial fisherman from 1978 to 1990. The first boat I ever deckhanded on was a 38 foot double ender The July out of Tacoma WA. We fished out of La Push WA. The Two Sisters was alot like the July, and I just loved that boat. In fact I could of took that boat over back when I was 21. After my 3rd season on her in 1981. At that time. I was offered a Sunford 36ft fiberglass Montery Clipper style boat the Faithful out of Fishermans Terminal. It was brand new, had all the bells and whistles. I was young and dumb and didn't know any better and went for looks, instead of, what boat was really the better boat. Boy was I sorry! It was like fishing out of a big tupperware Bowl, and it only did 5 knots tops, It had a 4cyl. Ford Lehman. It would burn 60 to 80 gallons on a 4 day trip which was great! Scary to run around with your poles up and birds out of the water though, even in the Bay. In 1986 I took over a 36ft wooden double ender called the Lee Ann K out of Garibaldi OR. It was a great boat, but too slow again about 5 knots, another 4cyl Ford Lehman, Great on fuel though LOL! But a nice riding good sea boat at least. So I do know a little about double Enders and what a wooden boat means for up keep and work. Which really, was some of the draw for me. I love working on boats. During that 12 years, I have fished from SE Alaska To San Francisco. Either as a skipper or a Deckhand and have Fished for Salmon,Tuna,Halibut,Blackcod,Brownies, all the bottom fish, Crab, Shrimp, Prawns and Scallops. I have Trolled,Trawled,Longlined and Pot fished. Tuna was always my favorite and still to this day is my favorite sport fishery too. So now you know the "Rest of the Story" LOL! I love fishing, and just being out on the ocean. Now I can afford to do it again. The Esther Marie was just getting to expensive to operate and keep up. So, I say.
"Help A Commercial Fisherman, Buy An Old Troller" You Wont Be Sorry!
Again guys, Thanks for all your compliments! Here are some more picks as requested.

Re: Packy's New Tuna Boat
This just what I have been thinking as well!
I am nearing completion on a total refit of an old 37' trawler.
We have a spot for it in Newport, should be ready later this summer.
Lazy 2-3 day trips for tuna and ???
These boats have over 1,000 mile range, bring the cost down and have plenty of room.
This will also be our beach house. Where else can you get waterfront property like this!
Let the slow boats unite

Re: Packy's New Tuna Boat
Looks like you got a sweet deal on a bristol boat. I've got an 8 knot boat and have had some great days out there. I've got a friend who just left 3 weeks ago on his converted Canadian Troller for Alaska with a return date in September. Best blood pressure medicine going. It's a different feel for the ocean when you can't out run anything. I can tell you are going to enjoy her.

Nice boat Packy. Last week, my uncle picked up a real similar boat from newport that is now in Garibaldi. I can't remember the name right now.
Are you the same Packy from the oregonlive basketball forum?

A Great Ride! We'll all be envious (in our speed boats) on our way back east to re-fuel, leaving you, and the fish, in our wake. I've been struggling to restore a 1920 double ender.....it's the history of these boats that makes them mythical, and keeps us motivated. Good Luck.

Re: Packy's New Tuna Boat
I am okay, Thanks for your concern. Found out I need both my knees replaced can't get around all that good right now. I can only be on my knees about an hour or so and then I'm crippled for the rest of the day need two major surgeries. But I am alive at least The boat completely broke me and put me into some very deep unexpected debt, one week after I bought her. I had to put $15,000.00 more dollars into her and that killed me. So, between not able to get around to good, and all the debt I'm in. I had to put her up for sale and It 'is killing me, because now she is in good shape and I can't keep her. Also,I have to some how, figure out how to get to Newport right now, in some of the worse driving conditions so far this year. I got a call and it sounds like my pumps quit working for some reason and I need to get a heat lamp in the engine room before this weather gets any worse. Some times I think I am cursed LOL! But yes other than that I am Okay I guess LOL!
Thanks for asking, and to the one that asked. Yes, I am the Packy on Oregonlive forums. I am the La PIne Jr High 8th Grade basketball coach
basketball is my second love.
