Great idea, UglyGreen, thanks for picking this up and running with it.
In diving (as well as flying) we "filed" a plan. The old adage was, "Plan your dive and dive your plan." Someone on shore should know the following:
When you're leaving
Where you're leaving from
Where you're headed
How many people on board
How long you anticipate being out
When you leave, a call to them on a cell phone or radio can be a good idea too. How many of us manage to pull away when we plan to? More likely we are running late, so a call can cement (is that a nautical term?) when you actually left and who's on board.
My 2 cents (as if I'd really spent much time on the big tub).
