Default So am I a problem?

I failed to draw a rifle Elk tag for a very hard to hunt, darn-near nobody goes there unit. But the ODFW drawing system issues me a tag every-other year and the unit has unissued tags every year. Go figure. (That reminds me, I'm going to bug my legislator to get the ODFW to drop the "buy the hunting license so you can enter a drawing")

So I'm going to bow-hunt instead. Yep, I wanted to rifle hunt, but now as a last resort I'm going to bow hunt. So what do all you bowhunting purists think of that - good or bad?

Which unit are you referring to and how many points did you have? Sorry you were not selected. Maybe next year you'll be a shoe in? Wheels.

I think if you have never bow hunted before, welcome to a good group of folks. Take the winch off your truck, put your insulated boots away and start walking a few miles a week.

Other than that, prepare to get an education. The woods have much to teach you

i would start walking a few miles a day. i went on a 2 hour hike last night with 40 lbs of weights in my pack and my 3 year old on my shoulders to start to get ready for this season.
i hope you practice daily there are to many people out there that think they do not need to and end up screwing up and wounding an animal. it is a lot harder then it looks and take time to prepare yourself.
good luck.

Good luck to you. Nothing beats getting close enough to spit on them but not being able to shoot because you can't draw.

Just a little

Actually folks, I've been bowhunting since 1994 and have taken a couple of Rosey's. I switched to bowhunting in Idaho with my son, so we can make some memories while I'm still on this earth. I started rifle hunting those itty-bitty E.Oregon Elk about 5 years ago more as a social event with friends.

Talked to a guy today that drew Wenaha Archery Bull with 7 points. His dad drew as well. Not 45 minutes later talked to a guy that did not draw Wenaha archery with 14 points. He was ticked.

I'm not a complete bow hunting purist but I think using bow season as a fall back is definitely a problem. So yes, you are at least part of the problem. Don't take it personal. I do the same thing with deer on occasion but I would prefer to have to designate weapon at the time of draw. It seems like it would be more equitable to "dyed in wool" bow hunters as well as the folks who only want to rifle hunt but have to compete for tags with EVERYBODY.

Not sure if you were really looking for opinions but you got one.

I thought this was the hunting area......seems like you might doing a bit of fishing for some fun here...?????

I've killed bulls with rifles and bows and I enjoy each equally in different ways. There are definitely argument that can be made for "picking your weapon" but until then, we have the system we have. I plan on picking up my Ultra Mag when I draw the unit I want so I can hunt with my brother and I will enjoy the heck out of it when I do.....until then, I am MORE than happy to hunt them with a bow. My wife is ALL about the rifle thing and it gets her out there....that is what counts.

Got a nice bull last year after passing on spikes (yes - All public land....no inside advantages).....so just because a person has rifle hunted doesn't mean they can't effectively archery hunt.

It is ALL good when you in the woods hunting elk!

No arguments from me... Our party missed with six preference points this year, so I'm planning to bow hunt, as well!

However, I wouldn't characterize the decision as "a last resort", nor even a "second best" option. Afterall, it's time in the woods by yourself, so how can it be anything other than "a great alternative"?

I support your rights to choose- Because you are "Hunter"!

I only hope that others in the same situation have their
gear and are prepared. Practice-practice-practice.

I dislike stories where people do not draw and have a buddies
bow that they borrow or they picked up at a garage sale!!

For the record I am primarily an archery elk hunter but depending
on the years choose rifle or bow.

I am a student of the Wenaha points & draws, I am point saving till I have the time and money for hunt. In 2009 I go in with 14 points or save the 15th etc.

No one trying for Wenaha Archery used more than 13 points.

Everyone with 14 points in the rifle Wenaha Tag drew it.

Not to cause a hassle but I don,t believe the figures. One of my hunting buddys drew this year a rifle wenaha big bull tag with 17 points my two hunting buddys have 15 each and did not get drawn and the cabin we rent in troy the owner has 16 points and no tag. Just some info to hash around.
