Re: malhaer antelope help?
about 30 miles down Shumway road. Lots of Antelope when I was there and If I had a rifle I would have been done in ten minutes... Missed a couple with a bow as I tried the spot and stalk techniques. There was lots of water then, I am sure there is lots of water now too.
Good luck!! And yes, look towards the alfalfa fields to see the big bucks

Re: malhaer antelope help?
Congrads to both of you guys!
There are plenty of good goats in the Malheur unit. Talk to the locals as you pass through Burns. It's all about scouting time and good optics, you'll find the goats.
I would recommend you get into the more remote areas in the S.E. section of the unit, and get off the roads (even the jeep trails). Other hunters can become a nightmare if you don't.
If this is your first time drawing a Antelope tag, learn how to field judge the bucks. Don't learn the hard way about "ground shrinkage"!! And exercise trigger control.
You guys are in for a great hunt!!

Tough part is done so now what I would do is put the crosshairs behind the shoulder of the buck you want breathe and squeeze the trigger. Used to work for me in MT.

Re: malhaer antelope help?
South of Juantura, On Shumway road there are lots of altelope, also areound stinkingwater pass there are some good areas, The further you get from the main roads, (think really gnarley jeep trails) the more you will see. Also, there is a good campground called riverside park, with some decent hunting nearby, if there is water, there is some good catfishing to be had at warmsprings resivoir.
Love that country, I drew an antelope tag for the beuhla unit this year (just north of malhuer) and cannot wait to be in the sage agian!!

I was hunting in the mountains.By the way I know this one was over 16 inches because it was bigger than the one my dad got a few years back and it was 15 7/8 out of the same area.

Re: malhaer antelope help?
Killed this buck in 2000 over there. No 16 incher, but a good antelope considering my 10 yr old son was on the hunt with me.
I'll PM you some places this week to check out if you'd like.

Re: malhaer antelope help?
The most difficult job you will have in harvesting a quality buck, will be field judging a "goat" on the hoof. Look at lots, range estimate. Don't shoot a buck the first day. Concentrate later in your hunt. In 2005 my wife killed a buck scoring 84", the first two times I looked at the buck I thought he was 14''. Not until I put Swarovski spot scope on his head did I see all the mass, the stickers, the length of cutters. Wow!!! 3 hours later my wife put a hole in his heart at 80 yds. Awesome!!
The buck I killed surpassed hers by 2'', again very difficult to field judge a goat on the hoof. I looked him over for nearly two hours before the stalk and nearly 4 hours later killled in his bed at 280 yds. Both bucks were old, with lots of mass and 7-9 year teeth. I've looked at alot of "goats" over the years and still am baffled by these "buggers." Wished I could hunt them more. Draw is soooooooo difficult. Good news, my 23 yr. old daughter just drew one. "Goat huntin'" we go!!
God Bless

Lots of Quality!! bucks on Public Land, just do your homework!! Most folks that hunt them are there and gone in just 2-3 days. By monday of your hunt no one will barely be left and the quality bucks are there. Shake a leg
God Bless
