Tuna Fotos - 8/24
Unfortunately not too many shots taken... I was busy driving, John busy fishing... camera buried under our sleeping crew (Xanah)
Ugly Green... great shot of you and crew in the fog. Had to take it through the side window of "Pilar", but I think it turned out okay... will send you full size if you like.

Re: Tuna Fotos - 8/24
Hey, the picture of the boat in the mist and fog is really, really good.............nice fish also, but the boat picture brings up all kinds of mental images of those early morning outings when the excitement is at its peak and the coffee and air in the face are at maximum exposure. If that was my boat I would make a poster. Great shot.

Yes, pure adrenaline, following the plastic jesus through the fog. This is the defining moment for the offshore big game angler. Cowboy up and head out to the fishing grounds.
Well put Marty and this pic is now wallpaper on my PC.

Re: Tuna Fotos - 8/24
WOW! that is a great picture... makes the ugly green boat look not so ugly... yes please email me the full size / full resolution shot... was it digital?? if not I would pay for a 11X14 enlargment off the negative...
thanks.. email: ifish2002@hotmail.com
I also thout the 5 boat V formation was neat on the way out of Depoe Bay... The fog and slick swells reminded me a lot of times past when I lived in Sitka, Alaska... I agree with Marty, very cool indeed!

Ugly,
When were you in Sitka? I worked for the AMHS and got to Stargaven Bay two or three times a year for maintenance on the docks.
Were you there when the Mat (it might have been the Mal) hit the dock and busted the north king piling?

Re: Tuna Fotos - 8/24
I lived in Sitka in 1989-1990, worked for the Forest Service in fisheries enhancement. Lived in the FS barraks halfway between downtown and the ferry dock...
Actually spent most of my time in the field, on the back side of Baranoff Island, SE Chichagoff Island, and the West side of Admarlity Island...
Spent several weeks at both Kook lake and Redoubt lake doing Sockeye studies as well... didnt spend much time around the town docks or marina area, plus most of the commercial fisherman hated us Forest Service / Government pukes... Tight lines...

Re: Tuna Fotos - 8/24
Uglygreen,
You've got mail!
I took another look at that photo and marveled at how glassy that water was.
Tag-a-long, the Uglygreen may look small, but she is mighty (and fishy, I might add). What a beautiful sight to see her skimming across the water like that. I wished I could have caught her coming off the backside of a swell (there really were a few, despite the looks in this pic). A sight to behold!

Re: Tuna Fotos - 8/24
Hey Pilar, Had great weekend, halibut, cod and bonus chinook on a halibut rig letting down. Good to hear about the tuna trip. Bill has been trying to register but cant seem to get it done on his Macintosh something about cookies. Any ideas? I tried to contact Ifish by email but netscape couldnt find the default email address provided on the "contact us" page. Do you have another email address to try. Oh I hate to mention this but Friday morning lost the second 80lb plus butt due to trying to net before realizing to big for net and hook getting caught in the net fish arching its back pulling hook loose and swimming away. I wont mention anymore stupidity in future messages. And just for the heck of it we run about 25 feet of cord to diver and about 15-20 feet of leader to jig and seems to work real well.

Re: Tuna Fotos - 8/24
Thanks for the strokes. I guess I got lucky. Shooting the moving boat, from a moving boat. The ocean was glassy, but not flat as flat as it appears and we were bouncing a bit more than usual because of the load. Side window had mist on it. It was the only shot I attempted. Glad it turned out.
And yes... the tuna were on the other side of the fog
No known cure for tuna fever, except perhaps long days of driving, fishing, cleaning fish, and more driving, sleepless nights due to hours upon hours of processing fish... NOT! John and I finished late last night (except for one load for the canner and one for the smoker) and I'm already trying to figure out when we'll be able to go again!

Cool picture! Kind of makes me think of "The Old Man and The Sea". I can just picture his lonely quest out on the deep blue.

Re: Tuna Fotos - 8/24
If stuff like my mates photo does not stir your blood ... I know not what to say.
BTW the plastic jesus on the 'Pilar' is a Lowrance 350A. It's a little worn but I would not dream of cruising without it. Hence the nickname, it sits on the dash and keeps us on the straight and narrow.
There are times when I try to explain to those that do not venture on the sea, why I go there. Not too much later I give up and go back to dreaming about it. You really have to go there to feel it and believe it.
This photo belongs on the front page of the saltydogs board. The next time I have to explain about the salt in my veins, I will just hand over a copy of this photo of my friends doing the thing they love ......
Peace .. Love .. Fishing

Re: Tuna Fotos - 8/24
What an awesome picture that is . I love the name tunatown is just through the fog. Yep, I thought of the old man and the sea too. Great movie by the way.
We had a great time going after hali's, Lings, on Friday and Tuna on Saturday.
Pilar we would like to join that tuna pyramid of boats some time. Your tuna looked awesome.
We were on the Irish and did not get into to them until late in the day. We got 13 tuna for 6 people. But still had a great time. My pole hit 1st. Wow what a fun fish.

Re: Tuna Fotos - 8/24
Finally got some pix uploaded from my 8/21 trip with Wak'm. I can't believe he was able to get the motion shot so well because we were really bouncing. Not quite the same as Uglygreen's but I still like them. Thanks Wak.

Re: Tuna Fotos - 8/24
UglyG's picture is one of the most awsome pictures ever on ifish !!
That could or should win an award. It tells a story worth more than a thousand words. Inspiring and motivational, makes me think it should have a title. "Tunaman of the Big Blue" or "Tunatown is just through the fog".
Nothing ugly about that image.
Just gotta ask how big is that boat?
Thanks for the sharing that great picture!

Re: Tuna Fotos - 8/24
Geezus (plastic or otherwise) that picture is the REAL STUFF! Hunting tuna has to be something that takes you to a whole 'nother level. I figure there must have been a tuna in the back of the transporter when they beamed you aboard, and some of the blood musta got mixed up with yours. I get pumped just by reading this stuff.
Nice picture, Pilar's Mate. You've got the touch.
What's the antidote for TF (Tuna Fever)? Oh man, oh man.....
