Re: Coho Limit
Any bets on how long the season will last with a 9,000 limit of fish? If the fish show, I'm betting the season will be over by July 7th.

First you have to find the fish.

Re: Coho Limit
What was the quota of coho last year? It seems like it was only about 10,000 last year. Is that right? And because they were tough to find the season still lasted a long time.

Re: Coho Limit
I agree, IF we find the fish.
Although, the season may last past the 4th of July weekend...have you checked the tides for July 3 - 7?
Depending on the wind contribution, T-bay bar is likely to be restricted to <20 or even <26 well past daylight.

Re: Coho Limit
June 24th I think, 2 fish limit, might get #10 between the 2 if your lucky, don't wait if you want any at all, probably won't last more than a week, I'll try to get my share...weather permitting, just cause it might be the only Salmon I get all year.

Re: Coho Limit
We will be in Winchester Bay June 28 thru July 5 and we have found the fish every year....the problem will be keeping the nooks off the baits.
Last year we had 4 coho and two 30# nooks in the box in two hours, all at 12 -20 pulls. I wont mind releasing more fat chinook, as long as I get my silvers........

The quota was 54k last year. It was a pretty good year for me personally. I just left the Tuna gear home and focussed on Coho. I am guessing 3 weeks of fishing.

Re: Coho Limit
Looks like we better get em quickly then. If its decent tides and wind, and we can find them it will probably be all over within 10 days. I've got a pretty basic question here, since its only 9,000, why don't they wait to start the coho season till 2 months later on August 22? The fish are much bigger then. I wonder if anyone has ever suggested that or am I missing something? Seems like the coho out of Newport are about 6 to 8 lb in June but they turn in to about 12 to 15 lb in late August early Sept.

The quota last year was 54k. The predicted run for this year is down from last year, based on the quota of 9K, so there won't be as many fish out there. It may take more time to reach that quota number this year, due to the fact there will be less fish out there.
If you wait to fish late August or early September off Newport, most of the fish have move up north off the Columbia River by then, and not very many hatchery fish will be off the central Oregon coast during this time frame. We would never reach our quota, if we started that late in the season. It is a catch 22, wait late season and catch very few fish, but they are big fish or catch your quota early on and are smaller fish.

Re: Coho Limit
Yes there is two area's to fish. one on the oregon coast that is I think
about 9000 fish and then there is a fish that starts on the end of june and that is off of the CR only that fish is so many days aweek thing .
Now the CR fish has a 5300 nooks as will as aprox 10000 silvers.

I was talking about the central Oregon coast salmon season, not the northern coast season for Coho and Chinook.

Re: Coho Limit
As said, yep 2 fish, I think the fish will be hard to find early on, and when found they will be small.
I wish they woud have opeded the season later with a the 9000 catch, then we could have maybe caught a little bigger fish.
Oh well, it will be fun.

Re: Coho Limit
In past years, including last year, the coho fishing was dang good out of Newport even in late August. Last year picked up Coho on the way back in with our tuna end of August. I remember 3 or 4 years ago when they reopened Coho for about 6 days during the first week in September and we all limited out within about one hour every day fishing south of Newport down there between Ona beach and Waldport. The fish were big for Coho. Easy to remember because that time of year it was an easy ride going south then we would get the crap beat out of us coming back to port. Anyway, I still wish they would have started the season later this year and let em grow bigger since the quota is so small.

It will be kind of a waste going out for such small fish on a short season.

It will be more like a boating day instead of fishing.
