Re: Tuna, one, two, Threemuch!
Well I finally got a ride to Tuna town. And what a wild ride it was , I finally got home and showed off my tuna blood all over my face and hat... The wife was less than impressed.
Holy cow do those fish bleed..
arrived at the dock last night for an early am departure. fishwhenican was asleep in his rig and we were getting things reaady and Puffin pulls in about the time we were heading to bed so we stay up and chat with him and talk about game plans for the morning. so we got to bed shortly after and got up at 5:00 to find the parking lot filling with Ifishers. for our early run we had Fishwhenican, WP, Uglygreen, Wakm, Salmonator showed up later and missed the shotgun start.
start heading out and we turned the corner to leave the boat basin and Kurt says "how in the heck are you supposed to get out, certainly not through that craggy swelly swirly gap in those rocks" so we followed another brave soul through the hole in Depot bay.
We started out on a 270 course for warm water. Uglygreen is the first out, and spots commercial boats working and tons of birds in the water and gfets the first fish for the day I believe it was a double. threemuch was number 2 boat to the spot at 25 miles. we set our gear and started trolling Of course we had to ask that question on everyones mind, whats a Tuna hit like?
Not soon after a rod folds and screams the sound we all love to hear. FIsh on...
the morning was good we had 4 fish in the boat by 10:00 and it was looking really promising for lots o carcomatic, fishing got really slow and we started prospecting for fish and headed west even further we made it to around 35 miles with one or two more on and in the boat. fuel was a concern so we decided to run back in to puffin as he was starting to hit fish. halfway there I spot some jumpers and we put the lines back in the water and nothing so we just decided to troll our way back to the barn. we started back in and a mile or two later fish on again.
Outside rod hits and Bugleman gets on it so quick he's like a flash. so we keep up the speed and start to pull the handlines to clear the gear and Kurt says hey theres a fish on this handline speed back up so I can plane him out of the water. so kurts messing with the handline fish and were back up to speed and Bugleman is still listening to his reel sing we get the fish in the boat and another rod starts singing. TRIPLE fish on .... Three more fish in the boat and there are jumpers a hundred yards from us on our stern so we try the Fishtraps for nothing and get the fish bled(did I mention that these fish bleed quite a bit) trying to control these fish on deck is a chore with gear everywhere and the tails slapping so fast on the deck.its hard to catch them to makem stop meanwhile blood on the deck is becoming and aerosol and is everywhere all the way up on the forward bulkhead inside the cabin head to toe blood spray.
we get back under power and head straight back in on the troll and hook up again. tjis time the fish misses the plug and I catch the boil behind the lure and wait knowing that he'll come back after missing that. he comes back around and lays the rod over and we try to maintain speed for a possible double or more but before we could even star clearing gear it got off. we started back in and nailed on more on the way.
Grand total of 10 fish up to approx 30Lb.
It was a kick in the pants I'd like to thank Threemuch for the invite I really enjoyed it.
I can't wait to go again.

Re: Tuna, one, two, Threemuch!
I'm now addicted! we fished a little further out (30-35 miles). 13 fish in the boat. Puffins group got 11. I got home too late , have to work tommorrow, next time I do a tuna trip the next day will be open. Blood every where in the boat, like puffin said "it looks like a fish exploded in the boat" Black/purple Zukers and Mexican flags worked the best. Ugly Green, let me know how to get your cedar plug back to you, it was good for 2 fish on 1 in the boat.

Yeehaaa - I'm tired just reading that story. Good story Bait Boy. 5 of us lost our innocence on the Tuni's last Saturday. I almost thought I was in Cabo playing that fish on Rod and Real !!

Don't worry, Rick, I'm relinquishing my seat for you guys when Pilar gets back... as long as you all go during the week.
Corrirod, YES! I'm using my new harness to keep my buttocks in my office chair... but that doesn't mean I'm actually getting any work done.
What time are you arriving tonight? I'm not staying at Depoe, but perhaps I'll roll down there and say howdy.

What happened to Popeye, I thought he was going out yesterday but I haven't heard anyone say if they saw him?
Popeye, you out there? The tuna fever probably got to him so he headed to the 100 mile mark!! Or maybe he's after Bill!!

Re: Tuna, one, two, Threemuch!
Jen I'm sure that some sort of weekday arrangment can be made for the boys trip. Good luck on your trip tomorrow.
I don't think anyone saw or heard Popeye while we were out. In all the carnage I think we kinda misplaced some of our fellow fisherman. WE had a bunch of guys out with us, and it was really hard to keep track of who was around. especially with folks yelling Fishon here, Fishon there. hey whats your numbers.
You know how the chase goes.

Re: Tuna, one, two, Threemuch!
Great report Rick, thanks. Picture Time!
First, for those who want to know, numbers.
Most of our fish came late around 44 55 and 124 42 in to 124 40. We got early fish at 44 56 and 124 36.
On to the pics! Three early fish.
Total catch
Crew with fish
Depoe Entrance (nobody told me about the pucker factor here!)
Happy face (what are all those spots?)

Re: Tuna, one, two, Threemuch!
Gosh! I hope if Popeye went out, everything's okay.
Rick: Thanks! I'll be pulling for you guys when you get out. My gut tells me there's a couple of solid weeks of good days out there between now and the end of Sept.
Hey! What are those spots? Tuna Pox?
Corrirod: If Puffin gets into a ton of fish that keeps him at the cleaning station half the night, I'll be down there to help. Otherwise, I'll probably be getting ready to hit the rack by the time you roll in. Look forward to seeing you in the a.m.
TunA, TunA, TunA!

Re: Tuna, one, two, Threemuch!
The carnage of a triple is priceless. A slimy blood soaked deck, cleared rods and tangled hand lines combined with gaffed fish flying over the rail. WoW is all I can say. Not for the mumble headed or faint hearted. I am so glad they mellow out when hoisted by the tail.
Hey Rick good thing you were wearing safety glasses to keep out the tuna pox
The deep root beer broom tail was the early favorite but got bit off on the 3rd hit. I dont know if it was the distance or the color but we had it way back there.
Thanks Kurt for the ride. I will pay back in kind and will get a chance to watch your rod pick up speed this fall and/or winter. Your choice on my favorite rivers. Guests get first fish on my boat too.
Good luck every one. Time to chase deer and elk for a few weeks.

Re: Tuna, one, two, Threemuch!
Great pics!!
I think all those spots are from "TUNA FEVER"!!
My first ever Tuna trip. What a great way to spend a Thursday.
The Puffin got out of the hole at Depoe Bay ay 6:30am. The late show. The ocean was a little lumpy, but it got much better. I was really impressed with all of the communication we had with the Ifish connection out on Big Blue. You guys are AWSOME.
We heard the first fishon report, and got numbers, headed to the spot to find thousands of birds working the waters. Strung out the gear, 4 hand lines, and started trolling. We pick up our first fish on a pink and white zucker. Big Jon told me to grab a hooch-ie and put it on my rod and run it way back of the boat. I grabed a zucker broomtail with the Mexican flag colors. My rod is a G. Loomis 7ft. saltwater series 30-50lb. medium fast action with a Daiwa 50h with 65lb power pro line. We continue to troll, and about 5 minutes later, my pole buckles, I mean BUCKLES!! the 50h starts screaming out line and the rod is just going CRAZY!!  The torpedo peeled 100 yards of line before Big Jon turned the boat so I could get the reel to stop sceaming, and get a feel for what it is like to catch a Tuna on standup gear. Man, those fish pull hard. We were gaffless, and had to bring it in by grabbing the leader and pulling hard. Big Jon got a knife, and and started the bloodletting, I agree with an earlyer post, those fish just gush out the blood, and with the wild thrashing around, it gets every where.
I believe that the "fever" is very contagous, so be prepaired for something that will affect you like no other fishing trip. I will not forget how it feels to be hanging on and having the reel peel out line faster than I ever thought possable.
Total fish for the boat; 11, two hookups lost on hand lines, one rig lost on my pole,(do not ever thumb the spool when a torpedo is taking line)
8 fish on hand lines, 3 on stand up gear.
Good luck to all this weekend, and BE SAFE!
Peace, Tom

My answer Jen, is " YEESSSSS!!!"
Have fun on Saturday, and oh, by the way, I managed to pitch the "you know" bucket into the drink yesterday.
Most trips Puffin does not have any of the fairer sex on board with him. Just a little heads up for you.
Man, I now know just what you have been talking about these last few weeks, the "Tuna fever" has gotten ahold of me something fierce.
Be safe, and GOOD FISHING!!
Tom

Re: Tuna, one, two, Threemuch!
TOM! Hey, thanks for letting me know about the bucket! I'll run by the house and get a replacement on my way out of town!
And by the way, if I expected to be treated as "a fairer" anything, I sure wouldn't be keeping the company I do!
Funny thing is, though, they do treat me a little differently.
I'm outta here! Have a great, safe weekend, everyone!

<font size="2" face="verdana, arial, helv">YOWCH is right!! I think we burned between 45 and 50. We ran all the way out to tuna town (not quite 50 miles) and probably trolled another 3 hours at 9mph average. I had just less than a half a tank left which is more than I thought I would have burned but just fine nontheless.

Re: Tuna, one, two, Threemuch!
Yeah, I know. It's not the price of the gas that kills me, it's the lack of range. Damn thirsty 225hp two stroker. I get about 1.5 mpg on plane, but trolling is 7-10GPH, and we trolled for 6 or 7 hours, plus running about 60 miles. The flowmeter always reads about 10% high, so probably only 95 or so at the pump.
