Default Steens 169a help

Looks like I will be headed to the Steens to hunt with my buddy for a buck.

I have been to the steens once, I remember it was a long ways away, my diesel didnt run very good on top of the hill and looking off to the east was some impressive views.

Anybody have any suggestions they are willing to share on what part of the unit to hunt for a big buck. We need to head over and get some scouting out of the way pretty soon. We would prefer to spot and stalk so big open country would be preferred but we could do anything for a stud buck.

i know the steens isnt what it use to be some years ago, but there are still some big bucks over there but you are gonna have to cover some country, from what i have heard. Just like any other unit if you put in the time to scout and put some miles on those boots you have a chance at a good buck. I remember back in the day when steens was 4 point or better buck, the good ole days.

Thanks for the PM's guys.

Starting points are a good thing on a scouting trip, I hate to waste a day trying to find something huntable.

When I hunted that unit two years ago I used google earth and found some areas that I didn't think that anyone else would go and that is where we shot all three of our bucks. one 5x5 and 2 4x4 all were shot at the same time in a little herd of 4 deer. The only deer not shot was the biggest but he was laying down so no one could see him. good luck

Perfectcast story has a lot of value.

The big bucks will often lay and hide and try and let you walk by and most often folks do.
Take good optics and look under every tree and rimrock. We shot a 28 inch folk years ago. I spotted his left two tines in the sunlight at 400 yards. He was laying down at the base of a big rock face, tucked back in with a big sage in front of him.

When I saw him he was watching us! He stayed there for over 2 hours while I worked to get my dad in position. He watched me walk 150 yards below him in the bottom of the draw. Then back up to where my dad was.

We couldnt get any closer so My Dad shot him at 200 yards and when he stood up my friend hit him from 400 where we origianlly spotted him from.
Great experience .

So look , look ,look!!!

Have fun its a great and beautiful place!

There were some great areas that just opened up under access and habitat that have not had public hunting in years. this is going to be a good time for Steens. I drew the tag as well.

Boy oh Boy the Steens. Many a trip I will never forget and one I wish I forget someday. There is one place on that mountain that holds some very mystical memories for me. I hope to visit again someday and share it with my kids, but my last trip there has left a scare very deep.

Go listen to Peter Gabriel's San Jacinto

I happened to be thinking of these lyrics while walked up on a hill not far from some ancient Indian camp sites. Got some goose bumps and the feeling that I was no longer alone. Every time I visited the Steens since I have felt the same every time I got near that hill.

Good Luck on the Hunt
