CR Tuna run - roll call for Sat.
We've got 2 boats headed out of the CR for a Tuna run on Sat. Seats are full, but if anybody's interested in tagging along in their boat reply before 1-2 today, meet up at Warrenton on A-dock (outside row, West end) 5-7pm Friday or be at B10 at about 6:00. I monitor 16, 72 and 11. Watch for a 34 Tolly SF and a 38 Uniflite SF (with outriggers no less !!). I'd like to say watch for the ifish burgee, but not yet !
We'll be running 20 knots if the forecast holds (3 foot swell, 1 foot chop) and be headed out to the 125 line (bout 40 miles off the beach, 50 from Warrenton). Minaki is going out Sunday as well (he's a maniac  ) with a different crew.

Re: CR Tuna run - roll call for Sat.
New guy on the site.
Just wanted to thank all of you for all the good information. I have followed the site for the last six weeks and have garnered much insight and new ideas. This Sat. I will be going out for my third Tuna trip. Last year I did a solo out of CR to 50 miles and caught 10 bullets before realizing I didn't have a big enough ice chest to continue fishing. I also found out how difficult they can be to clean.
Second tuna trip was out of Newport about four weeks back, on my boat with a crew of three. I have a slow boat and so we left at 1:30 am. Caught 18, ranging much larger than what I caught last year. I will be heading out of Ilwaco on Saturday around 2:30 am with a crew of three. Holler as you go by. Hoping to find them at around 25 miles........wishful thinking, but you never know. Ocean forecast is sure looking sweet.

Welcome 8knots! It's good to hear that there are other 'addicts' out there.
Best of luck to you tomorrow!

Re: CR Tuna run - roll call for Sat.
8knots - what's the name of your boat (or is it 8knots) and a descrip? If you haven't figured it out my boat is "Miss B Haven". One of the guys wants to go at 3am but word I've got is the bite is still in the afternoon/evening so I'm going to hang till daylight and then go (and stay later).
We'll be heading due west out of CR until we hit the water and then keep trolling west until we hit fish big or hit that 63 deg stuff (looks like 124 45 or so).
Last weekend we got a few as we went from 58-59 deg. It was too rough to keep going.
Good luck, hope to see you out there (oh - check your e-mail and welcome aboard).

Re: CR Tuna run - roll call for Sat.
Went out Saturday, after driving down from business in Seattle to Tigard and then to Ilwaco. Full of optimism, but ended up with only two tuna...23 and 28 lbs. There were a total of 10 boats ( commercial, charters and private). Some were catching more fish but it was obviously a slow day between as we trolled from 6:30 am until 1:30 pm.
Going out across the CR bar early the stars were phemonenal, for the first several hours of running there were consistant lightning bolts on the far horizon and then when the rain hit early there was a huge rainbow. There is alway something to experience on the big blue even when the fishing is less than perfect and I have to chalk this trip up to paying some dues.
Sounds like the fish were further south. I am curious if anyone had a hot tuna day out of CR on Saturday? Have to bring my boat back up river next week. So it is another year of talking about the good trips this year and eating canned and vacuum sealed tuna and salmon.
By the way on one post someone asked about wine with tuna......I like Pinot Gris.......like Wilamette Vineyards or Chardonnay like La Creama. Also good with any beer, rum and coke, seven and crown royal............
Boat is 1973 Grand Banks named BOADICEA. Good luck on the tuna to those of you on later Sept. trips.

Re: CR Tuna run - roll call for Sat.
8kts gotta love those trawlers. A good buddy of mine in CA has a 42' Sea Chief and has taught me the finer points of going slow. We did a 10 day trip once from SF to Southern CA, spearfishing, lobster diving, and trolling for tuna.
If you are having trouble shucking tuna, you are doing something wrong, they are pretty easy to clean. Shoot me an email if you ever need crew and I can give you a first hand lesson.

Re: CR Tuna run - roll call for Sat.
What is a reasonable target for tuna season? I am getting the idea that August through September but would like more experienced opinions. Any help? Thanks, WP

Re: CR Tuna run - roll call for Sat.
WP, consulting the log ... earliest trip July 7, 2002. Latest trip September 15, 2002. The swell becomes a regular thing in October. You know, the constant 6 to 7 foot NW swell.
I think the fish are still there but the big base swell leaves you little or no room for weather degradation.
So if you must do a late Sept. trip be paranoid about the weather and go in groups

Re: CR Tuna run - roll call for Sat.
In NorCal, during El Nino, we had fish in January, believe it or not. I have caught fish there in October many times. I think here it is probably shorter, but only by a few weeks. Keep your eyes on the SST, as long as there is water above 58 within range, the fish will be there.
