Lost Pet .. Bill, please come home
Yeah, alrighty then. Another nice calm day on the big blue lake with ifish friends.
Tuna can be had 35 miles west of Depoe Bay. 58 degree water too cold you say? What about 57 degree water? Fish are jumping but not biting? Well about 60 or so tuna for five boats did not think so ... burp
The '61 degree' waypoint was a good thing once again. Don't just drive west looking for hot water. Stop, smell the bait fish and chase the tuna birds and albatross on the way. All of the fish I saw at the carking station were a nice grade, 15 to 25lbs and a few to 30+.
5 boats to start out with and at times 6 or 7 Ifish boats were working the scattered jumpers and having moderate success. Uglygreen, Corrirod, SeaSquid, Puffin, Julie Rose III, Gregotis98, Pilar and ... and ...dang I'm tired, someone else but brain not working.
Help me out guys.
Pilar boated 11 and farmed 4 for the day. But the best part is all about 'Bill'.
At one point I heard a terrible snapping sound and turned to watch my mates favorite yellow rod sailing through the air and splash into the propwash. How could this happen? Not sure but that rig has killed many tuna with screaming drag and no worries.
I watched it get jerked through the water with tremendous force, once, twice and then concluded that I would see it never again. The 'Fishon' brand rod holder or what remained of it was still in the bracket and the rest over the side.
Drag too tight? Huge fish?
So if you see my pet fish 'Bill' and he's still dragging my mates yellow ugly stick/ senator 4/0 rod- reel, send him home.
We miss you Bill, please come home
Pretty funny huh, uglygreen. Yeah well it happened to him to even as he was listening to me on the VHF and laughing at me.
So we have something about 35 miles out there, large and mysterious that likes Zukers green and chart tuna feathers fished way back (200yds) that rips rods, holders and all off of boats.
 Wonder what that could be?
Bill, please come home .....

Re: Lost Pet .. Bill, please come home
My deepest condolences to "Pilar's Mate" in this time of her most grievous of losses. :depressed: Friends that you can rely on like that are hard to come by. Even worse that is that it is the result of your other friend, "Tempress, betraying your trust.
Was glad to hear that you all got into the tuna, even in the cold water.
It was killing me watching you all head past me on your way out yesterday in the fog. I wasn't feeling much better about it at noon either when all I had to show for my troubles was one hake that sucked down a my halibut herring. Mind you it was the granddaddy of all hake, but a hake is just a hake. I wasn't even sure that I had anything still on until he was on the surface. :depressed:
I switched back over to trolling for chinook about 11:00 AM, but was highly doubtful that I was going to have any luck with water temps hoving between 47F and 48F. At a quarter after 1, I was alternating between dozing off at the rudder, and muttering to myself about how foolish I was to think I was going to hook up on anything, when WHAMMO, fish on!
Of course I was more than happy to wake up and deal with the situation. As the fish dove, I thought chinook, as it came to the surface and ripped off 30 yds of line I was sure it was a fat coho. After about 5 minutes, I finally got it close enough to the boat to see that it was a nice "nook". Of course then he started playing peek a boo, and it took another 10 minutes before he was finally in the net. Always a challenge when playing this game solo.
It was a nice 18 lb chinook fully mature buck. He hit an unlabeled herring (sorry I catch my own) with a Scotty head clip about 6 ft behind a Delta diver. He was shallow at 20 ft. about 5.5 miles SW of the Dopey bell.
No pictures yet, the wife walked off with the digital camera yesterday, so I have to do it the old fashioned way.

Re: Lost Pet .. Bill, please come home
Tuna in the canner, tuna being sealed, tuna everywhere -- no lost pets though, for the first time yesterday I had safety lines on my rods in the holders.
thanks again for running Saturday guys...
I've got 5-6 people who want to run this weekend -- I'm probably good for Saturday and Sunday if anybody is thinking about it -- ocean permitting of course...possibly Garibaldi, more likely Depoe Bay.
have a great week --

Re: Lost Pet .. Bill, please come home
Pilar.............your message on cold water tuna was right on. We went and limited butts Friday and looking at sst pics the warmest water was around Nelson island area. 10 miles from the ranch was worth the run and we headed North. We found water that was only 55.2, BUT tide rips, current lines, small birds everywhere, albatross, and of course the clincher was boils and jumping tuna. We cut our first one open and found it loaded with krill and 2 inch long sauries. We had some time restraints and didn't start til almost 1:00 but had 8 on and landed 4 nice green water bullets. We did discover that our "normal" zukers, sevenstrands and tuna clones were not getting hit. We went over to the small cedar plugs and fishtraps and we were getting hit on a regular basis. Mark Mc. even got one throwing a trap as we trolled by a couple of boilers. My point being, cold water fish don't bite as aggressively and you will do better by 'matching the hatch' or putting something smaller, even if it means small crocidiles or castmaster, anything that resembles what they are actually eating. This kind of fishing can even be more enjoyable because you don't have to always read the water, you can just see the fish jumping and boiling. But have patience, which is sometimes hard when there are fish jumping all around but aren't hitting your gear.
Anyway, enough said...........and concrats for the ifishers who are eating sushi tonight and good luck for the Sunday hunters. And HOPEFULLY this kind of water will last awhile.

Re: Lost Pet .. Bill, please come home
That was a great time guys!
We only nailed 5 but all were good sized with the biggest about 27lbs. Hopefully with the advice from Pilar after the trip we will make a better run of it next time around.
I must say though, we were joking around about the bannana on my boat, well believe it or not, last night when I was cleaning out the cabin of the boat I FOUND AN F#*!@ING BANNANA !!!!!!
Apparently one of the guys I brought on board had them! After I made the joke on the radio he turned to me and laughingly said he had just ate one but I thought he was joking!
Aaaaaaaaaaaauuuuuuuuuuuggggggggghhhh!

Of course now I can use that as an excuse to go again!!
Thanks to Gregotis for the 2 charity tuna and thanks to Pilar for the lucky tuna lure and wealth of knowledge.
It was a blast both days to be out with all the Ifishers. Friday we fished for hali's with no luck till about 11am, went for chinook and was able to hookup with 5 and land 2, covering both ends of the spectrum because one was 20 1/4" (would've let him go but he caught one hook to the gill) and the other dead even 40 lbs.!! We did go back for Hali's and managed to lose an approximate 80+lber at the boat. I failed to show my running mate how to use the harpoon and so he proceed to miss the halibut and send the poon to the bottom of the ocean. :depressed: In the heat of the battle we tried to both hoist the hali into the boat but his first thrash snapped the 130# leader and he went back to the deep.
Oh well, still a ton of fun that included a huge humpback whaile that swam around our boat less than 30 ft. away checking us out and a long dolphin run of about 20 minutes of them riding our bow wave! (pics to come if they turn out)
Wife thought she was going to have the baby last night so this could be my last overnight trip. I told her she should just come with me... but after regaining consciousness from her wacking me with a blunt object I realized that probably wasn't a good idea.

Re: Lost Pet .. Bill, please come home
It was great heading out with the 4 other boats yesterday. At one point, I noticed that we were in a V formation with "Pilar" at the apex. A few miles out some "tuna" birds joined the formation and flew with us for quite some time. I took that as a good sign. We also saw a large group of albatross sitting on the water. I new then it was going to be a special day.
Fishing was at a much more leisurely pace than on 7/7. What a great day on the ocean!
I'm still grieving over my "yellow po". John says we'll get me a new one, but somehow, I'm not sure it will ever be the same. I could get over that much easier if "Bill" would come home. If you see him, tell him all is forgiven, we just want him home.
I'm still in love with Al Bacore. I think John may be sorry some day that he introduced us. Al does have this annoying habit, however, of throwing ice cubes and bloody water around when you're busy with the bucket... er... taking care of business.
Great fishing with you guys! Hope we can do it again sometime... like... oh... maybe REEL soon!

J,
Aren't you glad you weren't holding on to "Bill" when it went over the side?

Glad to hear my Ugly Stick with a Penn 345GTI lost on July 24,2002, in the same vicinity will not be lonely anymore! Oh well I don't feel so stupid anymore! :depressed: I guess it could happen to anyone. Congradulations on your long fins.

Re: Lost Pet .. Bill, please come home
Awsome trip guys! This whole trip was full of firsts for me. Depoe Bay, tuna, and fishing with ifish members, success on all counts.
Having never been out of Depoe Bay I had my reserves, but going with people that know made it much easier. The fog was THICK. I had planed to take some waypoints on the way out put couldn't see more than 100ft and had no idea where the bouys were and was losing site of my running mates fast. Before I knew it they were gone, so I just headed for Pilars 61 deg #'s.
About five miles from his spot I started to see these amazing fish boil and roll. I didn't know what to think and called Corrirod to tell him the good news. We started trolling and almost instantly had my first ever warm water fish on. The sound of that reel was stunning, but I couldn't stop and listen, I had to see what was making that beautiful music. What a stunning fish, silver, black, electric blue, and eyes about the size of a half dollar. Things went a little slow for a while and Pilar's Mate said throw some bait at the rollers when you pass them. Sure enough right after that we saw some fish on our right and gave them a herring snack, with the sound of screaming reels soon to follow, double! At one point we had a triple with only the two of us on board. We ended up with fifteen longfins on three rods for the day.
As far as fishing with ifish guys goes, this bunch was a good bunch. No surfing waves or swimming to Hawaii, just fishing. We all seemed to be just regular Joe's, no fancy stuff needed just guys that like to fish.
Let's do it again!

Keta, we're sure glad neither of us had hold of that po' when it went a-sailin'. What a ride that would have been!
Next time we go, I think we'll rig some safety straps and put some rings on the reels so's we can hook them together if need be. Bill's not running away from home again!

Re: Lost Pet .. Bill, please come home
Wow, what a day...
Tally for the ugly green boat... 24 fish (Tuna) and 1 Blue Shark and 1 Pacific Hake... one lost rod...
By the way sturgn, Pilar just had his drag too tight or had his line wrapped around the tip of his pole, IT WAS US THAT HOOKED THE FREAKIN MARLIN... (ha-ha) and apparently Scotty Brand plastic rod holders have the same problems as Fishon ones, SNAP...
And yes... it was true that approximatly 5 minutes after Pilar reported rod lost, and about 30 seconds after we got done sinckering and laughing about it on my boat that there was a mighty snap, and a Shakespere Tidewater rod with a Penn 6/0 senator went sailing about 20 feet in the air and landed at least 40 feet behind the boat. Strange thing was we had already started to slow down as one of the other rods had gone off about 5 seconds before. I would guess that we were only at acout 3-4 mph when the rod went airborn. Thus the ONLY conclusion is that we HOOKED A FREAKIN MARLIN!!!
best trip of the year as far as I am concerned, really enjoyed all the company on the big blue lake... our biggest Tuna of the year at 33 lbs on corrirods scale. Top producer for this trip was by far the purple/black Poe's Cedar Plug... which accounted for nearly half the fish. The lost rod was on a Mexican Flag feather jig... yet more evidence that WE HOOKED A FREAKIN MARLIN... oops gotta stop that.
(in reality we had gotton preatty lazy about resetting drags after fish, and that rod had just been put back out, and the fish were runnen a bit bigger today. another lesson learned to the tune of about $200.00)

Re: Lost Pet .. Bill, please come home
I have to concurr with my fellow fisherpersons that I had an absolute blast on Sat. fishing out of Gregotis's boat for the albies. First time for me for Oregon tuna and what a nice way to get broke in. It was great to finally get out there and get into some quality fish and an added bonus to meet and fish with some quality/knowledgeable folks. Had a great time of the carking as well (Pilar, did'nt mean to mislead you on the ifish handle, thought it was just my e-mail address but I guess it's my ifish name as well, for better or worse). Anyway thanks again to Pilar, corrirod, Seasquid, Uglygreen and the others for the hospitality and comraderie, especially nice in pea soup fog, (is that you off my port side?). Damn I love to hear those reels scream, and I did'nt even have to board a plane. What a treat right here in our own backyard. Next time (hopefully soon), I'll bring the wasabi, soy, and pickled ginger. Fresh sashimi for the carking, I can't wait.

Oh yeah, and we're looking forward to seeing Tunaboy on the board (his buddy already dubbed him that) These guys from eastern Oregon went out for 'buts on Saturday. At the cleaning station we all got to chatting. They thought they were finished cleaning fish until Pilar thrust an albacore at them.
They're addicted already, they just don't realize it.
Tunaboy, where are you? Forget the Pendleton Roundup and join us for the Tuna Rodeo.

John my friend remain calm, slowy seat yourself and take deep slow breaths. Try to maintain yourself in the present moment - deep breaths - calm, deep breaths. There is that better? I didn't think so but what the hell it was worth a try. You got it bad and that's good! Look out BILL!
