Default Sluggos

I opened up an old tackle box for the first time in about 12 years and found a bunch of sluggos. I hadn't thought of them in years. I used to do pretty well on them as I recall. Carolina rigged or weightless. Does anybody remember these or even still use them?

No one here knows what a sluggo is? I know it's an old bait but it was thee bait for a while back in the 80's. Thick plastic. 5" long. Flat on the bottom. Very erratic motion, darting from side to side on the jerk and the fall. Has a groove on the top for the hook point to sit in. Ex-Bassguide, I know you must have used these. What did you think of them? BIll

I was BORN in the 80's and i know sluggos. They are great and hard to find. I use to jerk'em sub surface for smallies on the umpqua and for largemouth in fernridge. Man i wish i could find a source for those. I still have maybe 5 baby sluggos in rainbow trout, 4 in brown trout, And one in pepto pink. I thought I was the only person in the world that liked those. That makes 2 of us.

I have 12. No, you can't have them. Well, maybe if the price was right. I am going to start using them again and if they work as good as I remember, I am going to start looking for them. If I find some I'll let you know. Bill

You must be from around the Eugene area judging by your posts about Fern Ridge and Dorena. Good luck to you where ever you end up. Let me know how you do with the sluggos and I'll do the same. Time to hit the hay. Bill

Yep, I remember them and I used them for deadsticking on grass lines mainly. You can pretty much fish them the same way as a senko too. Throw'em in a pile and wait. I have some lead spike type worm weights that I would stick in the middle of them to adjust the bouyancy or sink rate. We did best with white and pearl or salt and pepper colors. I bought something similar a few years back from Bass Pro Shop. The BPS ones are way cheaper , maybe half the price as I remember.

Sluggo's, Heck yes!!!Beleive it or not, I like to throw the bubblegum ones. For whatever reason, they seem to work really well. I had an outlet for some really good ones off Ebay, but the guy sold his molds and went out of business. He had a color that produced well, it was a 6" pearl white belly and a green black flake back! I only have about ten of those left and then no more! Lately I have been rigging them with the new screw lock belly weighted #6 swimbait hooks!

I don't know the complete story/history of the sluggo. All I know is they were all over the place in the 1980s when I was growing up.

Only from this thread did I realize that they are no longer in production. I do remember seeing a bunch of them in the clearance bin in a tackle store many years ago.

What happened to the sluggo? Manufacturer went out of business? The senko or other plastic out performed the sluggo and/or priced them out of the market?

Are you talking about Lunker City™ Slug-Go® ?

If so they still sell them at Bass Pro.

Was there another company that made them?

I have some of the Slug-Go 3in ones that I try from time to time.

Dave, I have never heard of Lunker City Slug-Go but very likely the same thing. If they look like what I described in my second post, that's them. They are heavy enough that you don't need a weight if you are fishing them in shallow grass or pads or over submerged coontail moss. When you twitch them they tend to glide upward. You can work them through the thickest stuff.
They have a darting motion to them when twitched and fall very slowly. You can get some good action at greater depths by Carolina rigging or shot weighting them.

lunker city was and has been the only maker of the slug-o. the zoom flukes work just as well if not better and are much esier to find. i rig mine with a 1/16-1/8 weight pegged to the nose and a 3/0 mustad ultra point offset worm hook. with practice you can make them turn 180 and go away from you. great for dock and pad fishing.

Well then I'm not sure why people are having a hard time finding them. I see them all over the place. Didn't know there was a shortage.

They may be coming back. I looked around local maybe 2 years ago or so with no luck. checked a couple mags and nothing showed at those times. It may be no one was advertising them for a while.

You can see them at BassHound link above. Not much to look at but they are made different than Senkos and the like. They are a soft plastic jerk bait with great action because of one side being flat. The look like an injured minnow when worked correctly.

Bass Pro Shops even has a whole video devoted to how to fish this lure. Bill

I was reminded of Sluggos when fishing in Texarkana with some guys. I then realized that my late grandfather left me a plastic baggie with some in it in his tackle box that I inherited back in 87. I haven't used them, but the Texarkana guys have not heard of Senkos so I think that niche is still controlled there by Sluggos. As long as it ends in o's it's ok with me.

Sluggos were one of our regular big fish producers when fishing the Potomac in the 90's. Used no weight and fished them just under the surface with a jerk and pause retrieve. Great lure over weed beds. Still have them and intend to give them a try here just as soon the Summer Chinook season ends.

I'm looking at a back issue of Field and Stream (from last year), which had the author's top 50 lures of all time.

He ranks the sluggo at #6. For comparison, he ranks the curl tail grub at #1 and the senko at #30.

here's his top 10--keep in mind, that the author's ranking was not "top 50 bass lures of all time" but rather "top 50 lures of all time", and so there are some lures in the list that are for trout/pike/walleye, etc. too

1. Curly tail grub
2. Daredevle spoon
3. Rapala
4. Mepps Aglia
5. Johnson Silver Minnow
6. Sluggo
7. Zara Spook
8. Berkley Power Worm
9. Original Gitzit (tube soft plastic)
10. Flatfish
