Just courious
Just courious if anyone would be for every unit in Ore, east and west, requireing a draw to get a tag? That would mean that if you don't get the unit you draw for, you won't get to hunt that species.
Reason I ask is I went three years in a row without drawing for the unit I live in. Because of that it was either travel about 200+/- miles or don't hunt. I met a guy from Joseph several years ago that had the same problem. He would have had to drive over 300 miles to hunt because he couldn't draw in his home unit.

Why, if a unit has a herd population to support a general season, why impose a draw, seems kinda selfish.
Its hard enough to keep folks hunting in Oregon, everything says numbers are dropping.
What could you possibly hope to gain by this???

Re: Just courious
no. i feel for the eastern oregon residents with long travel times, but on the other hand, idaho has general season tags. and it is right across the river

Re: Just courious
What about bow hunting if you don't draw your rifle tag? Some of the units have limited draws I know but at least you don't have to go 300 miles then.

I believe they should make bow hunting limited draw hunting. I'm a die hard bow hunter too. My biggest reasoning behind this is because many guys (not everyone) do exactly what you suggest. They put in for their rifle tags and don't get them so they decide to pick up their bows a few times during the summer and hunt with it. That is asking for trouble. You should practice year round if you can. I've seen it as bad as guys picking up their bows to shoot for the first time all year or even go out and by a new bow a couple days before the season. Why isn't it limited draw anyways? I'm willing to sacrifice.

Draw state wide with perference going to local folks living in the unit/county. I agree with Don if the fact eastern oregon kinda gets the shaft. If I dont get a draw, I just drive down the road 5 miles to hunt. Gas prices aint helping the matter none either.

Re: Just courious
Sounds great, put the whole state in a draw only and reduce hunting opportunity across the board. That ought to be the final nail in the coffin for tons of hunters.

Re: Just courious
i agree that the guys and gals living in Eastern Oregon do get hoses if they don't draw but that's the system we have.
I agree that archery should be a limited draw in Eastern Oregon.

Hey Don, been a while! How are the boys doing?
Baltz, the Snake is still quite a few miles from Antelope so just across the river isn't alot of help for most of us in the central/eastern part of the state.
The real answer is manage the herds and predators to support enough animals for a general season on the east side too. I know, I know, but let's not loose sight of the real problem.

Doing fine. Busy with city stuff and not doing all I'd like. Did get the pups out last week and finally shot a few birds for each. Now to clean off the table and FF them! They are really looking good on birds, Squirt coming on like gang busters now. Lot of baby pigeons now too. Doubled plus the count in my big pen already.
Himself!
I agree that doing something to better manage our herds over here would be better. I'd also like to see an increase in tag numbers on the west side. When I lived over there we were over run with deer. They could go to three tags a season and that would take a lot of pressure off the east side plus might convince some of us over here to go over there. And most people will not get three, probably not even two but the incentive would be there.
People can say what they want about a big mule deer, a trophy blacktail is much more of a challenge. Need to get the hounds back on the cats too I think plus, encourage in some way more coyote hunting.
