Tuesday TUNA report
We spent a long day on the water (covered 140 miles), but came back with some toads that tore us up on the light gear (several over 30lb., 265lbs total for 12 fish).
Weather: It was suppose to be ugly, but it was fine. The further out we went the bigger the lump. Ocean was still a little mixed up but no problem. We ran back in at full throttle.
Our plan was to head thru the 61 spot (water was 55 when we got to it) and then towards the 125/45 area. We saw our first jumpers at 44 56.78 & 124 50.90. Trolled for awhile, but no takers, so we continued out past the 125/45 to find 61 degree water. Worked an area 45 02.41 & 125 02.35 with the Irish and Misty for 4 nice fish....but it was slow and we decided to head back in to try for a more defined temp break. Found birds and a school of sipping tuna, they had their dorsel fins and tails out of the water eating plankton or ??. We drifted next to them and hooked 4 on fish traps and only landed one, (big fish, light line). Called a friend (who was heading in) that had 9 fish and he gave me some numbers. By the way this guy is staying in the big RV at the launch in Depoe....tell him thanks (again for me). We found our fish to the west of his numbers in 62.5 degree water and there were 4 or 5 commercials working the area. To make a long story short, the fish were at 44 49.04 & 124 50.77 and in the same area 44 48.66 & 124 50.77. Once you find the fish, stay with them as there is a lot of areas that are not hold anything. We landed another 7 fish in this area, two of these fish were well over 30 lb. I think this area was about 38 miles from Depoe.
We landed 3 fish on the small natural cedar plug on the diver, 2 on a mean joe green type tuna clone and the rest on fish traps. We trolled the traps or cast to boiling and finning tuna.
I will try and do my best to come with you guys on Thursday, but I think Friday will work better for me.
Good Luck to everyone and be sure to take some time to soak in the granduer of how lucky we are to have this ocean in our backyards.
