Good father's day fishing spots for this weekend?
Hi Everyone,
I have read the boards here for quite a while and occasionally have posted something. However, even though I have been around for a while I feel obligated to provide a story before asking for advice.
Story first.
Many years ago when I lived in North Carolina (long before I had kids) my friend and I would go fishing every weekend in the little boat that I had built. We would meet at one of the small lakes we fished at first light and not get home till well after dark. Our wives begrudgingly allowed us this luxury. Well one fall we were fishing and had the best day of our lives. Between the two of us we landed 11 bass over 5lbs with the biggest being 7lb 11oz. This was a Saturday. Well my friend and I started talking about how we could not possibly let fishing like this go to waste. So we told our wives we were going out again the next day. This did not go over well (glares, cold shoulders, listing of personal defects, etc). We had to spend every bit of goodwill we had built up - we made promises to go garden shows and in general agreed to unspeakable things, but we were driven by thoughts of another amazing day. Well, the next day we fished from dawn till dusk and only caught a couple of dinks. Our wives of course were incredibly pleased with our lack of success. I think it took a good five years before that weekend stopped being used as a pry bar to get me to do things Oh well, such is fishing.
Now to asking for advice. This Sunday is father's day and I want to go fishing with my 4 year old son and 8 year old daughter. Both kids like to fish and we often go to Commonwealth pond or Bethany pond for trout in the spring and carp later in the year. Most of the carp we catch are small. I would like to find a safe spot to take the kids on Sunday where they have a good chance of catching a big carp. I have read that there are a lot of carp on Sauvie's island, in the Columbia and in the Willamette. However, I am not sure precisely where to go, especially where to go right now. If the carp fishing is not good right now I would welcome any good pan fishing advice. I live in the Cedar Mill area of Portland and would prefer not to drive too far since that takes some of the fun out of it for the kids.
Thanks for listening,

Thanks for the story. Sorry about the high price for a couple of dinks.

Re: Good father's day fishing spots for this weekend?
Your are in luck, I walk the Tualatin river daily, seen huge carp below the
new walking bridge between Durham Park and Tualatin park. Fish on the
Durham side downriver, cast out to snag (dead limb sticking up).
Water murky today so you probably won't see the fish from bridge.
The reason they are there is the outlet pipe from sewage treatment
plant goes out just under the bridge. Your closest parking is Durham
park, just off Rivendale and Arkenstone (spelling might be slightly off).
Good luck if you go let me know how you did.

Thanks for the tip! I looked at the satellite view on google maps and I was wondering if the banks in that area are shallow sloped or steep? I worry about this with my 4 year old Also I am a little concerned about taking the little one near the sewage outlet. In your opinion does it smell or is the sewage treatment pretty righteous.
Thanks!

Re: Good father's day fishing spots for this weekend?
There are carp in the slog next to cedar oak boat launch in the willy at west linn. They stage in there by july I would assume they would be there now you can access it quit nicely on a 1/2 mile trail from mary s young park that takes you to a bridge and gets you on the island perfect for kids and the dog . You can also acess some bank from the trail at the boat launch leading away from the bathroom 100 yards. In the heat of summer we hook monsters on demand with our ultralights using asian fishing tacktics my brother learned while sport fishing with the locals in the philopeans carp are the bass of asia apparently.

John:
Steep bank going down but flattens out under bridge. I would by all
means have the 4 yr old wear life jacket. If you want a real safe
place go to Cook Park which is just behind Tigard High School. They
have a boat ramp and dock for fishing. Caught carp, pikeminnow, suckers
and small mouth there. Great for kids, lots of ducks and geese if they
get bored fishing. This weekend they have the balloon festival, so I
probably would stay away until next weekend.

Re: Good father's day fishing spots for this weekend? (fishing report)
Thanks to everyone for the advice. I ended up going down to Mary S Young park and fishing in the Willamette for the wily bugle mouthed bass I ended just taking my 8 year old daughter since my 4 year old son ended up having a 102 fever. We fished for about 1.5 hours and my daughter caught the 3 fish in the pictures (small one is a sucker). We only weighed the third fish and it was 4lb 12oz. She reeled them all in on 6lb test and did a great job of learning how to fight a big fish on light line. The carp both made some nice runs and she was good and patient in letting them go. She learned how to pump the fish in and whipped them pretty darn good. I especially love the fact that she was happy to put her thumb in the carps mouth!
