Tuna Charter?
Okay, I'm going crazy with all this tuna talk. I was able to hold it together until Pilar's Mate put up those pictures. The glaze came over my eyes and there was no longer any hope for me.
Who runs a good charter for tuna? I've heard good things about the Irish out of Newport, but I also hear that Depoe is closer to the fish. (Quicker run = more time fishing)
Anybody been out with a charter lately and had a good (or bad) time?
Thanks.
Skein

Re: Tuna Charter?
Skein,
Just talked with a buddy who went out of Depoe Bay Sunday -- they caught five for 12 people -- they trolled 60+ water. From the earlier reports from all of us, you probably saw we did better in cooler water the day before.
If you can get on the Irish, go for it, but he's pretty much booked usually. I would still check it out, though.
Good luck....I've got the fever bad!

Re: Tuna Charter?
Skein- Today I called Chris that books the Irish and he said full until the 22 of Sept Darn others have tuna fever too. I called tradewinds out of Depoe Bay. It sounds like they go dailey got one going out Thurs. I passed on and a trip Fri I booked might be a $165 mistake but hey fishing is never a guarntee like the ladies who know being out is a privilege and getting a fish is a bonus.
Talking to the person who answers the phone she has no Idea what they use for tackle or if they are gonna throw bait if no fish bite. I am calling again to clarify.
Oh yeah on Garibladi Charters, I was in Garibaldi and left my name for a tuna trip call back as they cancelled on me. I called agin lately and they did not answer bussiness must be good for them.

Re: Tuna Charter?
UG,
Thanks for the offer! I'd jump at the chance to do that, but don't want to put you on the spot. I figure you must have gotten tired of my whimpering and figured the only way to shut me up was get me on the business end of a torpedo.
I'm strictly a weekend warrior since my employer thinks I should show up for work during the week - even during steelhead, salmon, tuna, duck, deer, and elk season. That said, I'm game any Saturday or Sunday, and O arkthirty is not a problem.
I've got a couple of good chinook rods, with Penn 209's and 30# on them. I don't know whether that will handle bullets or not, or even if you would want me to bring them. Maybe we just need to talk first.
Again, thanks for the offer, and I'd really enjoy fishing with you.
Uh.... how big did you say your boat was?

Re: Tuna Charter?
I was lucky enough to go out on Monday with Garibaldi Charters. Had a good time, but the fish weren't cooperating too much. Everyone on the boat brought home a fish, minus one. We saw a lot of tuna jumping around us, but getting them on the hook seemed to require a bit of magic. They used hand lines, and I never saw any bait hit the water. I'm new to the salt, so I'm probably not too much help.
The weather was super fine though, sunshine and smooth smooth ocean. Some of the best naps I can recall were on the deck of that boat!

Re: Tuna Charter?
Does anyone know the "Amigo" Tradewinds DB?
Ok I am calling more charters. I called Charlton they were out did not answer. Tiki only does Salmon. In Ilwaco Sea Breeze Charters only doing Salmon will do a Tuna trip later in Sept.
So just called Irish again full. The charter people I have called have no idea no clue where the Tuna are what the skippers will be using saying that they go on what the commercial guys do. Blind leading the blind it sounds like. They are ignoring what the Salty Dogs do here at ifish. They are not into getting info from the internet. Frustated with charters makes me want to save for a big boat to go to tunatown.

Re: Tuna Charter?
Hey Skein, when the kind lady on the phone from a charter office in Oregon isn't sure if they'll be "throwing bait," then she really doesn't have a clue as to what really happens on the boats she books.
Since the Irish seems to be booked up, the other really good bet is Rich Oba down in Winchester Bay (Pacific Pioneer Charters, link on this website). Rather than fish with handlines as most of the charters in Oregon do, Rich does use rods and he really knows about SPORT fishing.
When the tuna are breaking but not biting heavy handline gear, there are other tactics that can be used that will get bit (it's called lighter gear). A charter boat using only handlines is locked into that method.
Other option is to drive up to Westprot, where they do indeed have live bait and know how to fish light gear.
Good Luck.....

Re: Tuna Charter?
Marc Mc what charter did you call ? Sounded just like the Tradewinds I called I think they play it off so they wont be held accountable for lack of fish. Most charters seem to have that game they play. I think they play the odds you go anyway by saying they don't know. In another thread I asked about the live bait and got a good post from Pilars Mate about using chopped herring and candlefish or what the tuna have in them. Hence the term chumming or feeding the fish 'live bait" ha ha .

Re: Tuna Charter?
Skein - The SST maps are showing real close water up here at the CR. Coho Charters out of Ilwaco does Tuna. I have no idea if they are booked up.
I don't know how they do for tuna, but have been fishing around their Salmon Charters all season and they do real well. I wouldn't hesitate to book a tuna with them.
Sea condition forecast sucks for the weekend, but they're starting to back off. I still have hope - we've got a party going this Sat.
(Sorry Jen - but Gene is not doing Tuna yet on Lady Dee so I don't feel bad about Tackle TIme at all. Next year may be different - he's getting Lady Dee dialed in and lookin good).

Re: Tuna Charter?
Skein..The charter boats in Oregon do not have the capacity to carry live anchovies so hence none of the boats use the stuff..Hand line or rod and reel is up to you although I much prefer the fishin pole....
The Irish is always booked because he seems to always get into the albies..Sometimes you might take a longer boat ride but chances of you getting something is pretty good on the Irish...
Use the boat rods as they troll for em..Using 60 to 80 lb trolling rigs..Your salmon gear would not be quite up to the task..
Go one time and watch and see what the deal is..Once you catch one you'll be hooked gaffed and sacked up yourself....Good luck....

Re: Tuna Charter?
will_e_fish,
Thanks for sharing all your info - I feel for you trying to line something up. Give us a report when it all comes together and you get out. In the meantime, start looking for that boat. Tell your wife the payments only amount to about one charter per month. Just don't mention gas, gps, depthfinder, rods, reels, lures.... you know.
Fastwater,
Thanks for the info on Charlton Charters. I was just hoping for something a little closer to home.
I did a charter with Cap'n and Little Mark Charlton last year for sturgeon. We had a family reunion at Seaside and there were enough of us to charter the whole boat. What a blast! These two are Good Guys! We had folks from back east who had never handled a level-wind in their lives, and who had never caught anything bigger than a smallmouth. Ya shudda seen 'em when that oversize (about 7+ feet) jumped out of the water just off the stern.
We came home with just enough keepers to have a fish fry and let everyone have a taste. Big hit! Great day! And those guys worked really hard to keep us on fish and see that everyone on board got to do battle.
(The preceeding was paid for by..... no, just kidding)
